Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye jhuki jhuki jhuki jhuki nigaahen

Posted on: August 23, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Aao Pyaar Karen (1964) is a romantic comedy from the house of S Mukherjee, and Filmalya Productions, directed by RK Nayyar. The normal rich-girl-poor-boy-love-story, in this case, is presented as a comedy, and not a sob story. The male lead actor, as with many S Mukherjee productions, is Joy Mukherjee, paired with Saira Banu. At the time of making this movie, both the actors were comparatively fresh in the industry, having made their debut in 1960 (Love In Simla) and 1961 (Junglee). The other key players in the star cast are Rajendranath, Madhavi, Marilyn, Shyam Chatterjee, Jayant Shah etc.

Joy Mukherjee plays a young man from a middle class family. He falls in love with Saira Banu, who belongs to a very rich family. The girl’s parents are very much against this match, but they agree on the condition that Joy Mukherjee has to earn a lot of money and become a rich man. The rest of the film is about this young man’s adventure with many different kinds of jobs and professions, in an effort to earn some quick money, and to save his love life.

This song is being performed in the business office of a traditional Indian businessman. It is the traditional sitting arrangement on the floor, with traditional desks, and the walls are adorned with Sanskrit mantras. Apparently Joy Mukherjee is on one of his money creation expeditions, trying to convince the rich seth to invest in his dream project. Could this project be making a film? Looks like it. And Joy Mukherjee has a companion who is doing the dance steps.

Just try to recognize this lean and thin fellow with sharp features. Actually, without his customary beard, it is difficult to place him. Atul ji helped me identify this actor. It is MacMohan, the tiny vicious member of many a gangster films. MacMohan is doing a veritable stripping act, and the seth is having illusions that he sees a beautiful girl instead.

The scenario is interesting, but of greater interest is the song. Penned by Rajendra Krishan, the lyrics are a lover’s proclamation of his love and praise for her beauty and adaa. The music composition is by Usha Khanna. The more I attempt to dig up about this composer, I keep finding gems spread across multiple movies, especially from the 60s. This particular song was requested in the Reader’s Farmiash section of this blog.

And such a wonderful rendition by Rafi Saab. Enjoy this veritable gem of a song. 🙂

ye ruki ruki ruki si aahen teri
dil ka raaz keh gayeen
tujh ko pyaar hai kahin
ab ye baat chhup sakegi kaise teri
haay
ye jhuki jhuki jhuki nigahen teri
ye ruki ruki ruki si aahen teri
dil ka raaz keh gayeen
tujh ko pyaar hai kahin
ab ye baat chhup sakegi kaise teri

ye jhuki jhuki jhuki nigahen
waah waah

mastiyon mein doobi mast mast teri adaa
har adaa mein jhoomta hua sa ik nashaa
mastiyon mein doobi mast mast teri adaa
har adaa mein jhoomta hua sa ik nashaa
hai raaz kyaa
samajh liyaa

ye jhuki jhuki jhuki nigahen teri
ye ruki ruki ruki si aahen teri
dil ka raaz keh gayeen
tujh ko pyaar hai kahin
ab ye baat chhup sakegi kaise teri

ye jhuki jhuki jhuki nigahen

ye teri saadgi ye baankpan ki shokhiyaan
munh chhupaa nahin to gir padegaa aasmaan
ye teri saadgi ye baankpan ki shokhiyaan
munh chhupaa nahin to gir padegaa aasmaan
hai jhootth kyaa
khudaa gawaah

Another wonderful song! Thanks, Sudhir and Atul! By the way, you can also see a young Sanjeev Kumar in the background – he was still acting as the sidekick at that time.

Lalitha ji,

Yes, indeed, thanks for the identification. Some of the well known names in later years i.e. 70s and 80s, started off in small bit roles in the movies, and then went on to make a sucessful career. We see two examples in this clip itself, MacMohan and Sanjeev Kumar.

Good to hear from you again. 🙂

All,

We have missed identifying the imaginary lady dancer that magically appears in the song, as an illusion in the mind of the seth. Please help to identify this actress.

Is she not Kumkum ?

The lady dancer appears to be Madhavi.

If I remember correctly, she married Producer-Director Bhappi Soni. She was also a supporting actress in AMRAPALI (1964) and perhaps some more movies.

Like

She is Tina Misquitta (After Marriage she was known Tina Katkar) , she was back dancer in many movies..

She is also mother of actress Kimi Katkar.

Sir,
she is not MADHAVI,
I remember Madhavi`s face exactly in “Amrapali” as vyjayanthi mala`s sakhi (she is there in the song picturisation of “Neel Gagan ke chhaon mein, din rain gale se”)
and as Rajendranath`s lady love in Bappi sonie`s “Jaanwar”(she is there in the song picturisation of Shammiji`s “Tumse Achcha kaun hai, dil lo jigar lo jaan lo”)
other movies in which Madhavi acted are

Pagla kahin ka, Brahmachari,Neela Akaash, Juaari(shashikapoor`s)

The lady dancer in “Aao Pyaar Karein”, is there in many dance sequences of old hindi movies of late sixties,as one of the main dancers dancing alongwith the heroines, I can identify her face, but I don`t know her name.
May be her identification is there in “Memsaab story” blog (under Artist identification Gallery).

but a small question to all of us knowledgebles–
wasn’t Sanjeev Kumar already there in the Dilip Kumar starrer “Sunghursh” before this?

Like

Hi Peevesie’s Mom,

Just checking in case there is a mix up in dates. The ‘Sunghursh’ film you refer to, the Dilip Kumar starrer, is a 1968 release, whereas this film, “Aao Pyaar Karen” is a 1964 release.
