It is often remarked that the current generation i. e. my generation is devoid of any patriotic feeling or love for the country. We have no sense of societal obligations or awareness about how we have acheieved the freedom enjoyed by us or know nothing about the greatness of the country. This is not true though. We do love India. We do know the things that make it India. However we are also acutely aware of all that doesn’t make us proud of it.
Each one of us tries to do something for it in our own way. Some of us work to keep the country clean by being finicky about it. Some of us try to fight corruption. Some of us try to spread awareness about the culture and art we have. We are far more communally peaceful and understanding of diversity. But our fights are different from what it was in 1947 or earlier.
Rang de Basanti(2006) was a movie that brought out the dormant patriotism in the country. It gave reasons and methods to fight for equality, justice, peace in the country. The values we all sometimes only read about in the preamble of the constitution that gets printed on textbook front pages. Using parallel plots of the revolutionary leaders and current DU students who help film a documentary on these very same leaders, it showed how it is not very different lives that we lead. How we aren’t under the oppression of the British but still shackled in the same manner by the systems that have become quicksand for the common man.
The effect of the movie was unparalleled. This was seen in cases such as the Jessica lal case, the Nitish Katara case, the Priyadarshini Matoo case, in the fight against caste based reservations, etc. People fought for someone else because they saw it as for India. The movie still moves me every time I see it and makes us want to do something for India.
This song is the title track of the movie. It has been picturised on Aamir Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Siddharth and Alice Patten as the traverse through Punjab in preparation for the movie. It has been composed by A. R. Rehman. lyrics are by Prasoon Joshi and the playback is by Daler Mehendi and Chitra.
