“Ladki” (1953) is a movie starring Bharat Bhushan,Vyjyantimala,Kishore Kumar, Anjali devi etc. I find, much to my own surprise, that I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie ! I also notice that I have mentioned C Ramchadra as the music director for those songs, but in the song that I am going to discuss here, R Sudarshan-Dhaniram are listed as the music directors ! I request my knowledgeable readers to help clarify this confusion of music directors.

“Bikhhre Moti” (1951) is a movie I have little idea about. But I have gathered that this movie had actors like Jeevan, Neelam, Kamini Kaushal, Nigar, Jayant, Ranjana, Sherry etc in it. From the movie title, the movie appears to be a tear jerker movie.

When one watches Hindi movies of the past, including their songs, and compare them with the present time, one notices that people back then had too much of time and patience. Means of instant communications were not there. People (namely the lady or parents) who will have their beloved husband/son gone to a distant place for work, will not hear from him for years, and they will patiently wait. This wonderful song is from the film Tadbeer (1945). The film was produced and directed by Jayant Desai, and featured KL Saigal, Suraiyyaa, Mubarak, Rehana, Jillo, Salvi, Reva Shankar, Shalini, and Shashi Kapoor as a child actor. Born in 1938, Shashi would be just seven years when this film was released. It is possible that this could be his debut movie or definitely one of the very first few movies that he acted in. (I have not been able to track specific information on this).

The name Vasant Desai brings to memory a long list of songs rooted in the classical and folk traditional music of India. On this blog, today we have another celebration. With this post, the blog now carries 100 songs composed by Vasant Desai. In a career that lasted more than four decades, Vasant Desai was selective in the associations he made and never strayed away from his musical foundations. He scored the music for less than fifty films during this time. Thirty of these films are represented on this blog.

As bicycle songs go, this must be the ultimate bicycle song. In this song, people ,led by Johny Walker, are riding bicycles and going in a procession singing this song. I have not watched the movie, but what I can deduce from the picturisation and the lyrics is that they are raising their voices against a person in authority who is using his public office for personal gains. So such things happened in those days also. 🙂

“Kundan” (1955) was a movie based on the celebrated French novel “Les Miserables”. Adapting it to Hindi movies meant that there was enough scope for melancholic songs in it 🙂 And the cast included Nimmi, who specialised in just that kind of roles. 😀
