“Chandralekha” (1948) was a milestone for Indian movie industry. It was originally a South Indian movie produced by Gemini. After its huge success in South India, the movie was dubbed/remade into Hindi and its success among Hindi movie watchers paved the way for South Indian producers to venture into producing Hindi movies, not just as remake of South Indian movies, but also original Hindi movies.

When a small kid has to be put to sleep, the mother sings him/her a soothing lullaby. It is not just that only small kids appreciate lullabies. Grownups are just as receptive to them. It is a coincidence that the movies whose songs I am discussing today bear the same name as that of later day movies that I am more familiar with. Thus I discussed a song of “Heer Ranjha” (1948) and then “Sangam” (1954) while most people are more familiar with these movies of later vintage, viz “Heer Ranjha” (1970) and “Sangam” (1964) respectively. Likewise, when one talks of “Abhimaan”, the name of 1973 movie may come to the minds of most, including myself. But there was another movie of the same name that was produced in 1957.

I am aware of the movie called “Sangam” (1964), but I was not aware that another movie of the same name was produced exactly 10 years prior to “Sangam” (1964). This movie, i.e. “Sangam” (1954) had Kamini Kaushal, Shekhar, Shashikala, K. N. Singh, Murad, Rajrani, Chaman Puri, Ratan, Jeewan etc in it.

While looking for songs of “Heer Ranjha” (1970), I discovered that this was not the only movie bearing this title. There have been as many as six movies called “Heer Ranjha” over the decades ! “Heer Ranjha” (1970) -the fifth movie bearing this title is the most well known of them, thanks mainly to its music. Prior to this movie, “Heer Ranjha” (1948) -the fourth movie with this title, was the most well known movie of this name.
