O mere yaar o dildaar mere saath saath tera pyaar

Posted on: November 17, 2011

“Sikandar e Azam” (1965) is an N C Films production. It was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast of this movie had names like Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Prithviraj Kapoor, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Veena, Ganga, Jeewan, Jagdish Sethi, Tiwari etc.

This movie, which was about the adventures of Sikandar viz Alexander the great had some nice songs in it. The iconic patriotic song Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai baseraa is from this movie.

Here is a less known song from “Sikandar e Azam” (1965). The song is sung by Lata. Only the audio of this song is available, but it is my guess that the song is picturised on Mumtaz. I could be wrong in my guess though, and I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

Sikandar-e Azam-1965 became famous mainly dut to its song’Jahan daal daal par…’.
Historical films in India are usually distortical films,as they take undue cinematic liberties in the stories and spoil the essence of history.Still, some Historical events are such that despite all additions, deletions and distortions, they dont lose the attraction because they are very strong themselves. The story of World Conquerer Alexander or Sikandar is one such story.
Jhansi ki Rani or Sikandar,Rana Pratap or Shivaji are examples where inspite of poor prsentations, these films have their own lovers and audiences.
Sikandar e Azam was not spoiled by the producers but certainly some meaty subplots were added to make it more interesting. The story was written by Qamar Jalalabadi.
King Philips is killed by his Prime Minister to usurp the throne, but Sikandar kills him and becomes the King. The queen mother(Veena) has seen the dream of Alexander becoming conquerer of the world,so she takes a promise from Synthiya(Mumtaj) Sikandar’s lover, that she will not stop Sikandar(Dara Singh) from attacking India.Synthiya goes with sikandad disguised as a soldier.
Porus(Prithviraj Kapoor),the king of Jhelum valley appeals to other kings to unite and fight the invader. He sends his elder son Kirat(Premnath),on his wedding night to fight Sikandar’s army. His wife(Vijayalaxmi) is left alone(and she sings the above song).Kirat defeats one army of Sikander and Synthiya is captured.he treats her as sister and brings her to Porus.
Meanwhile,Sikander comes to Porus’ darbar disguised as courier.Porus recognises him but does not kill him as he is unarmed.
There is a final battle in which Porus is about to kill Sikandar but Synthiya saves him and due to the traitor,Ambhi Raj(Shyam Kumar) of Taxila,Porus is captured and brought to Sikandar’s court. The famous dialogue ‘treat me like a King would treat other king’ impresses Sikander. He frees Porus and returns to Persia.
There were some cinematic liberties taken, but it was an entertriner. The starcast was impressive. However, the film did not create any impact and but for its songs,it is not remembered anymore.
While Porus(P.Kapoor) was at ease,Dara singh as Sikander did not match him at all.

Indeed Hindi movie makers take too much of peotic license while creating Historical movies, or for that matter any kinds of movies.

Deshmukh Sir,

I have seen a movie on DD when they had a festival to commemorate Sohrab Modi. The movie had Prithvi Raj Kapoor playing Sikandar and Sohrab Modi was i think Porus. I thought that was “Sikandar-e-Azam”. Now I am confused. I dont know now if that was Pukaar or named Sikandar or even Alexendar.

Nahm ji,

The film you are referring to is titled “Sikander” and it was produced in 1941 by Sohrab Modi.

Yes, a very interesting observation from you. In 1941, Prithviraj Kapoor played the role of Sikander in this historical saga.

In this 1965 film “Sikander-e-Azam” on the same episode from history, he is now playing the role of Porus.

That is a very interesting trivia,

Arun ji, any other such case comes to mind? wherein the same actor is playing the same or a different role in the films made/remade more than once after a gap of some years.

One that I can immediately recall is the role of a wandering mendicant played by Wazir Mohammed Khan in all three versions of Alam Ara, in 1931, 1956 and 1973.

Another I can recall is the role of Emperor Akbar played by actor Mubarak in the film Tansen (1943) and also in the film Anaarkali (1953). Although in this case, the theme of the movies is not exactly same.

Nahm ji,
The film you saw was SIKANDAR-1941.
A Minerva Movietone film directed by Sohrab Modi and Music by Mir Sahib and Rafiq Gaznavi.
The star cast was Prithviraj kapoor as Sikandar,Sohrab Modi as Porus,Vanmala,Sheela,Meena,Shakir,Jilloo,Sadiq Ali etc.
IN film PUKAR-1939,the role of Sikandar was done by Chandramohan and Sohrab Mody was Porus.

Sudhir ji,
There are few such cases.
One is mehboob’s AURAT-1940,in which actor Kanhaiyalal had played the role of Sukhilala.
In Mehboob’s MOTHER INDIA-1957,Kanhaiyalal again played the same role of Sukhilala.
Another case is of film AMAR-1954,which was a remake of Prakash Pictures’ MALA-1941 in which JAYANT(father of ‘Gabbarsingh’ Amjad Khan) played the same role in both films.
Offhand I remembered only these 2 films, but there could be some more.By the way,for both Mala and Amar the Music Director was same-Naushad.

I might have to steal “distortical”! (with due credit of course) 😀

Thanks for the synopsis, it really helps me with unsubbed movies!

Sudhir Sir and Deshmukh Sir,

Thanks for the information. I distinctly remember Prithvi Raj Kapoor in the role of Sikandar in that movie. I was able to find a few songs of both Pukaar and Sikandar on Youtube. The songs of both these films and Aurat and Mala (If available) can be posted too.

Regards.
