Dil yoon yoon karta hai

Posted on: September 16, 2012

“Heer Ranjha” (1948) was a Punjab Film Corporation. It was directed by Wali Sahab and the movie had Ghulam Mohammed, Mumtaz Shanti, Shree Nath, Roop Kamal, Gulab, Majnu, Aziz Kashmiri etc in it.

This movie is one of the lesser known movies on the theme of Heer Ranjha.

I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from “Heer Ranjha” (1948).

This song is a trivia buff’s delight. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and a male voice who was not known for his singing. This movie had Aziz Khan as music director and Sharmaji Vermaji as his assistants. But by now, many sites have erroneously begun to mention Aziz Khan and Sharmaji Vermaji as the two sets of music directors in this movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

The male voice belongs to Sharmaji, who is now better known as Khayyam. This is a lovely playful duet.

Wali Khan is the lyricist of this song.

What a nice and lovely duet it is ! A forgotten gem and a pleasant surprise indeed.

Song-Dil yoon yoon karta hai (Heer Ranjha)(1948) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Khayyam, Lyrics-Wali Sahab, MD-Aziz Khan

Lyrics

Dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
haaye ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai
aji ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai
armaan hain milne ke
armaan hain milne ke
aur milne se darta hai
aur milne se darta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
haaye ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai

dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
dil yoon yoon karta hai
baalon ke sanwarne se
baalon ke sanwarne se
ye aur bigadta hai
ye aur bigadta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
aji ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai

dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
haaye ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai
mar mar ke ye jeeta hai
mar mar ke ye jeeta hai
jee jee ke ye marta hai
jee jee ke ye marta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
haaye ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai

dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
dil yoon yoon karta hai
saathi meri khushiyon ka
saathi meri khushiyon ka
lo aaj bichhadta hai
lo aaj bichhadta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
aji ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai

dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
haaye ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai
ye dard anokha hai
ye dard anokha hai
kam hone se badhta hai
kam hone se badhta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
aji ke
dil yoon yoon karta hai
armaan hain milne ke
armaan hain milne ke
aur milne se darta hai
aur milne se darta hai
dil yoon yoon
dil yoon yoon karta hai
aji ke

Atul ji,
The composers for this film were Aziz Khan,Vermaji and Sharmaji-all 3 together.
Sharma ji was no one else but Khayyam himself and Vermaji was Rehman Verma-ex assistant to Khemchand Prakash.he later went to Pakistan. In the initial period, khayyam gave music to few films in the name of Sharmaji.

If I recall correctly, Aziz Khan also composed music as Aziz Hindi. He was the brother of Hafiz Khan Mastana, MD and playback singer.

Yes, Aziz Khan was also known as Aziz Hindi.

Another little info. Late Aziz Khan is father of Ustad Shahid Pervez!

Atul ji / Kamath ji,
Aziz khan and Aziz Hindi were 2 different persons. They operated also in slightly different periods.
Aziz Khan started his music composing career with ‘Flying Prince’-1946,a Basant Pictures Wadia film.
Aziz Hindi started with Acharya Art Prodn.’s ‘Parivartan’-1949.
Aziz Khan’s other films were-
Panditji-46,Intezar ke baad-47,Utho jaago-47,Heer Ranjha-48(with Sharmaji-Vermaji), etc.His last film was Zamane ki hawa-1952 with Khan Mastana,Gulshan Sufi and Zed Sharman.
Aziz Hindi’s other films were-
Shoharat-49,Biwi-50,Actor-51,Putali-50,Danka-54,Dhup chhaon-54 (A tune of a song from this film Jhuk ke zameen, has been copied by Madan mohan in Mohar 59 song-Tum ho saath) and last film Chalta purja-58.

There is considerable confusion on internet. I think I read somewhere that these two were the same person. It just shows the extent of disinformation thanks to ignorance that is in circulation on internet that with time becomes accepted as fact.

My information that Aziz Khan and Aziz Hindi are the same person was based the website http://www.shahidparvezkhan.com/gharana.html .

