This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Hanraj Behl started his career as a composer, in 1946 with the film Pujaari. He has been active in both the Hindi and Punjabi film industry as a music director. In Hindi films, he was active till 1974 (film released – Do Aankhen in 1974); and with Punjabi films he was active as late as 1982. He passed away in 1984. One of the films for which he had scored the music, was released many years after his departure. (Insaaf Ka Khoon, in 1991). With classical training background, his style of music has been semi classical and he has scored a large number of popular and famous songs.

The following synopsis of the film Ek Din Ka Baadshah, is condensed and edited from one of the detailed information posts by Arun ji Deshmukh.

“EK DIN KA BADSHAH” (1964), is a fantasy costume drama produced and directed by Jugal Kishore, under the banner of Jugal Productions. Jugal Kishore had an urge for acting in every film that he Produced or Directed. In this movie, he plays the role of the Baadshah. The theme of the film emphasizes that what you see is not the always truth. There are things beyond what meets the eye. Yusuf(Jairaj) is a spoilt son of Amber, a rich businessman in the kingdom. He usually spends his time with friends, enjoying drinks and games. One day while sitting in a pub, drinking with friends, he criticizes the king Aslam Parvez (Jugal Kishore), as to how the king mismanages the affairs of the kingdom and what actually should have been done. Incidentally the king, Aslam Pervez is sitting in disguise right next to him in the pub, and hears this. Next day, Yusuf is summoned to the court. The king makes him the Baadshah for Ek Din. During that one day, Yusuf learns his lesson as he struggles to manage the affairs of the kingdom. At the end of the day, he is rewarded by the king for his intelligence and honesty.

The songs of this film are written by Prem Warbartani. This song is one of the popular songs from this movie, that used to play often on the radio. The singing voice is that of Suman Kalyanpur. Only the audio of the song is available, and hence it is difficult to comment on its picturization.

Enjoy this now somewhat forgotten gem.

Lyrics

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm
ho ho ho

kahin sabra ki intehaa na ho jaaye
khuda ke liye meri baanhon mein aa ja
meri zindagi ka haseen chaand ban kar
mere dil ki gehraayee’on mein samaa jaa
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
apna banaa le
galey se lagaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le

na jaane mujhe kyaa pilaayaa hai toone
ke mein jaagte jaagte so gayee hoon
ke mein jaagte jaagte so gayee hoon
tere hi tassawur se chaunki thee lekin
tere hi tassawur mein gum ho gayee hoon
tere hi tassawur mein gum ho gayee hoon
tere hi tassawur mein gum ho gayee hoon
main gum ho gayee hoon
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le

mehakte huye reshmi gesu’on se
dulhan ban rahi hai
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le

sitaaron bhari zindagi ke safar mein
tujhe apni manzil banaane lagi hoon
tujhe apni manzil banaane lagi hoon
jhuke hain zameen aasmaan jiske aage
wo sar tere dar par jhukaane lagi hoon
wo sar tere dar par jhukaane lagi hoon
wo sar tere dar par jhukaane lagi hoon
jhukaane lagi hoon
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
apna banaa le
gale se lagaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
apna banaa le
gale se lagaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
mere mehboob mujhe apna banaa le
