Maine jo lee angdaayi dheere se muskaayee

Posted on: October 4, 2012

Whenever I am reminded of “Jaagte Raho”(1956), I am reminded of the wonderful drunkard song from this movie which is sung by Mukesh and picturised on Motilal. This song,Zindagi khwaab hai is picturised on a fully drunk Motilal swaying merrily in empty streets and going towards his home, with Raj Kapoor looking on.

What happens next after this song is over ? I was not aware since I have not seen the movie. Now that I have been sent the lyrics of another song from this movie, I have some idea. The drunk Motilal takes Raj Kapoor home with him. There he plays this song on his record player.

Still drunk, Motilal sways to the music. Believing Raj Kapoor to be a woman, he tries to go near him while Raj Kapoor runs for his life, within the house of couse. Motilal imagines that Raj Kapoor is a pretty lady and she is singing this song “Maine jo lee angdaayi dheere se muskaayi”. What a lovely song. I had never heard this song before !

This song is sung by Sandhya Mukherjee whose birth anniversary falls today (4 october). She has sung this song wonderfully. And who is the pretty lady who lip syncs in Sandhya Mukherji’s voice ? She does a great job. In fact I have fallen in love with the actress without knowing anyhing about her. 🙂
PS-She is Sumitra Devi, who plays the wife of Motilal in this movie. I thank Mr Sadanand Kamath for this information.

The song also has a male voice which is that of Haridhan. Voice of chorus is also there in the song.

Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

What a delightful song ! It is beautifully sung and picturised.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath. He has also written in detail about Sandhya Mukherjee in one of his earlier write ups, viz. Ye baat koi samjhaaye re (Sazaa).

The actress is Sumitra Devi. Actually her role in the film is that of a neglected wife of Motilal. This is the only scene where she is imagined to be dancing and smiling.by Motilal.

Thank you, Sadanand-ji! I didn’t know the name of the actress. Neither did I know that she had played the role of Motilal’s neglected wife.

By the way, I have never ever seen such a hilarious scene in a movie! Motilal is too good as the drunkard!

Atul ji,
The name of SUMITRA DEVI may not click for today’s generation,so here is some info about her.
She was born in Birbhum district of East Bengal(now Bangla Desh),in 1923 in a Bramhin family. Her real name was Nilima Chatterjee.Lured by the emerging cinema in those days, she joined New Theatres at Calcutta, against family’s opposition. Her first films were Sandhi and My sister.Since she had grown up in Bihar, her Hindi was very good.In her first film itself she got Best Actress award from Bengal journalists Assn.
After few Bangla films she came to Bombay to act in bilingual film Mashal(Samar in Bengali) by Bombay Talikes. Then came mayurpankh,Mamta,Deewana, etc. She acted in 24 Hindi films. She used to shuttle between Calcutta and Bombay doing both films for a long time. Her first marriage failed, second Husband committed suicide in 1947.Finally she married Sharma,a Bombay Businessman and died as his wife on 28-8-1990.

JAAGTE RAHO (1956) was produced by Raj Kapoor directed by Shambhu Mitra and Amit Moitra. It was a diffrent type of film where Raj Kapoor, the hero hardly speeks any dialogue except at the end where he sums up the film. It was made in two versions, Hindi and Bengali ( EK DIN RATRE). I saw both the films simalteneously on two CD players. It was a wonderful experience. Most of the actors were same and most of the footage was same. In Bengali version Motilal’s role was played by Chabi Biswas. The film was shot in Calcutta. And in this song, Motilal mistakes a drum as a beautiful girl. Inside the drum was hiding Raj Kapoor and thus Motilal unknowingly brings Raj Kapoor inside his house.
