Mohabbat karo to karo chhup chhupaa ke

Posted on: October 25, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In this post I present a qawwaali written by Sahir Saab. In the string of qawwaalis, I had some time back posted the iconic qawwaali from the film Kaala Samunder (1962), with the mukhdaa (title) “Meri Tasweer Le Kar Kyaa Karogey Tum” . There is one more qawwaali from the same film, not as well known, and is somewhat rare and obscure. But then, bless this YouTube that I am able to trace this qawwaali finally.

The film Kaala Samunder 1962 is a production under the banner of Deepak Chitra, and is directed by Ram Prakash ‘Ashq’. The leading star cast is Jairaj, Chitra, Radhika, Maruti, TunTun, Beer Sakhuja, Hiralal, Harooon, Shafi, Raja Gaurang etc. This film has lyrics written by Anand Bakshi, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Ram Prakash ‘Ashq’. This qawwaali is from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, and is only one song that has been written by him for this film. The music is by N Datta (also known Dattaa Naaik). The singing voices are those of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Once again, only the audio clip is available, and so it is not feasible to comment on the on screen picturization of this song.

This qawwaali is once again a teasing exchange between two sets of singers. There is the male group led by Rafi Saab’s voice, that is advocating to stay away from the infamous thing called love. And the riposte is from the female group led by Asha ji’s voice, thumbing their nose at this silly thought and saying that love is what this world is made of. I am sure that the loser in this contest is the group that is denigrating love. 🙂

mohabbat karo to karo chhup chupaa ke
na chhedo ye nagmaa kisi ko sunaa ke

If you are in love, make sure to keep it concealed
Do not let this song of your heart to be heard by others

kadam yoon dharo koi ghungroo na chhanke
galey yoon lago koi choodi na khanke
utthaa dengey toofaan ye bande khudaa ke

Don’t let your anklets clink as you walk
Don’t let your bangles chime, when in embrace with your beloved
Else the keepers of society’s conscience will raise a storm

jalen jalne waale hamaari balaa se
chalengey latak se hansengey adaa se
jo karna hai ka lein ye bande khudaa ke

Let them be jealous, who envy us, we don’t care
The gait will swagger, and we will smile with style
Let the keepers of society’s conscience, do what is in their power

mohabbat buree shai hai apne watan mein
ke hum sab se aage hain nafrat ke fun mein
mohabbat ko milte hain tohfe sazaa ke

Love is infamous in this land
And hatred is an art with the people
Love has always been presented the gift of punishments

mohabbat ke dum se ye duniya haseen hai
mohabbat nahin hai to kuchh bhi nahin hai
kahengey ye duniya se nazren milaa ke

Love is what makes this world beautiful
Without love, this creation would not exist
I will look into the eyes of this world and say it

buzurgon ke kehnaa hai chaahat buree hai
haqeeqat hai ye un ki haalat buree hai

The elders advise that love is an unpleasant thing
Well, the truth is that their (the elders’) condition is unpleasant

woh kehte hain hansne ki aadat buree hai
wo rotey rahen un ki qismat buree hai

Their counsel is that laughter is objectionable and distasteful
Well, let them weep and snivel, for their destiny is troubled and adverse

yahaan dillagi aur sharaarat buree hai
jo socho to jhootthi sharaafat buree hai
koi kab tak fitrat ko rakhey dabaa ke

Naughtiness and light hearted emotions are detested here
Think of it – it is the false honour and the bogus decency that is to be detested
O for how long can one suppress the nature and its creations
(NOTE: ‘fitrat’ = nature, natural feelings, natural compulsions)

Sudhir,
I am hearing this quawaali for the first time though I had listened to ‘Meri tasweer le kar kyaa karogey’ many times over radio. I am not a great fan of quawaali songs except for some iconic ones. But being a fan of Sahir Ludhianvi, I have to go through the song and lyrics.

I must admire your perseverance of writing on some of the qawaalis, filmy and non-filmy ghazals. I know from my very short experience of providing lyrics for a few songs how hard it is and in respect of quawaalis, the hardship multiplies as lyrics are lengthy requiring to keep track of ‘who sings what verses’ with chorus thrown in between. In addition, you have also been providing the explanation of the verses in great details for the mortals like me who have not much knowledge of Urdu. But as one sage had said, for some, the life of hardship is the source of pleasures and heavenly bliss.

My salutations to you, Atul, Arun, Prakash, Nahm and other readers who have been doing a yeoman’s service for fans of Hindi films songs of bygone eras.

Happy Diwali to all the readers.

Sudhir ji,
I totally agree with what Sadanand ji has said about your writing prowess.
I wonder sometimes how you can write on Saigal or P.Mullick and qawalis with the same ease .One needs not only the art of writing but also interest in various forms of music indeed. You seem to have both in abundance.
you are truely doing an yeoman’s service to us mortals in understanding and enjoying the various types of music.
Thanks.
KALA SAMUNDAR-1962 was a film by Deepak Chitra and Directed by none other than the Lyricist Ram Prakash ‘Ashk’,who also wrote some lyrics in this film, along with Anand Bakshi and Sahir L.
This was a story of a gang of International smugglers called ‘kala samunder’,who always managed to escape whenever there is a police raid.Surendra(Jairaj) and his asst.Chhagan(Maruti) are after them all the time .Laali(Chitra) is helping them as she loves Surendra. She is caught by the gang and Surendra rescues her from an attempt to kill her. Finally the leader of the gang is exposed and he is none other than Lali’s father(Hiralal).
It was a tame story with the expected scenes etc etc.
