Chaandni raat aur taare khile hon

Posted on: May 27, 2011

In my younger days, K L Saigal was a “boring” singer, but now I can not have enough of K L Saigal songs. I find listening to K L Saigal songs a divine experience these days, as it reminds me of those days several decades ago, when most radios in India would play radio Ceylon in early mornings. 7-30 to 8 AM was the most “boring” period on Radio Ceylon, as it was during this time that “puraani filmon ke geet” were played, culminating into a K L Saigal song as the last song.

I would dearly love to have as many K L Saigal songs in this blog as I can locate, because I find great pleasure listening to such songs. There are people who may find old songs “boring” the way it was for me, and for them “old” songs may mean songs of 1970s, which were latest songs for me, but then that is how it is. I hope that such youngsters too will grow up to appreciate the old classics that were created by many musical greats.

Here is a lovely duet from “Bhakt Surdas” (1942). It is sung by Khursheed and K L Saigal. It was picturised on them too, I am sure.

D N Madhok is the lyricist. Gyan Dutt is the music director.

This is a “chhaayaageet” song from an era when this term itself was yet to be coined. 🙂

Song-Chaandni raat aur taare khile hon (Bhakt Surdas) (1942) Singers-Khursheed, K L Saigal, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics

chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
taaron ki chhainyyaa mein do dil mile hon
taaron ki chhainyyaa mein do dil mile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon

badariyaa mein chandaa ghadi bhar ko jaaye
badariyaa mein chandaa ghadi bhar ko jaaye
koi mere kaanon mein kuchh kahne aaye
koi mere kaanon mein kuchh kahne aaye
maanoon to hans de
na maanoon to roothhe
maanoon to hans de
na maanoon to roothe
duniyaa bisar jaaye wo silsile hon
duniyaa bisar jaaye wo silsile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon

main chhup hoon
main chhup hoon to unkaa jiyaa baithaa jaaye
main chhup hoon
main chhup hoon to unkaa jiyaa tilmilaaye
main chhup hoon
main chhup hoon to unkaa jiyaa baithaa jaaye
main chhup hoon
main chhup hoon to unkaa jiyaa tilmilaaye
kabhi main manaaun kabhi wo manaaye
kabhi main manaaun kabhi wo manaaye
nigaahen milen door saare gile hon
nigaahen milen door saare gile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
taaron ki chhainyyaa mein do dil mile hon
taaron ki chhainyyaa mein do dil mile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon
chaandni raat aur taare khile hon

Atul ji,
This film had some outstanding Saigal songs like:
Madhukar Shyam hamare chor
Maiya mori main nahin makhan khayo
Nisidin barsat nain hamare etc.
Saigal’s younger brother Mahendra Saigal was Krishna in this movie and his voice can be heard”surdas ji” in ‘Nisidin barsat’ song.
Harmandir Singh says in his Listener’s bulletin-” Nain heen ko raah dikha prabhu” song was recorded 14 times, but not satisfied with his own performance,Saigal wept openly and bitterly. After gaining composure he recorded a masterpice ! Sangeet sadhana ke aise Tapaswi kahan milenge?

Came here searching for the lyrics of this beautiful song; it was such a delight!
‘bikhar’ should be ‘bisar’ (forgotten).
