Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jab mera aanchal dhallega

Posted on: September 27, 2011

“Picnic” (1966) is a movie which is produced by Filmistan. It is directed by Shahid Lateef. If imdb is to be believed then the major stars of this movie are David Abraham, Anand Bakshi and P Kailash.

For a movie produced by a banner like Filmistan, sufficient details should be available, but sadly that is not the case. The only details that I have been able to cull from various sources is that this movie had Manoj Kumar, Kalpana,P Kailash,Shubha Khote, Murad, David etc. And when it comes to the song under discussion, I was not even aware about the actors on whom this song is picturised. What do I do ?

When I checked up, I found that I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie in the past ! And I had forgotten all about that ! On going through those write ups, I could not get any wiser. According to my write ups, Shubha Khote is the leading lady of this movie and she appears in two out of the four songs discussed by me earlier, including one duet with Manoj Kumar. then who is this other lady who appears nearly as prominently in the songs of this movie ? According to sources like imdb etc, there is another lady called Kalpana in this movie. But this lady hardly resembes the Kalpana of “Professor” (1962). Could this be another lady called Kalpana ?

I am really confused and finding out the identity of the lady has consumed considerable time in which I could have posted several songs by now. So I have decided to simply post this song and let my knowledgeable readers tell us about the identity of the actors.

So, here is this club/party song, where this unknown lady, who is close to Manoj Kumar, has got annoyed with Manoj Kumar and has decided to make him jealous by flirting with another man in full view of Manoj Kumar and others. In this song, this lady, as well as the unknown man sing this duet. In the song, the lady really provokes Manoj Kumar quite blatantly by mocking him. Just sample the lyrics-

“jhoome ja nashe mein
jalne waalla jallega”
Dance away in abandon
let the fellow feel envious

“dhar le meri baahen
kya karegaa koyi”
Hold my arms,
who dare stop us from doing that

One must say that the lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri can really provoke its target audience with jealousy and anger. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi in a tone that is meant to mock Manoj Kumar. No wonder Manoj Kumar seethes in anger and finally when he can take it no longer, he walks out in a huff.

The song is composed brilliantly by S Mohinder . But then S Mohinder was an underutilised music director of great talent, as I have mentioned several times.

Here is this great song from “Picnic” (1966). enjoy it, and while you are enjoying it, please identify the actors on whom this song is picturised. I am dying to find out about their identity.

PS-The identities of the dancing duo can now be ascentained with certaincy. The lady is Azra and the male actor is Sohan Kapila.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Song-Jab mera aanchal dhallegaa (Picnic)(1966) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S Mohinder

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

Jab meraa aanchal dhallega
saanp dilon par challega
mil ke maze mein
jhoome ja nashe mein
jalne waalla jallega
arre dil se jab dil millega
duniya ko to khallega
chaahe koyi tadpe
chaahe koyi bhadke
ulfat mein sab challega

jab meraa aanchal dhallega
aah haan
oh hooo

thhandi thhandi aahen
to bharegaa koyi

dhar le meri baahen
kya karegaa koyi
haay
thhandi thhandi aahen
to bharegaa koyi

haay
dhar le meri baahen
kya karegaa koyi
door hi door se
haath mallega

waah
jab meraa aanchal dhallega
saanp dilon par challega
mil ke maze mein
jhoome ja nashe mein
jalne waalla jallega
dil se jab dil millega
aah haa

hey hey

phir bhi zaraa mil ke
lehraana to hoga
pyaar jawaan ho ke
deewaana to hoga

phir bhi zaraa mil ke
lehraana to hoga
pyaar jawaan ho ke
deewaana to hoga

ye zameen aasmaan
aaj hillega
waah waah
dil se jab dil millega
duniya ko to khallega
chaahe koyi tadpe
chaahe koyi bhadke
ulfat mein sab challega

jab meraa aanchal dhallega
re re
re re

seekhe koyi tum se
nishaana lagaanaa

dekho ho ke ghaayal
tadpe hai zamaanaa
haay haay
seekhe koyi tum se
nishaana lagaanaa

oy hoy
dekho ho ke ghaayal
tadpe hai zamaanaa
phir to jee koyi gul
aaj khillegaa

re
jab meraa aanchal dhallega
saanp dilon par challega
mil ke maze mein
jhoome ja nashe mein
jalne waalla jallega
dil se jab dil millega
duniya ko to khallega
chaahe koyi tadpe
chaahe koyi bhadke
ulfat mein sab challega

jab meraa aanchal dhallega
aah haa
aah haaa

Thanks for the identification. Just imagine, her name is not there in the details contained in various sites. Who is the man dancing with her ?

I have seen her in Bahaaron ke sapne(rajesh khanna starrer) and Ganga Jamuna(Dilip kumar starrer)

Now i also recognise her, who was Dilip Kumar Brother’s Girlfriend in Gunga Jamuna and in Mother India, Sunil Dutt kidnaps her from her marriage mandap, provoking Nargis to kill him.

