Mere nayan paakhhi bechaare

Posted on: November 24, 2011

“Pinjre Ke Panchhi”(1966), despite being a movie of reasonably recent vintage (by the standards of this blog), is a movie that is by and large forgotten. This movie was a Shobhana Pictures presentation and it was directed by Salil Chaudhary. The movie had Mehmood, Balraj Sahni, Meena Kumari, Abhi Bhattacharya, Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee, Poonam, Viswas Kunte, R. Jhunjhunwala, Harin Chattopadhyaya etc in it.

Here is a nice song from this movie that I had never heard before. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Meena Kumari. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Mere nayan paakhi bechaare
mere nayan paakhi bechaare
mere nainaa bechaare
ae
tere liye chhatpat chhatpat
din rainaa
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bechaare
mere naina bechaare
ae ae
tere liye chhatpat chhatpat
din rainaa
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bechaare
ae ae ae

ahaa re
ae
naina sakhaa re
teri ek jhalki ko tarse re
ahaa re
ae
yaad mein teri nit
saawan bhadon barse re
aajaa ke ab bin tere
rahaa nahin jaaye
aajaa ke lag jaaye na
tujhe inkee haaye
tere liye chhatpat chhatpat
din raina
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bechaare
mere naina bechaare
tere liye chhatpat chhathat
din raina
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bechaare
ae ae

ahaa re
ae
bhool gayee in Akhiyon se Thaa
tumko pyaar

ahaaaare
ae
dekhein thhin inmein
tumne dono sansaar
aaj ye soone jaise bujhne pe deep
moti bikhar jaaye jaise
reh jaaye seep
tere liye chhatpat chhatpat
din rainaa
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bechaare
mere naina bechaare
tere liye chhatpat chhatpat
din rainaa
ye akulaaye
na ud paaye
nayan paakhi bichaare
mere nayan paakhi bechaare
ae ae ae

Atul ji,
PINJRE KE PANCHHI-1966 was probably the only Hindi film directed by Salil Chaudhari. He had also written its story and screenplay, besides composing the music.
Few people know that Salil Chaudhari was a very good writer and a communist worker to the core.He was very talented. He had made a Bengali film “Poriborton” in 1949,based on which, film Jagriti-1954 was made in Hindi in 1954.Similarly,his short story “Rikshawala” was made into a hit Bengali film of the same name and later “Do Bigha Zamin” was made in 1953,based on it and with this film Salilda entered Hindi Films first time as a Music Director.
Pinjre ke Panchhi was a film about love, cheating, crime, sacrifice and the selfish behaviour of people.
Sonu Sharma,a wealthy person(Abhi Bhattacharya),falls sick, admitted in hospital,he is nursed by Heena(Meena Kumari). They fall in love, marry secretly in a temple and he asks her to go to a nearby town where he has hired”Madhu villa”,and wait for him there.
Meanwhile,2 convicts Yaseen Khan(Balraj Sahni) and Laalu(Mehmood) escape from prison and come to Madhu villa.Finding it empty, they changs clothes and stay there. When Heena comes she thinks that Laalu is Sonu’s brother and Yaseen his Uncle. She stays with them waiting for her husband. She falls ill and these 2 convict, impressed with her simplicity and innocense, tend to her. When they came to know that Sonu has cheated her, they decide to help and solve her problem.
The story is all about how the convicts are converted to good humans and how they help Heena. There is a murder mystery also as a subplot.
Somehow this sort of film was not accepted by the public and soon it went out of everybody’s memory.
An interesting thing is the editing of the film was done by Hrishikesh mukherjee and few songs were written by Gulzar.

Arunji
Thanks for the information
atulji thanks for posting the song

I have seen a very bad print of this movie, 5 years ago on Zee cinema that too at late night slot.T.V.people telecasted this movie without any promos.
That`s the way the modern day movie telecasting structure functions, obscure (but movies with good story lines)movies were carelessly shown.
That too these days, these famous movie channels will never show vintage movies at prime time. Everyone is after popular, box office hit movies. No respect for the works done by thespians and legends.

I liked this movie very much, eventhough my enjoyment was hampered by the poor quality of the print of the movie.

Again thanks to the Bombay Doordarshan. Being from Bombay (now Mumbai) I was fortunate to watch so many hindi movies on Sundays. I was preteens then. Parents won’t allow to watch each and every movie, but whenever they say YES, I would watch each hindi movie. And guess what, this was one of them. That age, I was totally disappointed as Balraj Sahni was a CHOR in that movie. I had seen his movies as a good person before that. Again as I said I was may be 13 or 14 when I watched this movie, so could not understand the CHARACTER roll of an actor. Thanks Atulji, for posting this song, Prakashchandraji for the lyrics and Arunji for the details. Love listening to these old gems as now I can understand the value.
