Brij ke Nandlala Radha ke saanwariya

Posted on: August 10, 2012

“Taksaal” (1956) was a Hemen Gupta Production movie. The movie was produced and directed by Hemen Gupta. The movie had Balraj Sahani, Nirupa Roy, Smriti Biswas, Radhakrishna, Helen, Hiralal etc in it.

I had never heard of this movie and I wonder what this movie is all about. Taksaal means “Mint” viz the place where coins are produced. I wonder how one can make a full movie on the theme of “Taksaal”.

I became aware of this movie thanks to the fact that Mr Sadanand Kamath sent me the lyrics of a song from “Taksaal” (1956) to be discussed on the occasion of Janmashtami which falls today (10 august 2012) this year.

As can be guessed, the video of this movie seems to have become extinct like the one paisa coin that was in circulation in India till 1970s. Only the audio of this song is available. It is sung by Lata. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan.

It is difficult to guess how and whom this song is picturised and I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the picturisation of this song as well as on the movie itself.

Song-Brij ke nandlala raadha ke saanwariya (Taksaal) (1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

brij ke nandlaala
raadha ke saanwariyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab teraa naam liyaa
brij ke nandlaala
raadha ke saanwariyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab teraa naam liyaa

meeraa pukaari jab
giridhar gopaalaa
meeraa pukaari jab
giridhar gopaalaa
dhal gayaa amrit mein
vish kaa bharaa pyaalaa
dhal gayaa amrit mein
vish kaa bharaa pyaalaa
kaun mitaaye use
jise tu raakhe piyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab teraa naam liyaa
brij ke nandlaala
raadha ke saanwariyaa

jab tere gokul pe
aayaa dukh bhaari
jab tere gokul pe
aayaa dukh bhaari
ek ishaare se
sab bipdaa taari
ek ishaare se
sab bipdaa taari
mud gayaa govardhan
tu ne jise mod diyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab teraa naam liyaa
brij ke nandlaala
raadha ke saanwariyaa

naino mein shyaam basey
man mein banwaari
naino mein shyaam basey
man mein banwaari
sudh bisraaye gayi
murli ki dhun pyaari
sudh bisraaye gayi
murli ke dhun pyaari
man ke madhuban mein
raas rachaaye rasiyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab teraa naam liyaa
brij ke nandlaala
raadha ke saanwariyaa
sabhi dukh door huye
jab tera naam liyaa

Atul ji,
TAKSAL-1956 was a Hemen Gupta Prodn. film,Produced and Directed by Hemen Gupta himself.Hemen Gupta was a well known name in Bangla filmdom, but he also dabbled in Hindi starting with Taqdeer-1944,followed by Anand Math,Ferry,Minar,Babar,Kabuliwala and finally Netaji Subhashchandra Bose in 1966.
The midfifties was era in India where the hugh middleclass was besotted with Nehru’s Socialism.Indian Film Industry did not lag behind and in this period many films were made either openly or subtly supporting the socialist cause.Mehboob,K.A.Abbas and others of the ilk were sold to this ideology and made films on such themes.Film makers like B.R.Chopra was another who espoused the cause of social anti evils like prostitution,Communal feelings etc.The dignity of labour(Naya Daur) and Villege life of poor farmers(Mother India) were made into films.
For the common man socialism meant all rich is bad,all poor is good.
Those making money, even honestly, were looked down upon.
Taksal was yet another such movie which stressed that Money is not the solution to all problems and money is only the means and not the End.

Jatin mukherji (Balraj Sahni)an honest and brilliant lawyer, his wife Maya(Nirupa Roy),3 children and his unmarried sister(Smriti Biswas) are happily living together.Maya is very religious. She does not allow Jatin to tak any case of cheating, murder or crime.Slowly his practice goes down and he becomaes so poor that his son Ram dies for lack of treatment.Same time, his sister commits suicide when she is raped by her employer.
Jatin thinks that all his problems are because he is poor,so he decided to make money by hook or crook. He does so,by indulging in many illegal affairs, against the advice of maya.he becomes very rich.
The “Lambe haath of kanoon” catch up with him one day and no amount of money saves him.he realises then that Money can not solve all problems. But it is too late.
The music is by Roshan, assisted by H.K.Maria.The film had 3 very good bhajans. There were 8 songs and 6 singers-Lata,Rafi,SDBatish,Uma Devi,Laxmi Shankar and Ratna Gupta.

Thanks for the synopsis of the film. Like Atul, I had no idea as to how the title of the film ‘Taksaal’ (Mint) could be a theme for the movie when I saw a 78 RPM record of this film in a shop in the Fort area in early 70s. It was only when I listened to this song that I decided to buy the gramophone record.

Now it is very clear that the name of the film ‘Taksaal’ is a metaphor. Balraj Sahani as a lawyer was poor when he worked honestly. But the moment he turned to dishonesty, he ‘minted’ money. But his ‘taksaal’ could not save him from the clutches of the law.

Atul ji,
I am not very sure, but it is filmed on Nirupa Roy.As she is shown very religious she actually sings 3 Bhajans in this film.I vaguely remember that when their 3rd child is born, there are celebrations and this song takes place.

The best song from this film is “Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere” by Lata Mangeshkar. The audio is available on YouTube.
