Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hu tu tu tu tu

Posted on: February 4, 2011

This is a song that I had never heard before ! And this song is an unusual song in more ways than one.

This song is a teasing song between the spouses. Both of them claim that he/she has to do the hard work and the other is having a nice time. The lyrics (by Shailendra) are quite playful and interesting. The filler words “hu tu tu tu” basically means “kabaddi kabaddi”, which are the words that a kabaddi player has to utter while raiding the opponent’s side.

This song is sung by Lata and Mahendra Kapoor. I am not aware about the cast of this movie, so I am not sure about the actors on whom this song is picturised.

The movie is called “Memdidi” (1961). Now, Memdidi is a word like Memsaab which is popular in Bengal, though not in other parts of the country. The word didi (sister) has a ring of informality about it as compared to the word saab, and I wonder why this word failed to get popular elsewhere. Wanna be lady bloggers, who want to emulate our beloved Memsaab in the blog world may find this word useful for their possible nickname. 😀

Salil Chaudhary is the music director. Salil Chaudhary using Mahendra Kapoor’s voice ! Now that is an unusual combination, and to the best of my knowledge, this is perhaps the only such song where Mahendra Kapoor has sung for Salil Chaudhary. And it must be said that Mahendra Kapoor has done a nice job of it.

This is a nice song to listen to, even if one is listening to this song for the first time. And I suspect that many readers may well be listening to this song for the first time, like I did.

Atul ji,

This song is performed as a group dance in a wedding situation in the movie.

Mem Didi is a social movie, built around the life of people living in a chawl in Bombay. David and Jayant are the senior patriarchs of this chawl. Lalita Pawar is a rich lady who has fallen on hard times and has to move to this chawl. Tanuja is her niece who stuides outside Bombay, and Lalita Pawar makes all effort to keep away the news of her hard times from Tanuja.

This song is towards the beginning of the movie. Lalita has not yet moved into the chawl. A predictable situation occurs; the marriage of the daughter of one of the neighbors is fixed, and he is unable to make all the necessary arrangements for the event. David and Jayant rally other neighbors to help this person, and the wedding is concluded amiably. This song is placed during this seuqence, as a group performance for the guests. I am not able to identify the lead pair in this song.

From the credits in the movie, the list of other actors is Dhumal, Sulochna, Nazar, Hari Shivdasani, Rashid, and then some un familiar names viz., Geetanjali, Anwaribai, Aruna, Shivji Bhai, A Sen, M Khopkar, Bishen Khanna, Viren etc. I cannot hazard a guess on the names of the lead pair for this song.

Oh, this is SUCH a sweet movie!!!
One of the best movies I have seen.
Atul, I know you’d much rather watch a song video than “waste” time watching a movie, but this one is totally worth it.
Heart-warming story, excellent acting and chemisty between the characters – just fantastic.

I don’t think it was a commercial success – but that’s often the way with the box-office at Bollywood, isn’t it?

Now that you have described it as a sweet movie, want to see it. Let me see if I can get a VCD of this movie. Who knows, I may already have it with me. 😀
