Main hoon apni lagan ka maaraa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Digging for songs by the so called second rung music directors is the same as wading through unheard and lost melodies from films that are now obscure, and even more rare than the songs themselves. One can just imagine – the time that these movies would have been created and released. Whatever the film, the team that creates it always has a motivation for enthusiasm – whether that motivation be money, or fame, or simply the love of the art. The team knows that it does not have the (so called) best of players or directors or writers or composers. And yet, I am sure, as the film is being created, as the songs get written, and as the music gets composed, there would be a keen eagerness in the minds of the team members, that they have a winner this time. The songs, the story line, the music, the acting, all seems very great to the folks who are doing those things. And the release and distribution is planned, posters are printed, and then displayed for generating public interest. The film comes to the cinema hall, some people do surely go and see it. If the star attraction is more, and the hype about the film is great, then a large, very large number of people will go and see it. And at times, the music is so catchy that it becomes the talk of the streets.

Then the year passes and comes the time for annual awards. With some honesty and with some manipulations, one film, one song, one singer, one composer etc. are honored. Some songs are popular, they get played frequently on the radio and social functions, and then make it to the competitive programs like Binaca Geet Mala.

Then many years pass. More and more music has been released. New generation of listeners joins the mix of public audience. And film buffs, historians and radio program announcers start to pick only the award winners and Geet Mala listings to choose songs for playing, from an ever increasing mix of melodies becoming available. And in this process, some very wonderful gems, that belong to films that did not last long on the cinema screens, or did not get nominated for awards, or the music did not make it to the Geet Mala and the likes – many a gems such as these get lost. Nobody is playing them, no one is requesting them, no one just cares because the music either did not belong to a hit film, a big name film, or the names associated with that music did not get to the stage at any awards function. The song remains in the minds of some people who either saw the film and were struck by the quality of music, or radio fans who spent time listening, they would get to hear even a rare occasion that an obscure song is played.

This song, is one such song. Browsing through the Geet Kosh, in the process to locate some other information, I ran across this listing, like less than an hour ago. The song identification created this ‘Wow’ feeling inside. And the YouTube search was positive. In some ways, the day is made.

What would you say about a film called ‘Diamond King’? Oh really? you would ask, there is a film by that name? Wow. And what do you write about such a film, a film for which very little information is readily available. A 1961 release from the banner of Chitra Bharati Ltd., Bombay. The Geet Kosh contains no information about the producer / director or the star cast. It is a bonus that the name of the music director is listed. A partial list of songs is available, and the name of lyricist is available for only one of the listed songs. But then you look at the list of songs, and the very first one hits you like a ton of bricks. Wo..ow – this song is from this film. And suddenly the melody starts to play in the mind, a melody that one has probably heard three or even four decades ago, as a very small child. But something about the lilt and the tone of composition embedded the song in the brain. Have not heard it for ages, it does not figure in any selections, it does not get short listed to be played on the radio any more. In other words, it is a lost song from a lost film that appeared many generations ago. Some aficionado having the same tastes, same memories, and one thing more – has an access to the original song itself. And the dear soul has gone ahead and posted the song online. The YouTube post lists a partial star cast – Kishore Kumar, Kum Kum, Maruti, BM Vyas, Anwar Husain, WM Khan.

The singing voice is that of Mukesh. The lyrics are by Kaif Irfani, and the music is by Bipin Dutta, who is one of the names in the music director duo Bipin-Baabul. Outside of this, I have not been able to locate any additional information. The voice, that is Mukesh, and the lead actor is Kishore Kumar. Is it possible? Or is the information listed with YouTube post erroneous? Once again, I request more knowledgeable readers to please add more information as to the film, its actors and this song.

A song coming from a free heart – a heart not encumbered by anything, a heart that is simply enjoying being itself and doing its own thing. Enjoy this lovely solo from Mukesh.

mein hoon apni lagan ka maaraa
jidhar chal padaa, chal padaa ho

I am creature of my own fancy
And I go, simply where I want to

main hoon apni hi dhun mein magan
main hoon pyaar ke mann ka gagan
koi kali to mein hoon chaman
koi geet to mein hoon iktaaraa

Absorbed in my own inclinations
I am the lofty sky of the mind of love
I am the garden to the young budding flower
And I am the string
That plays the melody to the song

main kya jaanoon ke kya hai jahaan
meri nazron mein chhalken armaan
mere dil mein khushi ke toofaan
koi lehar to main hoon kinaaraa

Carefree and unaware of the world
My yearnings reflect in my eyes
A tempest of happiness bubbles in my heart
And I am the shore
Giving shelter to the waves

liye nazron mein mann ki lagi
zaraa behkaa hoon mein jo kabhi
lagi kehne bahaaren sabhi
zaraa dekh idhar dobaaraa

With emotions of heart in my eyes
When I am wayward sometimes
The seasons of spring all beckon to me
Give us that glance yet once more

Sudhir jee,
DIAMOND KING -1961 indeed was a stunt movie, which was not released. It is not possible to get any info about this film on the internet,BUT- I have my notes, from which I can give you all the info that is needed.I actually must not have seen this film, but still I have the notes, possibly taken from some filmi paper or filmi mag or may be from somebody’s bio. There is no mention of the source, which normally is also noted by me.
Diamond king was a Chitra Bharati prodn. It was directed by K.Harish.The MD was Bipin Dutta and the Lyricists were Kaif Irfani and Noor Dewasi.
Story and s/play was by C.M.Trivedi and the dialogues were by Kabil Amritsari.

As per my info the star cast is NOT what is mentioned on You Tube. Before writing this post I once again checked Kishore’s filmography.Though there are other unreleased films mentioned, but there is no mention of Diamond king.Plus, reading the story of the film,it is unlikely that Kishore acted in such a film.
The star cast was Chitra,Rajan Kapoor, tiwari,Madhumati,Atavale,Niloufer Arvind kr.etc.
A group of Tourists in the jungle safari find a young boy who is friendly with the animals.Shekhar(Rajan Kapoor) takes a liking for him and takes him with him.His friend Bela(Chitra) also helps Shekhar. However the Captain (Tiwari)of the group is not happy with the boy.Shekhar and bela try to teach him things, suddenly they find a locket in his neck.Opening the locket they learn that the boy-Ashok-is the son of a rich Dimond Mine owner of South Africa. There is a map of location of the Diamond Mine. After learning this, the captain and his friend Sheela(Madhumati) also want the boy. They kidnap the boy to kill him to become owner of the Dimond mines.Shekhar rescues Ashok, but Captain has the locket.Shekhar follows captain, there is a fight and the map is torn, half with shekhar and captain.
Now Captain follows shekhar and kidnaps Bela.Ashok decides to surrender to save Bela.Ashok secretly informs everything to the Police, who follow the drama.Ashok is thrown into a river and captain runs away with Bela, but now the police save Ashok and arrest Captain and Sheela.
Ashok is restored to his parents and Shekhar and Bela get big rewards.
