Chhedo dhun matwaalon ki

I have talked before about the thrill of locating some of the less-known songs of your childhood days on the internet. You probably know just the first couple of lines, you may not even know any details more than this but you last heard the song in your childhood.

No problem. Nowadays, thanks to youtube, dailymotion and other sites which help us to nail down these songs, we are usually able to somehow locate them on the net. I have found quite a few songs this way. To mention just a few of these – “She’s very pretty” (Priya), “O paape na Sharma” (Sagaai), “Kamar patli” (Kahin Din Kahin Raat), Nainon mein darpan hai (Aarop). In all these cases, I knew the first couple of lines of the song, so it was a piece of cake to trace it down on the net.

But what if you do not even know the first couple of lines? Or maybe they are very different from what you THOUGHT they were? Maybe you only know a couple of lines from an antara? Maybe you used that and it did not show up on a search? Maybe you could not check with others about it either (for whatever reason). But the song is somewhere in your sub-conscious – all three lines of it.

Now when such a song comes totally out of the blue and hits you one fine day when you are randomly checking out songs on youtube, I can tell you the thrill level is SOMETHING. You jump up in disbelief, almost as if you’ve cracked the Da Vinci Code.

The last time this happened to me was when I came across “kaanton mein phasa aanchal” (Do Dil).

Today I’ve come across another song in this category.

Now this is the ultimate picnic song of my childhood. I remember this song being one of the standard “ice-breaker” songs when we’d be travelling by bus to some picnic spot, maybe to a lake or some waterfalls.

I always thought the song started with “mehfil hai dilwaalon ki”. At least that’s how we always sang it. And our second line used to be “bheegi bheegi chaalon ki”. We’d then go “sheher se door, nashe mein choor, picnic hai dilwaalon ki”. Lovely song!!!

Today, when I was casually checking out songs on youtube, I saw this video with title “picnic hai dilwalon ki”. I got a bit curious and clicked on it.

And yaaaaaaaaay!!!! It IS my childhood picnic song. A million thanks to the guy who uploaded it to youtube.

Have watched the video a million times today. Ok, that’s obviously an exaggeration – the view count right now is 598. I don’t know how much it was when I discovered it but I have contributed considerably to its reaching this level. I am surprised that a song that was uploaded a year ago has only so many hits. Maybe one of those gems that people are not aware of.

It does not help that the video title is not the first line of the song (though I am SO thankful it is not – otherwise I might never have clicked on it. 😉 ).

Turns out, all these years, I’d got the first two lines completely wrong. They are “chhedo dhun matwaalon ki, behki behki chaalon ki”. The rest is fine.

I was also very surprised to see that this is such an old song. It is from 1958. I somehow had the impression when I was in school that this was one of those early 1970s songs. Not that it matters. As far as I am concerned, this is a timeless classic. It is a wonderfully upbeat song, 100% picnic material – and the video does total justice to the peppiness of the song (although I wish the quality of the video had been better).

I am a huge fan of Johny Walker – whenever I see his name in the credits of a movie, I am delighted. I already know there will at least be SOMETHING I will enjoy in the movie.

Johny Walker had this signature walk and style of dancing – and one can see it here. Combine that with Rafi saab singing a peppy tune for him and Johny is unstoppable. He is just SO good and SO much fun. Don’t miss his dancing here – and Rafi saab’s voice!!!

Considering I hit upon this video purely by chance, it is such a delight to see that the song that I last heard sometime in the 1970s is picturised in such a bindaas atmosphere. A real picnic atmosphere.

Please listen to this – and spread the good word. I am sure that picnics take place nowadays also – I do not know which the current hot picnic songs are. But you could surprise your picnic group by springing this one on them. ? This song SO deserves to be known better.

And thank you for giving me this opportunity of sharing my thrill of today with you.

Song-Chhedo dhun matwaalon ki (Ghar Sansaar) (1958) Singer-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki
chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki
chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki

kya kya jalwe dikhlaata hoon
dekho mere sang
iske nainon ka jaado
uske aanchal ka rang
aa aa aa aa

kya kya jalwe dikhlaata hoon
dekho mere sang
iske nainon ka jaado
uske aanchal ka rang
chali hawa , udi ghata
lambi zulfonwaalon ki
chali hawa , udi ghata
lambi zulfonwaalon ki
chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki
chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki

ye din hai pyaar ka
hum tumse pyaar karna maangta
mausam bahaar ka
ye dil bhi tumpe marna maangta
babuji ki taang pe jo dhoti hai phansi
chhalki padti hai dekho haseenon ki hansi
babuji ki taang pe jo dhoti hai phansi
chhalki padti hai dekho haseenon ki hansi
nazar ladi phisal padi
topi topiwaalon ki
nazar ladi phisal padi
topi topiwaalon ki
chhedo dhun matwaalon ki
behki behki chaalon ki
sheher se door
nashe mein choor
picnic hai dilwaalon ki

Thanks a lot for posting this, Atul.
Heard it again just now and it is just so peppy and lovely.

I realise I did not say anything about the others involved in this song. It is not just Rafi saab. Asha’s voice is also wonderful here. And the music by Ravi is just so catchy. I am really surprised this song is not as well-known as I think it should be. Hopefully now it will become more popular.

Very fun. I was wondering if one of the extras was a very young Dharmendra– in the beginning you see him. Anyway it is hard to tell.

Actually the song is picturised on four actors. Asha Bhosle sings for Kum Kum and an unknown actress while Rafi sings for Johney Walker and Rajendra Kumar
