Aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai

Posted on: January 12, 2011

During the golden era of Hindi movie music (circa 1950-1980), things were quite simple and rudimentary in most fields. Hindi movie songs tended to become popular only if the movie did better, and the movies did better only if they followed certain set formulaes. Movies that tended to deviate from the standard formulae tended to fail and as a result, the songs of such movies too would suffer.

“Nayi Umar Ki Nayi Fasal” (1965) was an off beat movie and it failed at the box office. AS a result, the songs of this movie also failed to get popular with the public. In fact, most people may not have heard of most of the songs of this movie.

For instance, I was just not aware of this song from “Nayi Umar Ki Nayi Fasal” (1967). I have become aware of this song only because of a farmaish from Lalitha who has obviously heard this song before.

Here is this lovely radio song, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. The song is picturised on Tanuja and Rajeev.

Neeraj (who was making his debut as a lyricist in this movie) is the lyricist. Roshan is thew music director.

This song has two versions, in fact. apart from the duet version, this song is also sung solo by Rafi.

Here is this forgotten gem from a forgotten movie.

Lyrics

Solo version
———————————–
aaj ki raat
badi shokh
badi natkhat hai ae ae
aaj to tere binaa
neend nahin aayegi
ab to tere hi yahaan aane kaa ye mausam hai
ab tabeeyat na khayaalon se bahal paayegi

dekh wo chhat pe utar aayi hai saawan ki ghata
de rahi dwaar pe aawaaz khadi purwaayi
bijli reh reh ke pahaadon pe chamak uthhti hai
soonee aankhon mein koi khwaab le jyun angdaayi
kaise samjhaaun
kaise samjhaaun ke is waqt ka matlab kya hai ae
dil ki hai baat
ho dil ki hai baat
na honthon se kahi jaayegi
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hm hm
aaj ki raat

ye bhatakte huye jugnu
ye diye aawara
bheegte ped pe bujh bujh ke chamak uthhte hai
tere aanchal mein tanke salme sitaare jaise
mujhe milne ko bina baat damak uthhte hain
saara aalam
saara aalam hai giraftaar tere husn mein jab
mujhse hi kaise
haaye
mujhse hi kaise
ye barsaat sahi jaayegi
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hm hm
aaj ki raat

raatraani ki ye bheeni si nasheeli khushboo
aa rahi hai ke jo chhan chhan ke ghhani daalon se
aisa lagta hai kisi dhheeth jhakore se lipat
khel aayi hai tere uljhe huye baalon se
aur bezaar
aur bezaar na kar
mere tadapte dil ko o
aisi rangeen
ho o
aisi rangeen ghazal raat na phir gaayegi
aaj to tere bina neend nahin aayegi
aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai

Duet version
————————————
aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi
ab to tere hi yahaan aane kaa ye mausam hai
ab tabeeyat na khayaalon se bahal paayegi

haay paani ki ye rimjhim ye guledaar phuhaar
aise nas nas mein teri chaah jagaa jaati hai
jaise pinjre mein kisi qaid pade panchhi ko
apni aazaad udaanon ki yaad aati hai
ab to aa jaao
ab to aa jaao meri maang ke sindoor suhaag
saans teri hai
saans teri hai tere naam pe mit jaayegi
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi

aisi hi raat to wo thhi ke teri nazron ne
mujhe pehnaayaa thhaa jab pyaar ke kapdon kaa libaas
aur us raat bhi aisi hi sharaabi thhi fizaa
jab teri baanhon mein mehki thhi meri saans-o-adaa (?)
aur ab aisi
aur ab aisi jawaan rut mein akeli main hoon
aa jaa warnaa
aa jaa warnaa ye shamaa kaanp ke bujh jaayegi
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi
aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
par thahar wo jo wahaan
par thahar wo jo wahaan lete hain footpaathon par
laash bhhi jinki kafan tak na yahaan paati hai
aur wo jhonpde chhat bhi na hai sar par jin ke
chhaate chhappar hi jahaan zindagi so jaati hai
pehle in sab ke liye
pehle in sab ke liye ek imaarat gadh loon
phir teri maang
phir teri maang sitaaron se bhari jaayegi
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi
aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai
aaj to tere binaa neend nahin aayegi

I love this song, both for the wistful yearning in Asha Bhonsle’s part, as well as the strong purpose in Rafi’s part of the song. I do seem to remember hearing this song fairly often in those days, so I guess this song was one of the popular songs from this movie, along with Dekh ti hi raho … and Caravan guzar gaya …, but I never heard anything about the movie. What a pity! On the other hand, maybe we were just not ready for harsh reality in those days, and preferred to live in a dream land where everything was rosy and beautiful.

Thanks for the song, Atul!
