Dil mein pyaar ka toofaan na samjhe koi naadaan

Posted on: August 30, 2011

“Yahudi” (1958) is a Hindi movie based on an alien story. And the way that the foreign tale has been told Indian style is interesting.

It is a Greco Roman story, but you cannot tell it from its songs and dance. in any case ,most Indian movie watchers have no idea about the songs and dance of that era. So they have rather used Arabian tales styles songs and dance in this movie, and that has been considered good enough.

Here is a song and dance from ‘Yahudi” (1958). The song is being watched by many people, and out of them I can recornise Dilip Kumar donning what is supposed be a Royal dress donned by a prince of those days.

The song is sung by Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan is the music director.

The dance is performed by a lead dancer and several others. The lead dancer, performing the Arabian style dance steps is Kamla Laxman, who was a classical dancer trained in Bharatnatyam. How a classical dancer of Bhratanatyam danced this Arabian style non classical dance is a mystery that will remain unresolved. To take a cricket analogy, it is like Chris Tavare batting in T20 power play overs. But to her credit, Kamla Laxman does a great job in this dance, so who knows, Chris Tavare could well have surprised us had he played T20 cricket.

On the occasion of Shailendra’s birthday (30th of August) here is this lovely song from “Yahudi” (1958). enjoy !

Lyrics

ho dil mein pyaar ka toofaan
naa samjhe koi naadaan
dil mein pyaar ka toofaan
naa samjhe koi naadaan
zaalim ghoor-ghoor ke
dekhe door-door se
dil mein pyaar ka toofaan
naa samjhe koi naadaan
dil mein pyaar ka toofaan
naa samjhe koi naadaan
zaalim ghoor-ghoor ke
dekhe door-door se
dil mein pyaar ka toofaan

jiske liye main saari raat jagi
usne hi dekho meri khabar na li
jiske liye main saari raat jagi
usne hi dekho meri khabar na li
mausam chhede meethe raag
mere dil mein jaage aag
mausam chhede meethe raag
mere dil mein jaage aag
zaalim ghoor-ghoor ke
dekhe door-door se
dil mein pyaar ka toofaan

ye berukhi na duaa na salaam
mujhko wafaa kaa milaa ye inaam
ye berukhi na duaa na salaam
mujhko wafaa kaa milaa ye inaam
waadaa karnaa thaa aasaan
jaa dekhaa teraa imaan
waadaa karnaa thaa aasaan
jaa dekhaa teraa imaan
kaahe ghoor-ghoor ke
dekhe door-door se

Thanks a lot for this fantastic information. So she was married to R K Laxman at one time. I wonder why they were divorced. Perhaps he decided that a celebrity as his wife was not a good idea..

Nigar sultan, Nazir Hussain, Indira Billi were also there in the picturisation of the song.

And at the end of the song, one lady with Dupatta on her head exchanges glances with another ordinary SAINIK, that lady is famous heroine KIMMI KATKAR`S mother, who used to be a junior artiste in Hindi movies, she was known as Mrs.Katkar.

Atul ji,

On 3rd July, earlier this year, you have posted a song, ‘Ye Pyaar Bharaa Dil Hai Mohabbat Ka Khazaanaa’ from the film ‘Yahudi Ki Beti’ (1956). In the write up for this song, I have provided a synopsis of the story of ‘Yahudi Ki Ladki’ the orignal stage play by the famous author Agha Hashr Kasmiri. This play has been adapted for Hindi screen, no less than 4 times, and more if we include variations.
The write up also includes a brief bio sketch of Agha Hashr Kashmiri.

Hi,
I am heading towards 80 but a staunch melody fan.
This song tune is from an early Amirbai Karnatki Kannada song- the words are” Priya madhuvanadali…”.Unfortunately, the original is not readily traceable; a copy by a lesser singing voice can be found on the internet .Instead of attributing the tune to SJ, for posterity the original MD should be traced and mentioned.
