Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka kyaa hai

Posted on: April 5, 2012

I became aware of “Puraskaar” (1970) after Memsaab reviewed this movie in her blog. It turns out that the movie is a treasure of great songs. I wonder how I was not aware of this movie when it was released in 1970s, seeing that this movie had music by R D Burman and I, like most music lovers was a big fan of R D Burman’s music.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past in this blog and that song was discussed by Memsaab herself.

Despite being informed by her that the movie is full of great songs, I did not pursue the matter further, since there are in any case I find myself inundated with lots and lots of songs that I can barely handle and discuss in the blog.

Recently I got reacquainted with “Puraskaar” (1970) once again thanks to the lyrics of some others songs from this movie being sent to me. The song under discussion is one such song.

When I heard this song, I sat up and took notice. How come I had not heard this song before ! It has to be a very special song on many counts. Let me count why this song is special.

This song is an R D Burman composition of 1970 and by that time he had taken Hindi movie music world by storm. And the singer who likewise took the Hindi playback singing world by storm simultaneously was Kishore Kumar in the company of R D Burman. Most established music directors and playback singers found themselves marginalised for a few years in the wake of R D Burman- Kishore Kumar gale force.

But this song does not have the voice of Kishore Kumar in it. In fact this song does not have the voice of Rafi either, who despite popular perception was used by R d Burman even in his heydays, even if sparingly. In this song R D Burman uses the voice of Mukesh !

The song in fact is a duet where Mukesh is joined by Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Joy Mukherji and Helen. Yes, Helen ! Helen was not a one cabarat dance song wonder in this song. Rather she was paired opposite Joy Mukherji in this movie. Incidentally the duo were paired together in the past too, and that was exactly ten years ago in “Hum Hindustani” (1960). there too, the duo sang a duet in the voices of the same singers.

I heard this duet from “Puraskaar” (1970) for the first time only just now and I am floored. This has to be one of the best Mukesh-Asha Bhonsle duets of all time. To borrow a Memsaab term, R D Burman makes excellent use of Mukesh in this song. Of course the picturisation of this song makes excellent use of Helen too.

Another interesting thing to note is that the lyricist of this song is not the usual lyricists of R D Burman, but someone who was more associated with O P Nayyar. Yes, S H Bihari wrote the lyrics of this song (and other songs of movie as well).

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Last but not the least, this song is the 900th Asha Bhonsle song in the blog ! Mukesh completed his 400th song in the blog a few days ago, and Asha Bhonsle completes her 900th song today ! I think that this stunning song is a befitting 900th song of Asha Bhonsle in this blog.

Song-Nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka kya hai (Puraskaar)(1970) Singers-Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-R D Burman
Mukesh + Asha Bhonsle

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka kya hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka kya hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
yeh dil ka lagaana
bura ya bhala hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen

badi mukhtsar hai
mulaaqaat apni
magar keh gaya hai
dil har ek baat apni
badi mukhtsar hai
mulaqaat apni
magar keh gaya hai
dil har ek baat apni
aa aa
yoon hi kyun na guzren
yeh din raat apne
haqeeqat banen kyun na
ghadi bhar ke sapne
kabhi kabhi aisa bhi to
hota raha hai

tumhaari ada ya hamaari ada hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
yeh dil ka lagaana
bura ya bhala hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen

bahut mere dil ke
qareeb aa gayi ho
nasha ban ke aankhon par
meri chha gayi ho
ho o o
pata kuchh nahin hai
yeh kya zindagi hai
magar aisa lagta hai
ke jannat yehi hai
kabhi kabhi aisa bhi to
hota raha hai
tumhaari wafa ya hamaari wafa hai
yeh tum bhi na socho

yeh hum bhi na sochen
nateeja hamaari muhabbat ka kya hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
yeh dil ka lagaana
bura ya bhala hai

yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen

behki huyi hain
jab yeh fizaayen
kaise na hongi aakhir
hum se khataayen
behki huyi hain
jab yeh fizaayen
kaise na hongi aakhir
hum se khataayen

lagen jhoomne jab
kaali ghataayen
aise mein kyun na apne
qadam dagmagaayen
ho o
kabhi kabhi aisa bhi to hota raha hai

tumhaari khata ya hamaari khata hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
yeh dil ka lagaana
bura ya bhala hai
yeh tum bhi na socho
yeh hum bhi na sochen
