Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Balmaa maane naa

Posted on: December 4, 2010

“Opera House” (1961) was a B grade movie starring Ajit, B Saroja Devi, K N Singh, Maruti, Niranjan Sharma,Baalam etc. Many of the so called B grade movies of those days are indistinguishable from A grade stuff, except for low budget. And as far as the music of these movies were concerned. The music was invariably A grade.

Here is a dance song from this movie. It is sung by Lata and picturised on B Saroja Devi. I hope I have identified the actress correctly. I am of course open to correction.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and music is composed by Chitragupta.

Here is this delightful song from “Opera House” (1961).

Song-Balmaa maane naa (Opera House) (1961) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

balmaa maane naa
bairi chup na rahe
laagi man ki kahe
haay
paa ke akeli
mori bainyaan dhare
balmaa maane naa
bairi chup na rahe
laagi man ki kahe
hay
paa ke akeli
mori bainyaan dhare
balmaa maane naa

jab jab paltoon gaagar bhar ke
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
jab jab paltoon gaagar bhar ke
lat rah jaaye mukh pe bikhar ke
jab jab paltoon gaagar bhar ke
lat rah jaaye mukh pe bikhar ke
baat kahe aisi
dil waalaa
baat kahe aisi
dil waalaa
tadpe aur tadpaaye mohe
balamaa maane na
bairi chup na rahe
laagi man ki kahe
hay
paa ke akeli
mori bainyaan dhare
balmaa maane naa

ghoonghat daaroon nain churaaun
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
ghoonghat daaroon nain churaaun
ghabraahat mein raah na paaun
ghoonghat daaroon nain churaaun
ghabraahat mein raah na paaun
wo baankaa rasiyaa matwaalaa
wo baankaa rasiyaa matwaalaa
sune na mori apni hi kahe
balmaa maane na
bairi chup na rahe
laagi man ki kahe
hay
paa ke akeli
mori bainyaan dhare
balmaa maane naa

Waah waah, so I too can identify old actresses correctly. Well, sometimes, at least.

Wow, I just love this song!
Am hearing it after ages – and it sounds just as lovely as when i used to hear it years ago.

Chitragupta was a hugely under-estimated MD. Never quite got enough credit for his work.

Saroja Devi was a trained dancer with very captivating looks. Though she did act in very few Hindi films but left her mark in I those films. This beautiful classical song by Lataji is a timeless song and still appears so fresh even after more than half a century
