Kis baat pe tuley ho

Posted on: December 23, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Hansraj Behl made his composing debut in Hindi films, in the year 1946. As per records, his first film released is ‘Pujaari’ (1946). In the same year, two more films were also released with music composed by him. these are ‘Phulwaari’ and ‘Gvaalan’. Rare films in their own rights, and very little is known about them. This delightful song is from the film ‘Gvaalan’, sung by Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa).

About the film, it is produced under the banner of Amar Pictures, and is directed by Baburao Patel. The music is composed by Hansraj Behl and the lyrics are by Pt. Indra. The star cast listing includes Sushila Rani, Trilok Kapoor, Bipin Gupta, Madhuri, Sheikh Hussain, Bikram Kapoor, David, Noorjehaan, Master Ratan, Shanta Kumari, Altaaf Hussain, Karan Singh, Nagendra, Pt. Iqbal, Yusuf etc.

An interesting fact about Zohrabai. As we see the names of lyricists and authors, a lot of them have the name of a place, as part of their pen name – Aarzoo Lucknawi (from Lucknow), Hasrat Jaipuri (from Jaipur), Majrooh Sultanpuri (from Sultanpur) and so on. No other category of artists associated with films have such names that include the name of a place. In the category of singers, two names come to mind, both from the decade of 40s. One is Amirbai Karnataki, and the second is Zohrabai Ambaalewaali. Regarding the latter, there is a specific reason that the name of her home town was added to her name. (She was born in the city of Ambala, formerly in the state of Punjab, now in the state of Haryana). In the 1920s / 30s / 40s, there is another very well known classical singer by the same name Zohrabai. This singer hailed from the city of Agra, belonged to the Agra Gharaana of classical musicians and was famous as Zohrabai Agra (or Zohrabai Agrewaali). She had started her musical career in the 1920s, whereas Zohrabai, the films singer came to be known only in the 1940s. However, to remove any situation of confusion on account of the first name, Zohrabai, the films singer adopted the name Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa). The other lady, Zohrabai Agrewaali, never did sing for the films.

This song is another exchange between lovers. The gentleman appears to be offended about something, and the lady is singing a song trying to appease him, and to catch his attention, asking him to look towards her; and that this life and this time of youth will not be forever. The music has a swift pace, and an endearing flavor to it. Enjoy.

kis baat pe tuley ho, rootthe ho meharbaan
dekho zaraa idhar bhi, jaltaa hai aashiaan

O my kind dear,
What has upset you?
Why are you so adamant? (in being offended)
Kindly, just glance my way also
My heart is troubled too (on seeing you upset)

tum ho qaraar dil ke, armaan zindagi ke
khwaab-o-bahaar aayee, aa jaaye na khizaan

You are the comfort of my heart
And the hope in this life
(With you) the life is a dream of spring
Pray that the autumn does never come this way
(on seeing you upset)

nazron se dil churaa ke, nazron se na giraa
rehti nahin kisi ki, zaalim jawaaniyaan

You have stolen my heart with your glances
Do not let me down in your eyes
The times of youth, they will not be forever
(o dear do not be upset)

le lo duaa’en dil ki, din hain yehi sanam
ye husn dar pe aa ke, jaaye kahaan kahaan

Take the blessings, the good wishes of my heart
These are the days (of our happiness and love)
Now that I am at your doorstep
Wherefore else can I now go
(please do not be upset)

roothhe ho meharbaan

armaan zindagi ke
armaan zindagi ke
khwaab-o-bahaar aayee
khwaab-o-bahaar aayee

jaltaa hai aashiaan
haan
jaltaa hai aashiaan

Sudhir ji,
GVAALAN-1946 was a film produced and directed by Baburao Patel, the fiery journalist and editor of FILM INDIA(est.1935-closed 1960).He had a strong desire to make his III wife Sushilarani a renowned singer actress, just like Noorjehan, but unfortunately, after 2 films, she failed miserably at the Box office, putting her husband in financial disaster and very wisely,he stopped his intrusion in Film making. He preferred writting about them in Film India, his popular film mag.
Susheelarani was a devoted singer and a good learner. She did her Ph.D. in music and also she became a Lawyer at the age of 65 years, topping in all subjects.
After the death of Baburao Patel, she shut the magazine MOTHER INDIA,which had replaced Film India in 1960 and devoted her time and life to music.
She got the Sangeet and Natak Academi award in 2002.
Dr.Susheelarani Patel is now 93 years, but evrey year,on the BirthAnniversary of husband Baburao Patel,4th April, she arranges a programme in Girnaar-her Pali Hill Bungalow in Mumbai,to encourage young singers and sings herself too.

Her last public appearance was on 20th October this year when she was honoured by Mumbai Citizens.
The othe film in which she had acted was DRAUPADI-1944. Both films were produced, directed and written by Baburao Patel.
