Badi cheez hai pyaar muhabbat

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Celebrating and remembering Kishore Da on the anniversary of his birth today. 🙂

So here is a question for all avid songs lovers of Hindi movies. Is there a song from Hindi movies that has the words “PYAAR” and “JHAGDAA” in the very same sentence? Of course, if I am asking this question in a write up, then sure I am going to write about such a song. 😀

Chacha Zindabaad (1959) is a wonderful comedy movie, that has a very impressive star cast. The line up includes Kishore Kumar, Anita Guha, Bhagwan, Sunder, Tun Tun, Raj Mehra, Gajanan Jagirdar, Om Prakash, Anoop Kumar, Manorama, Keshav Rana, besides others. The movie is produced and directed by Om Prakash, under the banner of Light and Shade Productions, Bombay.

The theme of the comedy is how the young and inexperienced folks handle the concept of love and relationship. Kishore and Anita are children of families that are neighbors. They have grown up together from childhood, and are extremely good and extremely close friends. However, they have this concept that they can be and should be friends only. So when they reach the marriageable age, and people in their families and friend circle begin hinting at a matrimonial alliance between them, the two revolt against the families and lay down the maxim that they will never marry each other. Incidentally, their fathers, played by Raj Mehra and Gajanan Jagirdar, conspire to go along with this plan. The two decide they will see less of each other, reduce the interaction and interference in each other’s life, and will start to see other eligible people for potential life partners. As this self imposed separation progresses, they start to realize their actual feelings for each other, and discover that they are actually in love. So as is bound to happen with such story lines, there is a lot of confusion created, Anita Guha comes very close to getting engaged to Anoop Kumar, there are altercations and stand offs generated due to jealousies, the two will be hostile and will clash when they are in each other’s presence, but they will pine for each other when alone. In the end, this emotional confusion is sorted out, and the two realize they are meant for each other and they get engaged. The title of the movie “Chacha Zindabad” refers to their own fathers. Both address the other’s father as Chacha. In the story line, these two “chachas” conspire to go along with the misconstrued separation to start with and then further conspire to create situations throwing them together or making them realize their true feelings for each other.

Coming to the song itself, the lyrics are penned by Rajendra Krishan and the melody is created by Madan Mohan. (For those who may recall, this movie has another extremely beautiful hit song, “Bairan Neend Na Aaye” sung by Lata; already posted on this blog.) The song under discussion, is presented right at the end of the movie – the ‘The End’ message is actually part of the song at the end. The situation between the two has been resolved, the engagement has happened, and now they are putting together a car in Kishore’s workshop, a thoroughly symbolic representation of putting together the ‘gaadi’ of matrimonial life. When viewed with this perspective, the fun and humor in the song is further underscored.

Kishore Da’s antics with his voice and throat are remarkably un-imitable. No one can really replicate the variety of tones and pitch and other qualities of voice, that Kishore Da is able to effortlessly pack into every fun song. Just a case in point, in this song, when the music director wanted to put a filler, then Lata for her part, sings “nee dha pa dha pa ma pa pa ma ga re saa”, and Kishore? Boy, he brings out the baffling “Makaee ka takdhum, chakai ka chakwa”; see if you can decipher that. 😀

And not only just the play with voice, Kishore Da also had a extremely fantastic sense of timing that made him a very successful comedy hero. I have written this before; no one, simply no one can sing Kishore Da’s funs songs, better than Kishore Da himself. Examples are too numerous to count and quote.

So on the occasion of his anniversary, enjoy is fabulous coming song, that has a lot of actors that appear as the song progresses – Bhagwan, Tun Tun, Gajanan Jagirdar, Raj Mehra, Anoop Kumar, Om Prakash, Manorama – besides of course the two primary protagonists, Kishore Da and Anita Guha themselves.

Enjoy !
