Aaj ki raat saaz e dil e purdard na chhed

Posted on: September 21, 2012

“Jugnu” (1947) was a major Hindi movie in many ways. It was Noorjehaan’s last Hindi movie. It was this movie which gave us Dilip Kumar, who till then was a struggler. Noorjahaan acting opposite Dilip Kumar gave Dilip Kumar’s career a big fillip and he never looked back since.

The music of “Jugnu” (1947) is remembered to this day. What lovely songs this movie had.

On the occasion of Noorjahaan’s birth anniversary, here is a song from “Jugnu” (1947). The song is sung by Noorjahaan and it is picturised on Noorjahaan and Dilip Kumar. Noorjahaan seated on a bench and singing this pathos filled song to Dilip Kumar- this picturisation has the effect to move the watcher even today, that is how well this song has been rendered.

Azir Sarhadi is the lyricist. Internet resources (all of them, without any exception on variation) mention that Azir Sarhadi has penned two lyrics in this movie. Apart from that, one does not find any mention of Azir Sarhadi anywhere else. I find it difficult to believe that a lyricist of this class failed to get any other assignments in Hindi movies. Perhaps he did, but we are not aware of them. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on him.
PS-Our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh informs that the lyricist is Asghar Sarhadi. It means that the name Azir Sarhadi, which is found in lots of online sites is a result of mindless copy and paste operations.

Feroz Nizami is the lyricist.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Aaj ki raat saaz e dil e purdard na chhed (Jugnu)(1947) Singer-Noorjahaan, Lyrics-Asghar Sarhadi, MD-Feroz Nizami

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

aa
aa aa aaa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aaj ki raat
aaaj ki raat
saaz-e-dil-e-purdard na chhed
aaj ki raat
kaul ulfat ka jo hanste huye taaron ne suna
kaul ulfat ka jo hanste huye taaron ne suna
band kaliyon ne suna,
mast bahaaron ne suna
band kaliyon ne suna,
mast bahaaron ne suna
sab se chhup kar jise do,
haan sab se chhup kar jise,
do prem ke maaron ne suna
khwaab ki baat samajh
isko haqeeqat naa bana
aaj ki raat
saaz-e-dil-e-purdard na chhed
aaj ki raat

ab hain armanon pe chhaaye huye baadal kaale
ae ae
ab hain armanon pe chhaaye huye baadal kaale
ae ae
phoot kar jisme lage hain
mere dil ke chhaale ae
phoot kar jisme lage hain
mere dil ke chhaale
aankh bhar aayi,
chhalkane ko hain ab ye pyaale
aankh bhar aayi,
chhalkane ko hain ab ye pyaale
muskuraayenge
mere haal pe duniyaawaale
aaj ki raat
saaz-e-dil-e-purdard na chhed
aaj ki raat

bebason par ye sitam
bebason par ye sitam
khoob zamaane ne kiya
bebason par ye sitam
khoob zamaane ne kiya
khel khela thha muhabbat ka
adhoora hi raha
khel khela thha muhabbat ka
adhoora hi raha
haaye taqdeer ke,
taqdeer se poora na huaa aa
haaye taqdeer ke,
taqadeer se poora na hua aa
aise aani thhi judaai ee ee
mujhe ae ae maaloom na tha
aaj ki raat
saaz-e-dil-e-purdard na chhed
saaz-e-dil-e-purdard na chhed
aaj ki raaat

Atul ji,,
The name of the Lyricist is ASGHAR SARHADI and NOT Azir Sarhadi.
He started his filmi career with Jugnu-1947 but then he left for Pakistan along with Noorjahan and her husband Shaukat hussain. In Pakistan,he continued writing lyrics to several films.
The story of how and why Noorjahan left India,in a great hurry, when, originally they had decided to stay in India,is very interesting and has been told by a journalist who was close to the powers that be ,during those years,in India.
During the jugnu period, once Baburao patel and Shaukat hussain had some arguments over the film.Patel was very angry and he threatened Hussain that he can,if he wants, spoil his film career in india.Hussain was also angry and said that patel was free to do what he wanted and he is not bothered.
Angry and ego-hurt Baburao patel, same day met Morar ji Desai,Chief misnister of Bombay that time and told him that the film Jugnu is spreading wrong ideas to young collegians, between professors and students.Desai saw the 3.30 pm show of jugnu and same day the film was banned in Bombay. After many cuts and delay, jugnu was again shown in Bombay, but Shaukat Hussain and Noorjahan were scared. They feared for their life and overnight decided to migrate to a “safe heaven’
Pakistan.

Lots and lots of sites mention this song as written by Azir Sarhadi. So it shows how the same error continues to get propagated on internet.

The information about Baburao Patel and Shaukat Hussain is quite interesting. This episode obviously had long lasting effect on the course that the Hindi movie music took in the coming decades.

Baburao Patel was fiery writer who could make or mar the career who was wrong side of him. He would spew brim and brimstone down anybody shoulder. One has to only read his magazine Mother India. He was a classic example of the maxim pen is mightier than sword. Always attired in white dhoti and kurta he was formidable personality. He wrote Bhagwat Geeta in English, I still hold a copy of the same bought by my father who read one chapter everyday.
His wife Sushila Rani Patel (still looks ravishing) in the middle nineties still gives classical programmes

Such a good nature lady Noor Jehan, now I have little more respect to her…but always a great lady 🙂
Too bad this is our world, the story behind the screen of our times.
Makes me sick!
Sometimes I wonder how Lata survived? She must have all favorable planets in her horoscope 🙂
