Roka kai baar maine dil ki umang ko

Posted on: November 8, 2011

“Mere Sanam” (1965) was a Sippy Films Production. G P Sippy was the producer of this movie and Amar Kumar directed the movie. Star cast of this movie included names like Biswajeet, Asha Parekh, Nazir Hussain, Achala Sachdev, Asit Sen, Pran, Mumtaz, Rajendranath, Dev Kishan, Laxmi Chhaaya etc.

Music of this movie was its strong suit, as was normal those days. I have discussed as many as six songs from this movie, and all these songs had lilting music in them. I have by no means run out of songs from this movie to discuss. Here is another superb song from this movie.

This song is a duet sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. This song is picturised on Biswajeet and Asha Parekh. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

This is one of the “lesser” known songs from this movie as far as I am concerned. In fact I became aware of this song only when its lyrics were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Prakashchandra, as is his wont also mentioned that the picturisation of this movie did not contain the entire song and it had one stanza less. Indeed, true music lovers like him want to savour a song in its full. So I have provided the video version as well as the full audio of the song.

What a superb song it is. I enjoyed listening to it when I heard it for the first time. I am sure readers of this blog will also enjoy listening to this nice song from “Mere Sanam” (1965).

O o o
o o aa haa
o o o o o aa haa
o o o aahaa

rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
o o o
aa aa
rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
ho o o
aaa aaa

dekho meri aankhein
tumhaara hi khumaar hai
hothon ki ye laali
sanam teraa pyaar hai
dekho meri aankhein
tumhaara hi khumaar hai
hothon ki ye laali
sanam teraa pyaar hai
dil ko lagaayaa
mujhe to ikraar hai

rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
ho o o
aaa aaa

maanaa tera aanchal
haathon se abhi door hai
baahon mein uthaa loon
ye armaan zaroor hai
maanaa tera aanchal
haathon se abhi door hai
baahon mein uthaa loon
ye armaan zaroor hai
maano na maano
deewaanaa be-qasoor hai
rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
ho o o
aa aa aa

dekhi teri soorat
jo itne kareeb se
ghir gayee main to
khayaalon mein ajeeb se
dekhi teri soorat
jo itne kareeb se
ghir gayee main to
khayaalon mein ajeeb se
dil pe kyaa beeti
na poochho ye gareeb se

rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
ho o o
aa aa aa
rokaa kayee baar maine
dil ki umang ko
kyaa karoon main apni
nigaahon ki pasand ko
o jaane-jaan
tu hi mere pyaar ka jahaan hai
ho o o
aa aa aa

Hi Atul,
Love your site, its great with the write-ups!
I have authored five books and am currently working on my 6th book. The book I am working on is a book on O.P.Nayyar and I was so impressed with your knowledge and style of expression that I wanted to invite you to be one of the 12 writers who are writing about the composer in the book. You could choose your perspective of OPN, or I could guide you with a few topics. Do let me know. You may email me either ways, it will be nice to stay in touch with such a wonderful music-lover!

I and other contributors of this blog write on topics of our choices on our own volition. I devote unimaginable amount of time on this blog. I do not think I have any spare time left to devote for writing an article for a book. In fact I am already neglecting my original blog because that requires writing long articles and I cannot spare time for that.

This blog is a labour of love for me and other likeminded contributors. We try to give our best because we feel under no pressure to perform or achieve deadlines or meet certain standards etc. In other words, we are free birds and we do not have to report to anyone. And I would like to keep it that way. I am honoured to know that you consider me worthy of being one of the authors of your book, but as I mentioned above, I do not think I can spare any more time than what I already devote on this labour of love as of now. So I would rather write my articles here instead of trying to write an article for a book and neglecting this blog in the process.

Hats off Sir. Most people in your place would have jumped at this chance of writing for a book, and look at your dedication.

What I really like about what you wrote is the mention of the pressures of deadlines et al. It is so true is it not? When under pressure, our productivity actually takes a hit. The IT industry would be a better place (in fact other work places too) if they worked more with passion than deadlines :).

One needs to be self motivated and passionate and under no pressure of externally imposed deadlines. One has to have internally set targets of course.

The above combination yields the best productivity (within the constraints of the person’s ability).
