Duniya na bhaaye mohey ab to bulaa le

Posted on: July 10, 2011

Here is a song from “Basant Bahaar” (1956) that I may have heard in the past but without paying much attention. This time, when I got the lyrics of this song (sent by nahm), I paid close attention to the lyrics. While doing that , one cannot but help pay attention to the singing and the music as well. And while doing that, one realises that this song is an unparalled combination of sensational singing, superb lyrics and wonderful music.

Prima facie, it appears an easy song, but try to sing it, and then one realises what unbelievable heights the voice of Rafi manages to scale in this song, which ordinary mortals can only dream about.

This song is picturised on Bharat Bhushan. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan and the movie is “Basant Bahaar”(1956). Incidentally, I tend to mix this movie with “Baiju Bawra” quite often, because both movies have similar storylines.

Atul ji,
Excellent song.it has got lyric, melody, music and Mohd.Rafi. Everything a good song must have to become memorable.
This song is in Raag-Todi and Taal-Punjabi Theka(Sitar khani).
There is a story behind the film Basant Bahar.
When Baiju Bawara came the songs became very famous, and not only that,Naushad got the FILM FARE Best Music Director award and Meena Kumari got Best Actress Award.
Once, when in a casual gettogether of filmi people somebody commented that Naushad was the king of Classical songs in movies,Shankar(of S-J Team) felt it was a challenge to him.He determined to make a similar film on music and prove that he was no less than Naushad.Since they were flooded with work that time,it took him couple of years to catch Mr.Ramchandra Ganti,a very wealthy man from Hyderabad to finance a film to be produced under the banner of Vishva Bharati Films(a cover up for his own company). He got Mr Tarasu(govind Raju),to write the story of Basant Bahar and Rajinder singh Bedi to write Dia and Sc.Play.
The film was made, but neither it got any awards, nor the songs proved better than Baiju Bawra.
Some of the songs of Basant Bahar were extremely melodious and based on classical raagas.
Actually, there need not be any comparison between Naushad and S-J.Both gave us immense pleasure, but this is how the show business is !

arunji, to differ from your opinion with ‘kshma chahta hun’this film was classical as good as baijubawara. no doubt initially it did not get good response.but later on it did. and what a fantastic sangeet and singers of high caliber finalise the film with future music lovers to reme. the film and songs.this film was released in roxy cinema near opera house bombay(mumbai) which had a prestige to release the film of good status. if i dont forget his owner used to take keen interest in before releasing the film. i hd seen this film atleast seven times .