Mother India mein Sunil dutt “Chanchal”(In the movie she is Kanhaiyyalal`s daughter and in real life she is Madhubala`s sister) ko kidnap karthe hain na???
Jis se Nargisji bhadhak ke sunilji ko maar dalthe hain na???

Mother India dekhe bina bahut saal ho gaya hai,
If I am wrong Please excuse me and correct me.

The lady sitting at the table with Manoj Kumar is Shobha Khote(Durga Khote’s daughter), later joined by David. Another song is featuring the same crowd of both dancing singers, with Manoj Kumar & David watching. I thought it will be puzzle to solve about the song “Kitna Rangeen hai chaand sitaaron ka samaan” (Sadhana & Guru Dutt).

With due respects to you,
Shobha Khote is not Durga Khote`s daughter, I am 75% sure about this.
Please check the correctness of this fact.

I also think that Shubha Khote is not related to Durga Khote. But Shubha Khote’s brother and daughter are actors.

She is not ? Why did i think it was ? I have thought so always, since i saw her in Anaadi, with Nutan.

Shubha Khote is the daughter of Nandu Khote who was the brother of Durga Khote.

i was going to say that Shubha Khote and Viju Khote (siblings) are niece and nephew of Durga Khote

Atul ji,

Picnic (1966) is a production under the banner of Filmistan, Bombay, directed by Shahid Lateef. The star line up, in order of appearance in the film credits is Manoj Kumar, Kalpana, Azra, Shobha Khote, P Kailash, Murad, Badri Prasad, Bazid Khan, Razia Sultana, Lata Sinha, Satya Rani, Rooplakshmi, Jeevan Kala, Sarfraz Bari, Munshi Khanjar, Jabbar Khan, Anand Khatri, Madhav Pawar, Raj Kumar Saxena, Akash Kumar, and David. Guest appearances are by Sohan Kapila, and yes, Anand Bakshi.

Now, the lady in this song is definitely Azra, as has been indicated by other listeners also. But still there is no definitive identification for the gentleman dancing with her. It could be any of the other male names, including Sohan Kapila, but I have not yet been able to track down any photograph to match.

The film is a social comedy, that is a spoof on modern day romances (what the folks in 1960s would consider modern 🙂 ). Manoj Kumar and Shobha Khote are in love with each other. . . all because of a century that Manoj Kumar scores in an inter college cricket match. (Yes, Atul ji, the first scene in the film is this match 🙂 ). Their parents are against this match, and eventually both are pressurized to get married to the partner selected by the parents. Both of them resolve to make their marriages impossible for their partners, to take revenge on their parents. But with all the dilemmas in place, their plans do not work well. The first one to break is Shobha Khote, who comes to her senses and gets back into the family fold with her army man husband. All it takes in her case is that she falls critically ill, and her husband tirelessly takes care of her and nurses her back to good health. Manoj Kumar takes much longer, to the extent that his wife (Azra) has to do a couple of duets in the club to enrage him and fire his envy. The entire story line is flavored with some very interesting and hilarious episodes, with David, playing the role of Manoj Kumar’s mamma ji (uncle), is the string puller in the background for some of the episodes to bring the two original love birds to their senses. Of course some of the sequences are not very logical, but well, it is a comedy, trying to bring home a message also.

The lyrics for this film are by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and Firdaus. A little digging uncovers that Firdaus is the name of Majrooh Saab’s wife. But incidentally, none of the original records for this film carry her name as the lyricist. There is one record which does not specifically carry the lyricist name, however,as per comments in the Geet Kosh, Majrooh Saab has stated that even that particular song is written by him.

S Mohinder’s foot tapping music is great, and all the seven songs, including a Lata semi classical piece titled “Baalamwa, bolo na, bolo na, bolo na”, are very hummable.

All in all, an entertaining fare one can afford to spend time on.

Thanks a lot for this detailed explanation on this movie. The man dancing with Azra could be P Kailash perhaps ? It is not that I know abything about P Kailash, but going by the cast, his name figures high enough in hierarchy.

So this movie has only seven songs in it ? That makes it only two more songs to go.

Atul ji,

In my opinion, it may not be P Kailash, because we have meatier role for the person who marries Shobha Khote in the film. I am inclined to think that P Kailash is Shobha Khote’s husband, the plumpish person sitting with her on a different table. The dancer could well be the guest artist Sohan Kapila, but once again, no confirmation as yet.

Atul ji,

Based on Zoher Gheewaalaa ji’s identification of the male actor in the song “Payaam-e-Ishq-o-Mohabbat Hamein Pasand Nahin”, the male actor dancing with Azra is Sohan Kapila, as I had speculated earlier.
