Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aji biwi ko ghar pe bithhlaa ke

Posted on: April 28, 2012

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This time I have found a very rare duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi. It is from the film “Minister”(1959). The song is written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by Madan Mohan. I have not heard or seen this song before. But it is a nice and funny song performed on screen by Tun Tun and Bhagwaan. It is the eternal fight between husbands and wives, which holds good across cultures world wide. Wife accusing husband of being irresponsible and careless and husband complaining that wife is always ready for a fight and doubting the husband at every turn.

Than there is this last exchange:

kabhi kamaa ke khaao to
tum jaano mehnat mardon ki
le de ke bas yehi ek to
dhauns hai tum be-dardon ki
chaubees ghante khidmat le kar
bhi ehsaan jataate ho

My own feeling about this are need based. And one situation is different from another. Whatever is mutually agreeable is the best solution. This may be fence sitting, but there it is. I have seen some families with both husband and wife working. If they are able to co-operate with each other and share the burden of household responsibilities including children’s care, it may work fine. If not than the bulk of housework etc. invariably falls on women, and they end up losing peace of mind as well as their individuality and identity anyway. It should be important for both men and women to have a important position not only at work place but also at home and within a family. And one has to work at strengthening one’s position, which is also time consuming.

This movie is full of duets like Lata-Rafi, Asha-Rafi and Lata-Mahendra Kapoor. One Lata solo is already posted in the blog. Luckilyaudio & video both are available forthis song. The video is shorter by one stanza, and the audio link has the full song. Lyrics are for the full song.

Song-Aji biwi ko ghar pe bithhla ke (Minister)(1959) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

aa haa
jaa jaa
aa haa
oh haa
ae he

ae ji biwi ko ghar pe bithlaa ke
tum baahar kyun jaate ho
jab ghar mein chulhaa jaltaa hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho
biwi ko ghar pe bithlaa ke
tum baahar kyun jaate ho
jab ghar mein chulhaa jaltaa hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho

baat baat pe shaque karna yeh
aurat hi ka hissa hai
arrey baat baat pe shaque karna yeh
aurat hi ka hissa hai
miyaan biwi ka jhagdaa to
badaa puraana qissa hai
zaraa kaho to iss jhadge ki
naubat hi kyun laate ho
jab ghar mein chulha jalta hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho

aa haa
jaa jaa
oh hoo
hmm mmm
ae ha haa haa
chal hatt

janam se hi jhagdaalu hai
iss duniya ki har shrimati
janam se hi jhagdaalu iss
duniya ki har shrimati
kyun na rahe kunwaare hi tum
kaahe ko phir bane pati
pati bane to shrimati se
ab kyun aankh churaate ho
jab ghar mein chulha jalta hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho
biwi ko ghar pe bithlaa ke
tum baahar kyun jaate ho
jab ghar mein chulhaa jaltaa hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho

shaadi ka matlab kyaa tum ko
baandh ke rakhhen palle se
o shaadi ka matlab kyaa tum ko
baandh ke rakhhen palle se
duniyaa kya kya kehti hai
zara poochho gali mohalle se
subha ko nikle kahaan se
aadhi aadhi raat ko aate ho
jab ghar mein chulha jalta hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho

aa haa
jaa jaa
oh hoo
hmm hmmhmmm
ae ha haa haa
chal hatt

kabhi kamaa ke khaao to
tum jaano mehnat mardon ki
haan
kabhi kamaa ke khaao to
tum jaano mehnat mardon ki
le de ke bas yehi ek to
dhauns hai tum be-dardon ki
chaubees ghante khidmat le kar
bhi ehsaan jataate ho
jab ghar mein chulha jalta hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho
biwi ko ghar pe bithlaa ke
tum baahar kyun jaate ho
jab ghar mein chulhaa jaltaa hai
phir hotel mein kyun khaate ho

I had used double T in ‘Bitthla” because the the sound of ‘ tth ‘ here is different from the ‘thh’ of say ‘haathh’ . In hindi/urdu different alphabets are used in these words. This is a glaring limitation of the English script as it has no alphabet for ‘t’ of ‘teer’ . we have to use the same thing for teer and tata.

These things are destined to go the way, ‘phool’ has become a ‘fool’ for all intents and purposes. Why not change alphabet also to alfabet ? them physics will be easy as fisix too 🙂 .

Superb song! Hearing it for the first time and really liked it. Its tune reminds me of “mera naam chin chin choo”.

Always good to see Bhagwan Dada and Tuntun, especially when Bhagwan Dada is dancing.

Nice write-up too, nahm. I totally agree with you that if both husband-wife share in family responsibilities, there’s much less scope for quarrels. 🙂 And of course, 9 out of 10 times, an imbalance (sadly) works against the wife.
