Alphabetical list of actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice- Part XVI
(Actresses whose name begin with the letter R)
In the first fourteen episodes of the series, we listed actresses whose names begin with the first fifteen letters of the alphabet (A to P) and who had lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. There were no actresses whose names begin with O, so there were no acresses with the letter O who lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice and so we moved on the the letter P.
In this episode we should have taken up the next letter Q, but Q, like O does not offer us any actressses. So, like in the previous episode of this series, here too we give the designated leter a pass and move over to the next letter viz R. Like how we have done so far, we will list actresses whose names begin with R and who have lipp synced in Asha Bhosle’s voice in the blog. Then we will cover an actress lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice for the first time in the blog.
The “new” actresses who made their debuts in the blog (as far as lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is concerned) in the earlier posts of this series were Anju Mahendru, Bhanupriya,Chandrakala,Divya Bharati, Ekta,Farheen,Gulnar Irani,Harsha Mehra,Isha Koppikar,Jasmine,Khushboo, Laila,Madhavi, Namita Chandra and Pratibha Sinha.
In this episode, the sixteeth episode we arrive at the eighteenth letter of the alphabet, viz R. I counted as many as 25 actresses whose names begin with R and who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. The list includes some famous names as we will as some names that could cause Same Name confusion. Then there are actresses who will cause little confusion because few people may have heard of them.
Here are the details of these R actressses in the format that we have set up for this series:-

We can observe that famous actresses viz Raakhi, Rekha, Reena Roy, Rajeeta, Raagini etc have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is several songs. Then there are Rajshree and Rajshree (south), two actresses causing same name confusion, also lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Then there are actresses that are all but forgotten by now viz. Rinku Jaiswal, Reshma,Ritu Kamal, Roshan Kumari, Rani etc who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. The seniormost actress who lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog was Rehana. Ritu Shivpuri is on the other end of the spectrum who lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice nearly half a century after Rehana. What langevity on the part of Asha Bhonsle !
As far as introducing a “new” actress in this post is concerned, I had three choices as suggested by Prakashchandra. The first choice was the won that I finally selected, because the next two choices turned out to be not upto the mark songwise as well as picturisation wise.
The song that I have chosen is from “Samundar”(1986). “Samundar”(1986) was produced by Mushir Riaz and directed by Rahul Rawail for M R Productions private Limited, Bombay. This movie had Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon, anupam Kher, Amrish Puri, Roshni, Paresh Rawal etc in it.
“Samundar”(1986) had five songs in it. One song has been covered in the blog.
Here is the song under discussion. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is the only song sung by Asha Bhonsle in the movie. This song is picturised as a club dance song on Roshni. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
When I heard this song for the first time, I was not much impressed. Subsequently, when I heard this song a few times, the song grew on me and now I find it a superb song to listen to. In fact, listening to the audio of the song (which is longer than the video version) is a wonderful experience for a music lover. Music of the song appears to be created “dil se” by R D Burman. Unfortunately, this song failed to get popular. In fact, none of the songs of this movie became popular. I had never heard any songs of the movie during its time. I in fact was not even aware of this movie in 1986.
Roshni, who lip sycs this song, went by the name of Rashmi Chauhan in her earlier movie “Aaj Ki Aawaaz”(1984) where she played Raj Babbar’s sister. Then she was “reintroduced” as Roshni in “Jeene Nahin Doonga”(1996). “Samundar”, Daku Haseena(1987), Tera Karam Mera Dharam(1987), Dariya Dil (1988) were the other movies where she appeared as Roshni before fading away into oblivion. It is reported online that she married directed Kawal Sharma and then separated from him. I request our knowledgeable readers to provide more details about her.
With the letter R done and dusted, we will explore the next letter S in the next episode of this series. This letter S is the most prolific letter of the alphabet. I have counted as many as 45 actresses whose names beging with S and who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. There could be a few more names that I may have forgotten to consider.
For now, here is this song from “Samundar”(1986) that adds the name of Roshni (aka Rashmi Chauhan) to the list of R actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.

I was very surprised to see the R list right on the heels of the P list. As usual it had many new names for me like Ranjana Kadam, Ranjana Shukla and Ritu Kamal. Seeing to Ranjana on the list, I thought maybe there is a Marathi song featured on the Marathi actress Ranjana, V. Shantaram’s niece. It seems though that she has acted only in two Hindi films, both directed by V. Shantaram and both movies had no songs sung by Asha Bhosle. The actress featured today, Roshni, is also new to me, although the song was not new for me. I remembering listening to it and the „ae sagar ki lehron“ when the Samundar (1986) was released. The song didn’t leave a lasting impression though.
I noticed that few actresses are missing on your list, who feature already on the blog. The actresses are:
Rama Prabha: muthukodi kavadi haddaa from Do Phool (1973)
Raveena Tandon: gungunaati hai geet gaati hai zindagi (background song) from Satta (2003)
Rishi Kapoor: Bombay se Baroda tak from Rafoo Chakkar (1975)
Rita Rani Kaul: bas ek nazar ke jaan from Jeeva (1986)
Rojaramani: kaun si hai vo cheez jo from Jaise Ko Taisa (1973)
Actresses, who have moved their lips to Asha Bhosle songs and are on my list and not featured as yet on the blog are:
Rajani Bala: matwali raftar qayamat from Mera Desh Mera Dharam (1973)
Rajni Sharma: dulhe raja aayenge saheli ko le jaayenge from Prem Geet [1981]
Rashmi Desai: tum paas ho jab mere from Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke (2005)
Rubina Khan: jhar jhar behtaa hai from Ek Main Aur Ek Tu (1986)
Now I am very much looking forward to the S list.

Atul ji,
There was another Ranjana (Shukla) for whom Asha Bhosle has sung in ‘Deep Jalta Rahe’ (1959):
