Baaje re paayal baaje

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is another gem of a song from the 1964 movie Hameer Hatth. This is a semi classical composition, rendered so well by Manna Dey. The composoition is by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyaya, and the beautiful lyrics in chaste Hindi, are by Neelkanthh Tiwari. The words are just beautiful, and need a careful listen.

The movie starred some well known names of that era, viz. Nirupa Roy, Jairaj, Anita Guha, Sapru, Vijaya Choudhary, BM VYas, Manhar Desai etc. I reproduce below the detailed story line information that is shared by Arunkumar ji Deshmukh, in his comment on the earlier song posted from this movie (Nigaahon se dil mein chale aayiegaa ).

“This is the story of Rana Hameer of Ranthambore in Rajasthan. It details how Rana refuses to merge with the empire of Allauddin Khilji. Enraged, Khilji attacks and gets defeated by Rana. When peace talks fail, Khilji tries crooked ways thru his court dancer Shabnam, but here too Rana is victorious.

There is a subplot of a love affair between Mirmangol, chief of Khilji’s army and Mallika, Khilji’s sister, in which Rana gives shelter to Mirmangol.

Besides good songs, the war and hunting scenes are extremely convincing.

This is a famous folklore even today in Rajasthan.”

In the last stanza it looks like ‘chhanke kangna’ and not ‘jhanke’. Kindly confirm.
