Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Haay unki wo nigaahen

Posted on: August 2, 2011

1950s saw a trend of suspense movies in Hndi movies. These movies were obviously inspired by Western movies of the same genre. Some nice suspense movies got made in that decade.

Hindi suspense movies had one thing that was missing in Western suspense movies, viz songs. 😀 And seeing what great musical talents Hindi movies had at that disposal, music lovers have been left with a rich legacy of great songs from such movies.

“Aakhri Daao” (1958) is a movie that that genre. it was produced by Shekhar who had also acted as the hero in this movie.

This movie had some wonderful songs in it. If one was not told the name of the music director, one may well guess the music director to be O P Nayyar or S D Burman, but neither of them were the music directors of this movie. The music director of this movie was Madan Mohan !

Here is an awesome song from this movie. this song is picturised as a car song. Nutan and Shammi (a lady who later played Character roles as Shammi Aunty) have taken a taxi driven by Shekhar and they are enjoying themselves by singing this song seated on the backseat and distracting the driver. The song is sung with gusto by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.

The closeup shows the “taxi” rhythmically swaying with unerring accuracy and that is a dead giveaway to the fact that it is just a cutout and not a real taxi on which this song is picturised.

Not that it matters. The sights of Bombay street are real though, and gives us a glimpse into the landscape of Bombay as it was more than half a century ago. Half a century ago, did I say ! How time has flown !

What a delightful song it is to listen to and watch. They do not make this kind of music these days.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm and that is how I became aware of this song.

Song-Haay unki wo nigaahen (Aakhri Daao) (1958) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics (Provided by nahm)

hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
ha aa aa aa aa

haaye unki wo nigaahen
dil dekhe jinki raahen
koi unse jaake poochhe
ham kyun na unhen chaahen
haaye unki wo nigaahen
dil dekhe jinki raahen
koi unse jaake poochhe
ham kyun na unhen chaahen
haaye unki wo nigaahen
he he he

jis din ham pehle pehle
roothhe thhe unse mil ke
jis din ham pehle pehle
roothhe thhe unse mil ke
us din bhi chupke chupke
kehte thhe ham yeh dil se
wo dil bhi koyi dil hai
jis mein pyaar nahin
haaye unki wo nigaahen
dil dekhe jinki raahen
koi unse jaake poochhe
ham kyun na unhen chaahen
haaye unki wo nigaahen
he he he

jaise jhukte hi jhukte
jhuk jaati hain yeh palken
jaise jhukte hi jhukte
jhuk jaati hain yeh palken
jaise lehra lehra ke
ruk jaati hain yeh zulfen
yoon samjho ham ko bhi
yoon hi qaraar nahin
haaye unki wo nigaahen
dil dekhe jinki raahen
koi unse jaake poochhe
ham kyun na unhen chaahen
haaye unki wo nigaahen
he he he

ye balkhaate se raste
ye matwaali si masti
ye balkhaate se raste
ye matwaali si basti
har su naghme hi naghme
har su masti hi masti
mil jaati is mein meri bhi bahaar kahin
haaye unki wo nigaahen
dil dekhe jinki raahen
koi unse jaake poochhe
ham kyun na unhen chaahen
haaye unki wo nigaahen
he he he

Nahm Bhai, Atul ji,

What a reminder and what a great song. Madan Mohan at his melodious best. And Nutan has done such a wonderful job, singing it with a lovely smile.
One of my long time favorites. There are some songs that I call my “humming partners” – I will be humming one of them while driving, or at other opportunities. This song is one from that list.

Thanks for posting, 🙂

Sir,

I had never heard or seen this song before i saw it on youtube a few days ago. The other song from this film https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2008/11/26/tujhe-kya-sunaun-main-dilruba/ has been a firm favourite since long, without knowing much about it and only having seen it on T.V. chhayageet/chitrahaar programmes and catching it every now and then on vividh bharati. Since this is Madan Mohan’s i thought there ought to be some more known/unkown gems. So that is the way i found this new song. Good to know somebody likes these songs apart from Atul ji, of course.

Regards.
