Kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten

Posted on: May 2, 2011

While looking for songs of “Heer Ranjha” (1970), I discovered that this was not the only movie bearing this title. There have been as many as six movies called “Heer Ranjha” over the decades ! “Heer Ranjha” (1970) -the fifth movie bearing this title is the most well known of them, thanks mainly to its music. Prior to this movie, “Heer Ranjha” (1948) -the fourth movie with this title, was the most well known movie of this name.

It is interesting to notice that Lata, who sang in “Heer Ranjha” (1970) has also sung in “Heer Ranjha” (1948). Here is this rare Lata song from “Heer Ranjha” (1948). Only the audio of this song is available, but it appears from the star cast that Mumtaz Shanti, who played Heer, lip synced this song on screen.

Wali Sahab, who also directed this movie, wrote the lyrics. Music of this song was composed by Sharmaji, who later on became known as Khayyam. In fact, this movie had music by Khayyam and his partner, who were known as music director duo of Sharmaji Vermaji those days. Yes, I am not joking. There actually used to be a music director duo of this name those days. For simplicity, I will treat this song as being composed by Khayyam, but if one wants to be pedantic, this song may have been credited to Sharmaji Vermaji in the original records.

I request my knowledgeable readers to throw more lights of Sharmaji Vermaji.

Here is this lovely song from “Heer Ranjha” (1948).

Song-Kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten (Heer Ranjha) (1948) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Wali Saheb, MD-Sharma ji Verma Ji (Khayyam)

Lyrics

kaise kaatoon
kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten,

kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten,
aa baalmaa

tujh bin mere din hain soone
sooni tujh bin meri raaten
tujh bin mere din hain soone
sooni tujh bin meri raaten
birhaa ki badariyaa chhaayi
birhaa ki badariyaa chhaayi
aur aag bani barsaaten
kaise kaatoon
kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten,
aa baalmaa
aa saajnaa
aa zaalmaa
aa saajnaa
aa zaalmaa

chupchaap hai chaand sitaare
cupchaap hain nain hamaare
chupchaap hai chaand sitaare
chupchaap hain nain hamaare
chupchaap hain sunne waale
chupchaap hain sunne waale
ham kisse dil ki baaten
kaise kaatoon
kaise kaatoon ye kaalii raaten,
aa baalamaa
aa saajaaa
aa zaalmaa
aa saajnaa aa zaalmaa

mere naina neer bhare hain
nainon mein teer bhare hain
meri ?? rahe adhoore
meri ?? rahe adhoore
meri huyi piyaa se baaten
kaise kaatoon
kaise kaatoon ye kaali raaten,
aa baalmaa
aa saajnaa
aa zaalmaa
aa saajnaa
aa zaalmaa

Atul ji,
Khaiyyam, who was born as Mohd.Zahoor in 1927 at Jalunder, learnt initial music from Pt. Amarnath and Husnalal-Bhagatram.He came to Bombay in 1946 and acted in Yeh Hai Zindagai(1947) as well as sang a duet with Zoharabai Amabalawali for Romeo & Juliet(1947).
He worked as Astt.to Husn.-Bhagat;Bulo C Rani and Aziz Khan.
It is during the period of working with Aziz Khan as Astt.,he became friendly with one Mr.Varma who was also Asstt. to Aziz Khan.
Music to Heer Ranjha(1948) was given by 3 people,Aziz Khan,Varmaji and Sharmaji(Mohd.Zahoor aka Khaiyyam).Out of 11 songs 6 songs were done by Varmaji/Sharmaji and 5 were done by Aziz Khan.
After this film Khaiyyam separated and Varmaji continued to assit Aziz Khan.
Khaiyyam got his first independent break with Footpath (1953),till that time he was working as asstt. to Husn./Bhagatram.
Heer Ranjha was the only film of Sharmaji & Varmaji !
Incidentally, the name on the 78rpm record of this song, the name appears as Shamji & Varmaji.

Thanks for this useful information. If this was the only movie of Sharmaji Vermaji then that makes matters simpler for me.

There was another Music Director in this movie. His name is Aziz Khan or Aziz Hindi, he is the real composer of this song.
