Raat bhi sard hai

Posted on: June 10, 2012

“Mujrim”(1970) was produced by S P Suri and directed by Kewal Mishra. The movie had Joy Mukherjee, Kumud Chuggani, Dev Kumar, Jayant, Nishi, Brahmachari, Hiralal, Rajan Haksar, Kundan, Balwant, Jayshree T., Meenakshi, Rekha Chauhan, Roopali, Birbal etc in it.

I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from this movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is lip synced by a lady who I guess is Kumud Chhugani (I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her) and Joy Mukherji.

Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sonik Omi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Raat bhi sard hai (Mujrim)(1970) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

raat bhi sard hai
aaj dil mein dard hai
raat bhi sard hai
aaj dil mein dard hai
thartharaaun main
behki jaaun main
jaan le
ke aaj mujh ko jaane kya hua hai
raat bhi sard hai
aaj dil mein dard hai
thartharaaun main
behki jaaun main
jaan le
ke aaj mujh ko jaane kya hua hai
raat bhi sard hai

saans ek teer banti hai
jo chalti hai
yeh naam leke tera
saans ek teer banti hai
jo chalti hai
yeh naam leke tera
na ruk sake
woh josh hai
main kho gayi
na hosh hai
tu jaan le
ke aaj mujh ko jaane kya hua hai
raat bhi sard hai
aaj dil mein dard hai

dekho yeh meri angdaayi
yeh tanhaayi
pukaare tujh ko
jaanaa
dekho yeh meri angdaayi
yeh tanhaayi
pukaare tujh ko
jaanaa
nazar to kar o humsafar
mere nasheele husn par
tu jaan le
ke aaj mujh ko jaane kya hua hai
raat bhi sard hai
aaj dil mein dard hai
thartharaaun main
behki jaaun main
jaan le
ke aaj mujh ko jaane kya hua hai
raat bhi sard hai

Yes! You’re right! You can yell like Rajendra Kumar…”Maa, mujhe aashirwad do! Main first class first aaya, maa!” The lady in question is indeed Kumud Chugani. Like so many others, she shone for a brief period and magically vanished, never to appear again……

Atul ji,
MUJRIM-1970 was an ordinary film with a highly predictable story and average music.
This is a story of Gopal who is an ace driver having won Gold medals in car races.
One day when he is driving along,he sees a girl being forced by few criminals. He rushes to help her.During the fight, the girl disappears and Gopal drives on,when he is followed and arrested by Police for murdering Deepak, one of the goons in the incident.Deepak is the brother of dreaded criminal Gangaram(Jayant) serving in jail.Learning about Deepak’s death,Gangaram escapes from the jail to avenge brother’s death.Meanwhile Gopal also escapes from Police van and takes shelter in a Goa bound truck, owned by Ganga singh(Dev Kumar) and Manju Singh(Kumud Chhgani). With police and Gangaram chasing him Gopal and Manju fall in love and sing love songs too to reduce their tension. After reacing Goa,Gangaram kidnaps manju.Gopal suddenly finds Saloni(Nishi) the girl who had disappeared and who is eywitness to real murderer of Deepak. Now Saloni,Gangasingh and Gopal together rescue Manju and hand over Gangaram to police.
Kumud Chhugani was a good dancer.i have given details about her in my comments dated 24-12-2011 on the song ‘dil tadap tadpaye’ of Poonam ki Raat.

I think Kumud Chugani’s memorable movie was ‘Poonam ki Raat’ opposite Manoj Kumar. The ‘bhoot’ song “Tujh bin jiya udaas re, ye kaisi anbhuj pyaas re…” by Lata is an evergreen one. In the movie it’s sung by an actress named Purnima who vanished after just one movie.

Menon ji,
Actress Poornima was an established actress and acted in atleast 35 to 40 films, initially as a Heroine and later as a character artist.
In any case she had NOT acted in POONAM KI RAAT.Her name does not feature in the credits.Further, the song,’Tujh bin jiya udas re’ has been already posted in this blog and if you read the comments on it,you will know that the song is filmed on Kumud Chhugani herself.

I associate Kumud Chuggani more with Vaasna (1968). The two songs that spring to mind ‘Yeh Parbaton Ke Daaire’ and ‘Itni Naazuk Na Bano’, are both marvellous.

In Dharmendra`s Resham ki dori,
Kumud Chugani played his sister`s role and lip synced for famous Suman Kalyanpur song “Behnaa ne bhai ki kalaayee mein pyaar baandhaa hai”

I remember her in negative roles in Prem Nagar(-rajesh khanna starrer-She played Ramesh deo`s wife)and Aaj ka mahatma(Randhir kapoor,Rekha starrer)
