Today’s song is from the movie ‘Veer Bhimsen-1964’. Six songs from this movie, out of ten songs, have already been posted on this blog earlier. Today I am presenting the seventh song from this movie.
Our senior member Shree Sadanand Kamath jee has mentioned in details about the story of this movie, while presenting this song ‘aayee aaj bidaa kee belaa’ from this movie. I have also reproduced that text from his above post while presenting a couple of songs from this movie .
Here is the abridged story line of the movie:-
“‘Veer Bhimsen’ is a mythological film connected with the epic of Mahabharata from the viewpoint of Bhimsen. In Mahabharata, Bhimsen, the second among the five Pandav brothers, has been depicted as a man with extra-ordinary power, strength, unsatiable appetite and the devotion to his family. The story of the film is based on some of such episodes in the epic of Mahabharata. There are many episodes in the film build around Bhimsen, like killing of demon Bakasura, king Jarasandha, killing of Kichaka, and his meeting with Lord Hanuman etc.
‘Veer Bhimsen-1964’ was directed by Chandrakant for ‘Joy Films, Bombay’. This is a ‘mythological genre’ movie. The cast of this movie included Dara Singh, Anita Guha, Mumtaz, Mahipal, Sumitra Devi, Shahu Modak, Randhawa, Tiwari, Sapru, B.M. Vyas, Amarnath, Vishwas Kunte, Ravi Kumar, Babu Raje, Radheshyam, Shribhagwan, Dubey, Anand Tiwari, Prithvi, Ajeet Soni, Pt. Iqbal, Pahalwan, Kingkong, Tiger Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh, Swarn Singh, Rana Pratap Singh and many others. This movie has as many as ten songs penned by Kavi Pradeep and composed to music by C. Ramchandra. Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar and Kavi Pradeep are the playback singers for this movie.
Today’s song is a poignant song from this movie which happens during the ‘drauapadee vastraharan’ episode in the movie. On screen we have actress Sumitra Devi (I hope I am correct) as Draupadee remonstrating against all present in the ‘raajyasabhaa’ where King Dhritarashtra, Queen Gandhari, the minsters of Kauravas, Pitamah Bheeshm and many others are seen supporting the Kauravas. We also have the helpless Pandavas who lost the dice game and also lost Draupadee in the game to the Kauravas. I can identify some of them as Shakuni (B.M. Vyas), Randhawa (Duryodhan), Tiwari (Dushasana) and others. Among the Pandavas we can see Dara Singh as Bheem. And among the Gods I can identify Shahu Modak as Lord Krishna. As we are well aware of, as it happened, Lord Krishna saves Draupadee from the embarrassment and helps her by providing endless supply of the clothes which Dushasana could not exhaust and finally fell down exhausted. The heart rending lyrics are by Kavi Pradeep and Music is composed by C. Ramchandra.
Geet Kosh mentions the name of Asha Bhonsle only as the singer and accompanied by chorus. However there are few lines in the voice of Kavi Pradeep which are played in the background as Lord Krishna saves Draupadee from ‘cheer haran’. Let us listen to this song now.
