Maine bhi husn ki nazron mein jagah paayi hai

This article is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog. This artcle is the 100th article by Sudhir in this blog.

Another one of those songs that must find its due place on this blog. This is a gem of a Talat rendition, that has been a favorite of mine since childhood. As I listened to it again today, I checked and realized it is not yet posted. And so here it is, a very melodious and hummable soft creation that simply steals into your heart.

In the filmography of Hindi cinema, three movies by name “Wanted” have been produced. Before the 2009 version (Salman, Ayesha) and the 1983 version (Mithun, Heena Kausar), there is a version that was released in 1961. Produced by Golden Films and directed by AN Ansari, this movie is a B/C grade social drama cum thriller. The main actors include Vijay Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Johnny Walker, Shammi, Anwar Hussain, Helen, Manorama, Nazir Hussain, Dulari, Rajan Kapoor, Dilip Dutt, Behari, Rafi Ajmeri, Tony Walker and AN Ansari himself. I have not been able to locate any further details about this movie, or the actor Vijay Kumar; inputs from other knowledgeable readers are requested to complete the information about this movie.

The song itself is a wooing-cum-making-an-impression-on-the-lady-love song. The words are simply so beautiful, one just wonders whether such promises can really be made in real life. A nagma that is studded so wonderfully with beautiful epithets and words that carry a much deeper meaning than the tempo of the song would lead us to believe. A couple of lines in the 3rd antaraa says, ‘meri jaan duniya ke darr se na badal jaana tum, kyun ki ab mil ke na milne bhi rusvaai hai’ – Darling, do not leave me under the fear of this society, for now, after knowing each other, if we don’t rally together, that is also a cause for dishonor. What thoughtful words and ideas, makes one listen very closely to the lyrics. The superb lyrics are from the pen of Shakeel Badayuni and the wonderful melody is by Ravi. The singing voice is Talat Mehmood – and the combination just keeps echoing in the mind, even after the song is done.

Song-Maine bhi husn ki nazron mein jagah paayi hai (Wanted) (1961) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

main ne bhi husn ki nazron mein jagah paayi hai
tum mile ho to muhabbat se bahaar aayi hai
mere seene pe zaraa haath to rakh kar dekho
dil ki dhadkan ye nahin pyaar ki shehnaayi hai

ye haseen roop ye zulfon ke nasheele saaye
jaise bharpoor qayaamat pe shabaab aa jaaye
ye haseen roop ye zulfon ke nasheele saaye
jaise bharpoor qayaamat pe shabaab aa jaaye
rukh se parde ko zaraa der hataa rahne do
tum ko dekhegaa wahi jis ki qazaa aayi hai
rukh se parde ko zaraa der hataa rahne do
tum ko dekhegaa wahi jis ki qazaa aayi hai
mere seene pe zaraa haath to rakh kar dekho
dil ki dhadkan ye nahin pyaar ki shehnaayi hai

dil to kyaa jaan bhi main tum pe lutaa saktaa hoon
zindagi maut ke parde mein chhupaa saktaa hoon
dil to kyaa jaan bhi main tum pe lutaa saktaa hoon
zindagi maut ke parde mein chhupaa saktaa hoon
mujhe gham do ki khushi ab hai tumhaari marzi
maine to ishq mein mitne ki qasam khaayi hai
mujhe gham do ki khushi ab hai tumhaari marzi
maine to ishq mein mitne ki qasam khaayi hai
mere seene pe zaraa haath to rakh kar dekho
dil ki dhadkan ye nahin pyaar ki shehnaayi hai

ishq ki raah mein saahil bhi hai toofaan bhi hain
is mein izzat bhi hai ruswaayi ke saamaan bhi hain
ishq ki raah mein saahil bhi hai toofaan bhi hain
is mein izzat bhi hai ruswaayi ke saamaan bhi hain
mere seene pe zaraa haath to rakh kar dekho
dil ki dhadkan ye nahin pyaar ki shehnaayi hai

A tragic death of Saeeda by the hand of her husband..
He is Vijay Kumar, Johny Walker’s urf Badruddin Kazi’s Brother.
A popular song of radio days.

Sudhir ji,
WANTED(1961),was actually a very interesting film and very entertaining too !
The story,in short, is Seth Deendayal(N.Hussain) has a fast talking wife and a daughter Sarita(Sayeeda Khan). His driver Vilayati(Johnny walker) and his mate Chamki(Shammi) always engage in jokes and witty duel with Seth, malkin and Sarita.Use of matching words is common.(The same theme was also found later in 1980 Khoobsurat-Rekha’s film).
Deepak(Vijay kumar),brother of Sethji’s manager Ramesh(Rajan kapoor) is selected for Sarita.Out of blues comes Khanna(Anwar Hussain),old partner of Sethji. In olden days they both were pirates of the sea and were wanted by the Police.Khanna blackmails Sethji and also wants to marry Sarita.Khanna is murdered and Sethji is arrested. In the end Sethji is proved innocent but goes to jail for Piracy.
Vijay Kumar was (as rightly pointed out by Derubala ji) Johnny walker’s yet another brother ,who was a flop Hero of about 7-8 movies.(kaun apna kaun paraya, dillagi, chalbaz, shaheed bhagat singh, imtihan, jai ambe maa etc)

Director Brij Sadanah shot dead his wife Sayeeda Khan and daughter Namrata and killed himself too on 21-10-1990,but not before he wrote a note to Police admitting the crime, when he was fully drunk.
His son Kamal Sadanah is an (or was an ?) actor, and owner of Anghath Productions, named after Kamal’s son.

Arun ji,

Just a bit of additional info on the reason behind this carnage. I came across the following on the internet while looking for something else.

“Brij Sadanah married Saeeda Khanum (Modern Girl, Honeymoon, Crorepati etc.) against the wishes of both families. Saeeda converted to Hinduism and changed her name to Sudha. Their daughter, Namrata, fell in love with a Muslim boy and wanted to marry. Brij could not accept this. On the fateful day, he got drunk, shot his daughter and his wife, and then killed himself with the same gun. They also have a son, Kamal who played lead actor opposite to Kajol in “Bekhudi”. Kamal is married to Lisa John and has a son by name Angath.”