I presume that this website belongs to Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, son of Aziz Khan if I go by the accredition of the copyright of the website to him. In this webite, some of the films’ names you mentioned against both the names are credited to Aziz Khan who used pseudo name in some films as Aziz Hindi.

Kamath ji,
I visited this perticular site and read the material.Though the site may belong to Ustad Shaid parvez khan, the write up ,looks like, must be written by someone who has no first hand info on Hindi cinemas.I found lot of discrepancies in it-
1.The years of films mentioned are wrong.
2.most important, probably the writer does not know that after Heer Ranjha,Rehman Verma (Vermaji of the duo Sharmaji-vermaji) left India for Pakistan and all the mentioned films had music by only Sharmaji,i.e.Khayyam.But he mentions both names for all the films.
3.Barring intezar ke baad-47(and NOT 49 as mentioned by the writer) all other film credits indicate the name of Aziz Hindi. Not even another 1 film of Aziz Khan is mentioned by him.
Two separate bios of Aziz Hindi and Aziz Khan(without a mention of his lineage) appear in “Dhunon ki Yatra” book.

You are right. There are some inconsistencies.
Now I am confused as to which of Aziz is the brother of Hafiz Khan Mastana ?

Atul ji,
The story of how Khayyam got the film ‘Heer Ranjha’,is very interesting.
Khayyam and Rehman Verma were struggling to give music as a jodi of Sharmaji-Vermaji.Why Khayyam took the name of Sharmaji has also a history behind it.
When Khayyam returned from Calcutta to Bombay, after being an assistant to Chisti for the music of 2 films-Zuthi Kasme and Yehi hai Zindagi,he met his Guru-Husnlal Bhagatram. Those were the days of Partition and khayyam was a bit scared. They told him,’dont worry. We are here to protect you.You take up the name Sharmaji and give music as Varmaji-Sharmaji.’
Khayyam and Verma met Wali Saheb, the lyricist and Director of Heer Ranjha and also the owner of Punjab Film Corporation,Bombay. Aziz Hindi/khan was already appointed as its MD.These two recited few punjabi style tunes to Wali Sahib.he liked them.He said,”very good.Aziz saab cannot give punjabi style tunes. You both do the Punjabi type songs and Aziz saab will do the rest songs.” Thus they got the film.

BTW,the above song is composed by vermaji-Sharmaji and not by Aziz Khan,as mentioned.

After doing 2 more films alone as Sharmaji-Biwi and Parda,Khayyam got FOOTPATH.
From this film he became Khayyam. How ? Read this story from khayyam himself-
“When I got Footpath, everyone knew me as Sharmaji and that I was Khayyam originally. An appointment with Zia Sarhadi and Chandulal Shah of Ranjit was fixed for me.This was only a formality.Zia saab had already heard my tunes and okeyed them. When I entered the A.C.Room,I saw Chandulal Shah first time.White shirt and white hair, his trademark. He looked like a typical Seth ji. As soon as he saw me,he shouted,”What is your real name ?” I knew that he did not like sharmaji.I also shouted at him,” Mohammed Zahoor khayyam Hashmi’.he seemed to like Khayyam. He double shouted again,’ Aaj se Khayyam Likho’. And he dismissed me.Then onwards I was Khayyam always.”

I wish to make the following points for the sake of the completeness of this post and comments:

1. Now it is clear that Music director Aziz Khan also composed songs under the name of Aziz Hindi and they are one and the same person. Even in the interview which Khayyam saab gave on Rajya Sabha TV, he referred to Aziz Khan as Aziz Hindi as the music director of ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1948).

2. In the ‘List of Songs-Movie-wise’ the name of music director has been shown as ‘Aziz Khan/ assisted by Sharmaji-Vermaji’ for the film. In the above mentioned interview, Khayyam saab has made it clear that six songs were independently composed by Sharmaji-Vermaji. (Khayyam-Rehman).

3. The song under discussion was composed by Sharmaji-Vermaji and not by Aziz Khan.

Necessary corrections may please be carried out.
