Jai Hind ye Hind ki kahaaniyaan

This article is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

Greetings all on the 65th anniversary of Independence of our country from the rule of the Britishers.

Before 1947, the British government kept a strict censor check on the content of movies and songs, and used to ensure that no films containing patriotic themes or songs were certified. Some notable exceptions did happen though. A most significant example is ‘Aaj Himalaya Ki Choti Se Phir Hum Ne Lalkaara Hai’, from the 1943 film Kismat. It was the years of the second World War, and it is rumored that possibly the producers of this movie presented the logic that the song was directed against the potential Japanese onslaught from the east. (This is an unconfirmed but possible explanation.)

Here is another wonderful pre 1947 song, that talks about the glory and the history of India. This song and the movie somehow also made it through the censors. This song is from the film Maansarovar (1946). Directed by Mahesh Chandra, the star cast of this film includes Nishi Baran, Mazhar Haq, David, Kanhaiyyaa Lal, Gulab, Lakshman etc. The lyrics are by Saraswati Kumar Deepak and the music composition is by SN Tripathi.

A proposed claim to fame for this song is that this song is the first ever duet which brought together Mohammed Rafi and Geeta Dutt for the first time. (This is based on the description available on YouTube, and needs confirmation from other sources).

The song is apparently being sung by a group of children. This is based on one line in the song “hum nannhe naunihaal mil is desh ko jagaayenge”. There is not direct reference to an oppressor in this song. The song talks of the history and glory and ethnic unity of this country, and that one day the soldiers will sing from the ramparts of the qila (understood reference to Lal Qila). There is an underlying exhortation to achieve freedom. A wonderfully crafted song.

I absolutely agree with Sudhir Sir, that this is a wonderfully crafted song. Moreover, the positivity is captivating. I want to listen to this song again and again. Thanks a lot for this beautiful children’s song.

I have a few suggestions reg. doubtful words.

panchaar (?) ke itihaas ki – ‘panchaang’ ke itihaas ki

wo Hind jiski petiyon (?) se – wo Hind jiski ‘khetiyon’ se

deewaar (man ki putliyon) se (?) – deewar ‘nanhi’ putliyon se

Regards.

Nahm Bhai,

Thanks so much for the corrections. I listened to the song again, and do find agreement with two corrections, i.e. 2nd and 3rd.

I am not too sure about the 1st item, though. To me, the last syllable in this word sounds like ‘r’. As I played the song again, this time the word that comes to mind is ‘sansaar’. And as I read the line again it also makes better meaning.
‘sansaar ke itihaas ki
ye hain amar kahaaniyaan’

Would you agree?

Sudhir ji,
I have some thoughts on the above song.
First of all,I think this song is sung by Mohd.Rafi,Geeta Dutt(Roy,that time) AND BINAPANI MUKHERJEE.
If you listen the song carefully, you will definitely and clearly hear 3 distinct voices. After ‘rangeen savera’ onwards,in that stanza the singer is not geeta.
Please check once again.
Further,I think the First duet of Geeta and Rafi was from film Kashmir-utho aye watan ke naujawano.
your valued opinion on the two issues count.

Arun ji,

Repsonse to the easier question first. 🙂

The film Kashmir is from 1951, and hence the song ‘Uttho Ae Watan Ke Naujawaanon’ would be recorded much later than ‘Ye Hind Ki Kahaaniyaan’.

In the write up, I have indicated this as unconfirmed info, since I have seen this info on the YouTube posting only. The Geet Kosh unfortulatenly does not carry the details of singers for this song. I will try to track this issues some more and respond back with additional info, as soon as I can get hold of it.

Regarding the other question, I will try to listen to the song more carefully later today and then respond. 🙂
