These two lines of a song from film BAAGHI (1953) sum up the realities of our life. This song penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and coming out of the magical combination of Lata-Madan Mohan was long overdue to be discussed in this blog. One song from this film has been discussed more than a year back.

Most music directors of B grade movies tend to remain confined to B grade music throughout their careers. But the music director duo of Laxmikant Pyarelal were no ordinary music director duo. They began their career as independent music directors with B grade movies/ small budget movies, but they created such stunning music in these movies that they quickly joined the ranks of the most sought after music directors in the Hindi movie music industry.

“Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) is a Durgesh Productions movie. It was directed by Durgesh Kumar and Santosh. This movie, which was clearly inspired from “Barsaat Ki Raat” has some lovely songs in it, which are great to listen to, even though the movie itself was a B grade movie with only small time actors in it, viz. Aruna Irani, Kamaljeet, Kumkum, Mumtaz, Deven Verma, Mohan Choti, Jagdeep, Murad etc in it.

I keep stumbling upon unheard of gems while looking for some other songs. These days I have got the company of several fellow stumblers with me. 🙂 Here is a melody that Khyati Bhatt just stumbled upon while looking for some other song. Coming across unheard of songs just like that is a luxury that was not available till a few years ago. Technology and YT zindabad !

In the golden era of 1950s and 60s of the Hindi film songs, Lata Mangeshkar had sung quite a large number of songs composed by almost all the renowned music directors ( of course with the exception of O P Nayyar) of that time. Many of her songs of that era are still popular. However, there were some songs she sang under the batons of C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan which were, in my view, a class by themselves. Unfortunately, some of these classy songs were from films which flopped miserably and soon they went into oblivion. With them songs from such films were almost ‘buried’ under the ‘debris’ of the new songs over a period of time like that of Harppan and Mohenjodaro civilisation.
