Kora kaaghaz thhaa ye man mera

Posted on: December 29, 2011

If one has to name one single movie of Rajesh Khanna as a definitive Rajesh Khanna movie, then it has to be “Aradhana” (1969). The kind of popularity that this movie and its music enjoyed was unprecedented, and that may not have been surpassed since then.

It was this movie that catapulted Rajesh Khanna to the exalted rank of the superstar of Hindi movies, that too within just two years after making his debut in Hindi movies. Such meteoric and such steep rise has not been seen in Hindi movies before as well as later. Rajesh Khanna has a charisma that is inborn which cannot be taught or transferred to others.

The music of “Aradhana” (1969) in many ways defined the course of Hindi movie music for the next one decade or so. Though S D Burman was the music director of this movie, he was ailing fr much of the time and the actual music composition for most of the songs was done by R D Burman.

R D Burman also composed racy songs in lots of other movies, starring Rajesh Khanna as well as others during that time. By 1968-69, the trio of R D Burman, Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna hit the industry like a tsunami and left the established order in disarray. Old order of music directors, singers and leading actors were blown away and in their places, we now had R D Burman as the undisputed number one music director, Kishore Kumar as the undisputed number one male playback singer, and Rajesh Khanna as the undisputed male superstar of the industry.

Today(29th december 2011), Rajesh Khanna is celebrating his 69th birthday. On this occasion, here is a song from “Aradhana” (1969). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

I am a huge fan of S D Burman duets. However much is the RDB influence on this film’s music, but this song and rafi-lata duet “gungunaa rahen hain bhanvre” had the signature of SDB. The third duet “Baagon mein bahaar hai” is may be little more of RDB style. Actually in the songs of film “Guide” there should have been at least one more duet apart from”gaata rahe mera dil”. Or were there more songs intended and not used as it was a lengthy film. Maybe someone would like to throw more light on this.

Very refreshing song. Sharmila ji had her own charm an paired well with Rajesh Khanna. I remember Amar Prem in which they had great chemistry between them.
