Aankhon se door door

Posted on: August 6, 2011

“Mashaal” (1950) is known mainly for the song ( Upar gagan vishaal )that announced the arrival of Manna Dey as a playback singer of note. But these movie also had other nice songs in it, even though these songs, unlike the Manna Dey song, have been forgotten with time.

Here is a delghtful song from “Mashaal” (1950). It is sung by Lata. Pradeep is the singer and music is composed by S D Burman. It is a song that I heard for the first time only just now and I loved it. The song desrves to be much better known among music lovers. Or who knows, this song could already be better known among music lovers.

The only jarring note, if I may say so, is the pronounciation of one word “poorv”. In the context of the song this word stands for “past”, but the singer pronounces the word as “poorab” which means “east”, which is not what the lyrics meant. It is a minor jarring note for me, and most other listeners may not even bother for such matters. This shows that the that the job of a lyricist is not over just by penning down the lyrics. The music director and the singer may not be fully conversant with the lyrics and they may need the assistance of the lyricist (or another person conversant wit the language) to tell the correct pronounciation of words to the singers. I have read that Anand Bakshi used to ensure it, and perhaps other lyricists to needed to do that.

Song-Aankhon se door door (Mashaal) (1950) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

aankhon se door door
aankhon se door door hain
par dil ke paas jo
kaun hain mere wo,
ho
kaun hain mere wo
koi bataa do re mujhe
koi bataa do
kaun hain mere wo
aankhon se door door
aankhon se door door hain
par dil ke paas jo
kaun hain mere wo,
ho
kaun hain mere wo

gupchup mere man mein jo base
kaun hain wo meet mere
kaun hain wo meet
kyaa unse meri hai koi poorv janam ki preet
poorv janam ki preet
pehli hi mulaaqaat mein apnese lage jo
kaun hain mere wo
aankhon se door door
aankhon se door door hain
par dil ke paas jo
kaun hain mere wo,
ho
kaun hain mere wo

ek meethi si uljhan mein uljhaa hai meraa jee
uljhaa hai meraa jee
praanon kaa papeehaa bhi pal pal pukaare pi
pal pal pukaare pi
main aaj kinke naam ki
main aaj kinke naam ki maalaa rahi piro
kaun hain mere wo
aankhon se door door
aankhon se door door hain
par dil ke paas jo
kaun hain mere wo,
ho
kaun hain mere wo

duniyaa mein sabhi se hai niraalaa meraa anuraag
niraalaa meraa anuraag
baahar se kuchh na dekhoon
bheetar jale chiraag
bheetar jale chiraag
main unko chaahti hoon
main unko chaahti hoon
jaanoon nahin jinko
kaun hain mere wo
aankhon se door door
aankhon se door door hain par dil ke paas jo
kaun hain mere wo,
ho
kaun hain mere wo

Dear Atul
Your effort is very commendable. You may be interested to note that Mashal is the first film where Lata sang for S D Burman although Sazaa was also released in the same year. As far as the word Purab is concerned, it is the apbhransh of the word Poorv ie it is a distorted but accepted form of the same word. Poorv or purab have two meanings. One is the direction (like poorab disha or more correctly Poorv, Pashchim etc) . The other meaning is “earlier” or “prior”
