Duniyaa kyaa hai hamse suno

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

The versatility of one voice has been unmatched in the annals of Hindi film music. A voice that is a match for any emotion, from one end of the spectrum to another. A voice that renders gaiety and fun as effortlessly as sadness and regrets of life. A voice that could woo the lady love and call out to the Almighty God with the conviction that one actually strains the hearing, expecting an answer come back from the heavens. A voice that has the capability to merge itself into any personality so totally and unobtrusively that the listener could never separate the voice from the character. That is the voice of Rafi Saab, a divine gift that dwelt on this earth for single lifetime, and left behind a legacy that would span an eternity. It is indeed a matter of good fortune to be born in this era, and be touched by the voice of this marvelous, unearthly tenor – a sound that appears maybe once in an aeon.

This song that I picked up from the internet is a complete novelty for me, having heard it for the very first time just two days ago. The bubbling zest in the voice is too much to keep your fingers from tapping, or holding back your own expressions from the sound box from humming along with this infectious creation. The near nonsense lyrics are written by Raja Mehndi Ali Khan, and the unrepress-able composition is from the baton of the duo of Bipin-Baabul. The song has been rendered with such complete abandonment, I am sure those who love the foot tapping numbers would try to sing this loudly, alone in a place where others may not hear. 😀 😀

This lively creation is from the 1958 film Chandu, a movie from NR Productions, Bombay, and directed by a someone I am sure is using a pseudonym – a director named Majnu. 🙂 The movie is apparently a grade B social drama, as is apparent from the obscurity factor. The star cast of this movie includes Daljit, Meena Shorey, Shasikala, Pran, Gulab, Gope, Sunder, Om Prakash, Mehmood, Harun, Satish Batra etc. The line up listed indicates this could well be a comedy movie. If so, this song would be so effortlessly be a part of it. Only the audio of the song is available, so it is not possible to comment on the picturization of this fun song.

Another thought that came to my mind as I heard this clinking jingle for the first time – I have been waiting to find a song that talks about ‘gol gappa’. Here is one – not the type you can eat, but telling about the state of affairs about this crazy world. So switch on and enjoy this unrestrained enthusiasm, in a voice that defines much more than just an era in the Hindi films music.

sudhir ji,
CHANDU(1958),was directed by MAJNU.His real name was Harold Lewis. At the moment I dont have much info about him axcept that he directed Paapi-43/Badnami-46/Zamane ki hawa-52/Son of alibaba-55/Malika-56/Baghi Sardar-56/Basre ki hoor-56/Tatar ka chor-55 .In most of his films,he also acted.
One correction in the cast is that MEENA SHOREY did not act in this film.
It was not possible as she was already in Pakistan from 1955,doing films there.
Meena and Roop Shorey, due to their success of Ek Thi Ladki, were called to Lahore by J.C.Anand in 1955.He wanted to copy Guru dutt’s Mr.&Mrs.55.She acted in that movie ,Miss 56.
This was actually the swan song of Meena.Soon after,Roop Shorey returned to India, but Meena decided to stay in Pakistan. She never came back to India.(Roop Shorey waited for her till he died in 1973.)She did some side roles in Sarfarosh-56/Bedari(a copy of our Jagriti(54)-in 57/Jagga-58/Bachha Jhamura-59/Behroopiya-60/Mausiqar-62.Her last film was Khamosh Raho-64(she acted as an old lady).
Her last days in Pakistan were very sad.Her 2 more marriages were flops. She was seen in a function begging for her sister’s marriage. She died penniless in 1989 and ber burial done on charity money.
The actress in CHANDU was Meena,a budding artist then.I think, she was Heroine in Chandu, and Sundar was Hero !.
She has acted in some 80 odd films, fromDukhiyari & Pathzad(48) to Kalyug ka Arjun(1997) including Anari(59),Jab pyar kisise hota hai-61,Hare rama hare krishna(71) etc. You will find her name in the credits.
(some more films are Ek do teen,Bada aadmi,Apne apne,Bhabhi aakhir bhabhi hoti hai, shrimati 420,Albeli,Actress etc).
-AD
N.B. The Gol Gappe,of Delhi are called Paani Puri in Mumbai and are called ” GUP CHUP ” in Hyderabad.

Arun ji,

Thanks once again, for the detailed inputs from your side. You are right about Meena Shorey; if she left for Lahore in 1955, then the timing for working in the film Chandu (1958) does not synchronize. There might well be another actress by the name Meena.

Let me check some more to confirm this info.
