Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno

Posted on: November 12, 2011

I became aware of this song accidentally while I was searching the details of another song of this movie. My search led me to this article on songs of Mayur Pankh (1954) by Richard S.

A little more digging up reveals that I may have inadvertently stumbled upon a movie that is a trivia buff’s delight.

This movie is Sahu Production movie. Kishore Sahu plays the hero and in this movie his love interest is not a desi female but a videshi one. 🙂 His love interest is a Gori called Odette Ferguson. She may be firang, but this is a Hindi movie, so the romance progresses along musical lines in this movie. No, she does not sing romantic duets with Kishore Sahu, but she is shown attending songs and dances performed by desi performers, while their romance blossoms.

I have earlier discussed a mujra song from this movie which was sung by two of the four famous Mangeshkar sisters and it was appropriately picturised on two of the three famous Vajifdar dancing sisters.

This brings me to another interesting fact about the songs of this movie. In the song picturised on the Vajifdar sisters, Lata sings for one of them. But that is not the only actress who gets to sing in Lata’s voice in this movie. In this movie, Lata has given playback to as many as six different actresses in six different songs !

The song under discussion is a very special song. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on a very young 15 year old girl who is dressed demurely in salwar kurta with her dupatta covering her head and she is seen adjusting her dupatta every now and then. Take a close look at her. She is the one and only Helen. And no, she does not perform a cabarat on this song. In this picturisation , she plays a street performer who sings this song before Kishore Sahu and Odette Ferguson. The location is Tajmahal and in this song she is describing how the Tajmahal came into existence. “Listen to this tale of love” is how the lyrics of this song go, and the gori lady seems to be getting the meaning of the song without needing translation/ sub-titling. 🙂 She is shown feeling suitably love struck as the song progresses.

This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

This song is special for this blog as well as it the 300th song of Hasrat Jaipuri in the blog. With this he becomes the fifth lyricist and 12th artist overall to reach 300 songs mark in this blog.

So, here is this song, a very special song on many counts, for the listening and viewing pleasures of the music lovers.

Song-Muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno (Mayur Pankh)(1954) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
lo dil thaam lo
ai zameen aasmaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
lo dil thaam lo
ai zameen aasmaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno

wo shaahe muhabbat wo shaahejahaan
zamaane kaa dil taajdaare jahaan
wo shaahe muhabbat wo shaahejahaan
zamaane kaa dil taajdaare jahaan
ajab shaan thhi jiski ulfat bhari
ajab shaan thhi jiski ulfat bhari
use mil gayi pyaar ki ik pari
ishq hone lagaa husn pe meharbaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno

guzarne lagi chain se zindagi
wo mumtaaz ik roz kahne lagi
guzarne lagi chain se zindagi
wo mumtaaz ik roz kahne lagi
dhadakte dilon pe jawaani rahe
dhadakte dilon pe jawaani rahe
jahaan mein hamaari kahaani rahe
rakh do duniyaa mein apne pyaar kaa ik nishaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno

kahaa shahjahaan ne meri naazneen
tujhe doongaa tohfaa badaa dilnasheen
kahaa shahjahaan ne meri naazneen
tujhe doongaa tohfaa badaa dilnasheen
pasand usne Jamunaa kinaaraa kiyaa
pasand usne Jamunaa kinaaraa kiyaa
muhabbat kaa roshan sitaaraa kiyaa
is tarah Taaj kaa jagmagaayaa nishaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno

judaa hoke Mumtaaz raani gayi
rulaati huyi zindagaani gayi
judaa hoke Mumtaaz raani gayi
rulaati huyi zindagaani gayi
gayi baadshaahi na jaane kahaan
gayi baadshaahi na jaane kahaan
rahegaa amar Taaj hardam yahaan
khatm afsaanaa hai aansuon ki zubaan
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno
muhabbat ki daastaan aaj suno
ye muhabbat ki daastaan suno

I had heard this song many times in my younger days but never knew that it was picturised on a young Helen! It is indeed a special song.

I know of at least two other popular songs from this movie – ‘Tu kyon mujh ko pukaare’ sung by Lata and a folk dance song – ‘Tandaana tandaana tandaana tandaana mushkil hai pyar chupanaa’ also sung by Lata+Chorus. I am sure you are going to discussed these two songs as well in days to come 🙂
