Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Neend kabhi rahti thi aankhon mein ab rahte hain saanwariyaa

Posted on: April 15, 2012

“Aasra” (1966) was a Seven arts pictures Production. It was directed by Satyen Bose. The movie had Biswajeet, Mala Sinha, Ameeta, Jagdeep, Bela Bose, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Paul, Balraj Sahni, David Abraham etc in it.

I have no idea how the movie fared at the box office, but judging purely by the songs of this movie, including their picturisation, this movie deserved to be a big success. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us how the movie fared at the box office.

The songs of the movie are gems of the highest quality as has been repeatedly emphasized by several readers. I have been given several farmaishes for the songs of this movie. In fact, the lyrics of the songs have been sent to me by several contributors too.

The most well known song of this movie has been on my radar for quite some time. I noted down the lyrics of this song myself before a few contributors sent me the lyrics of this song. The song is so good that I kept it on hold for some opportune moment. In fact, I held this song back for so long that after some time I felt that I should discuss this song like a normal song. Whenever I entertained such thoughts, I had to change my mind as soon as I played the song. This song is so outstanding that it deserves to be treated as a special song.

Finally I have decided that I cannot hang on to this song any more and let me discuss this song and be done with it.

So what is the special occasion for this song to be discussed now ! This is the occasion when the blog completes yet another century of songs. Yes, this song is the 5800th song of the blog !

This century has been considerably slower than the norm for the blog. It has taken me 20 days instead of the usual 16 days. During these 20 days, there was one day when no songs were discussed and 2 days when I could discuss only one songs each. But seeing that I was quite busy during this period, completing this century in 20 days is quite a feat, I think.

This song from “Aasra” (1966) is an amazing song to listen to. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Mala Sinha. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The blog continues to add likeminded music lovers, and a few of them become contributors. The involvement to the readers will hopefully continue in the future and help drive this blog because we still have a long long musical journey ahead of us. Despite covering so many songs, we have only just about seen the tip of the iceberg that Hindi movie music is. We still need to cover lots and lots of songs. We have been making steady progress in our journey. When one goes through the list of songs that have been discussed in the blog, one can see that we have covered the cream of Hindi movie songs and there is still lots of cream that has not yet been touched.

I take this opportunity to one again thank all the visitors, contributors and well wishers of this blog for their continued encouragement and goodwill that they continue to shower opn this blog. May this journey continue and more with more likeminded music lovers joining in the bandwagon.

Song-Neend kabhi rehti thhi aankhon mein (Aasraa) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

hmm hmm
neend kabhi rehti thhi aankhon mein
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
aa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
chain kabhi rehtaa thhaa is dil mein
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
aa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa

aaaa aaa
aa aa aa
o o o o o
log mujhse kahen
dekho udhar niklaa hai chaand
kaun dekhe udhar
jaane kidhar niklaa hai chaand
chaand kabhi rehtaa thhaa nazron mein
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa

jhooth boli pawan
kehne lagi aayi bahaar
ham baag mein gaye
dekhaa wahaan pyaar hi pyaar
phool rehte honge chaman mein kabhi
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
aa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa

baat pehle bhi aur
toofaan se darte thhey ham
baat ab aur hai
ab hai hamen kaahe kaa gham
saath kabhi maanjhi thhey sang lekin
ab rehte hain
saanwariyaa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
neend kabhi rehti thhi aankhon mein
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa
ab rehte hain saanwariyaa

It was not a successful film. Though the songs were good.

I’d seen this movie when it released. I remember little of ‘Aasra’ except for the superb songs! ‘Dayya re dayya yashoda maiyya, isko sambhal…’ was another good song sung by Lata.

Congrats Atul-ji for having reached the figure of 5800 songs! It’s no mean feat I tell you. Having reached this figure, 6000 sounds like a ‘baye haath ka khel’ for you!

Hearty congrats, Atul. Another century! So what if it took 20 days instead of the normal 16, some people take more than a year for a century. 😉

I love the way new contributors are chipping in, whether with lyrics or write-ups or comments. That’s really wonderful because it shows how much these people care about this blog.

Of late I have not been commenting THAT much but you know that I follow this blog every single day (well, if I log into the internet that day). I know there are many write-ups I should be reading and commenting on – sometimes I am unable to keep up. My apologies to those contributors – I would love to comment more here because I know each comment does make a difference.

I need to listen to this song properly – first wanted to congratulate you. 🙂 Now the 6000 looks very close.

You know what? Being the cricket-crazy guy that I am (in addition to being song-crazy), whenever I see your song count here, some cricketer’s stats come to mind. When I saw 5800, the first thing that came to my mind is 5807 – Denis Compton. 🙂

Dennis Compton. He must be a contemporary of K L Saigal, I think. 🙂

Congrats on 5800th song. I had forgotten that i had sent this song and the song from ‘Parda”. There is typo in the lyrics :
baath pehle ‘ thhi ‘ aur
toofan se darte thhe ham

Atulji,
Congrats! Let’s see, how fast you/we finish the next double century! No pressure from us. It doesn’t matter how many days, what matter is the content. (Aap Ramayan ki Shabri ki tarah humein meethe meethe gaane chun chun ke paronshte ho) While keeping the target in my, the goal should not only to achieve it faster, but rather we should enjoy the journey also.

You are right, the songs of this film were lovely. I haven’t seen this movie, but I suspect it was a weepie. The songs are nothing to weep about, they are to be enjoyed.

Many congratulations of completion of yet another landmark. May you soon reach 10 thou!

I am also not thinking of going fast. It is just that I have by now realised what is the optimum speed at which I go. This speed is 6-7 songs a day, and that works out to be 16 days for 100 songs.
