Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aawaaraa ae mere dil

Posted on: August 1, 2011

In olden days, most Hindi movie going population used to be quite simple and naive. Give them the usual song and dance and they went back home happy. But if you gave them anthing different, they they would be out of their depth and fail to turn up to watch such movies. So I am not suprised that movies made on nonmainstream themes failed to attract audiences, even when they won critical acclaim and even Government awards.

“Raat Aur Din” (1967) was too sophisticated and advanced for the ordinary Indian movie going public of those days. The movie dealt with the psychic case of a woman suffering from split personality. Nargis had come out of retirement to perform the lead role and she won critical acclaim as well as a National award for her stellar performance, but as mentioned above, the movie going public of that time were not evolved enough in their tastes to appreciate this movie.

Here is a song from this movie. This song has two versions. The slow version is picturised on Nargis. The fast version is picturised as party song on Laxmi Chhaayaa and others.

Both versions are sung by Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

It is a lovely song from a remarkable movie.

aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa

veeraanon mein,
sehraaon mein
aate jaate in raahon mein
tere ishaaron par
naachi main jeewan bhar
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa

raat aur din ke
ye do chehre
kab tak pehnoon
kuch to kah re
kaun hoon main kyaa hoon
sach hoon ke saayaa hoon
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa ae mere dil
jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
aawaaraa

There is a middle stanza in the slow version as below, which has been edited out in the video above:
Ab tu batla ae dll mere, baaki hain ab kitne phere
Ab to ruke yeh safar, mera bhi to koi ghar
Aawaara ae mere dil …….
