Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon

Posted on: October 10, 2012

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Whenever I come across the name of the film “Baat ek raat ki” the song ‘na tum hame jaano, na ham tumhen jaane’ is the song I remember. The Hemant Kumar version is posted in the blog. I have seen this song many times on ‘Chhaaya geet’.

Ist October happens to be the birth anniversary of both S. D. Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri, or I thought so as per the information in the page of anniversaries. Now it turns out that 1st October is Majrooh Sultanpuri’s birthdate and S. D. Burman’s birth anniversary is on 10th October. I had selected this particular Rafi-Asha duet as a tribute to both Majrooh and S. D. Burman. This is a hit combination and among the finest of Hindi film music, as far as I am concerned. It is in fact a super hit combination, if one recalls the names of movies where this combination worked together. The names include musical blockbusters viz. “Solva Saal”, “Abhimaan”, “Baat ek raat ki” , “Nau do gyarah” , “Kaala paani’, “Bambai ka Babu”, “Manzil”, “Teen Deviyaan”,”Talaash”, “Jewel Thief” etc. And I did not mention “Sujata” in the list. I have grown up listening to these songs on radio, without knowing the MD’s or lyricists’ name but the tunes and words are part of memories. Just hearing a word or two or a hint of music somewhere is enough to spark a memory of some song or the other.

So here is a song from “Baat ek Raat ki”(1962), written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by S. D. Burman. It is a happy-romantic duet sung by Mohammed Rafi and Aasha Bhosle. Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman are singing this duet in the rain. This light hearted banter is typical of S. D. Burmna duets from films like “Tere Ghar ke Saamne” , Tere mere sapne” and list can go on and on.

I heard this song for the first time recently and this sure is a hidden gem. I wonder how some songs are never played on radio or on T V programmes. This is also one such song, no less beautiful than the other songs from this film, which are very well known. I have not seen the movie, so I do not know the situation. I have selected this song as a tribute to both S D Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Lyrics

ha ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha ha ha ha
jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon
hmm
jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman
suno na
main bhi kuchh pyaar ke
haalat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman
jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman

yeh bataa
teri palkon mein
chhipaa chhipaa kaun hai
ho oo
dilrubaa
in aankhon mien
tere siwaa kaun hai
ho oo oo
yeh bataa
ho teri palkon mein
chhipaa chhipaa kaun hai
ho oo
dilrubaa
in aankhon mein
tere siwaa kaun hai
yeh adaa yeh masti
isse kyaa kehte hain jee
yeh na poochho
yeh muhobbat ka hai deewaanapan
jo ijaazat ho
jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman

dil gayaa
teri chaahat mein sanam
meraa dil gayaa
ho oo oo
mil gayaa
piyaa mujh ko to
saara jahaan mil gayaa
o o o o o o
dil gayaa
teri chaahat mein sanam
meraa dil gayaa
ho oo oo
mil gayaa
piyaa mujh ko to
saara jahaan mil gayaa
to nazar kyun hai jhuki
isse kya kehte hain jee
yeh na poochho
yeh muhobbat ka hai deewaanapan
main bhi kuchh pyaar
main bhi kuchh pyaar ke haalat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman

zindagi
afsaana hai kisi jawaan raat ka
oh ho ho oo
raat kya
ek saayaa hai tere mere saath ka
oh ho oh ho
zindagi
afsaana hai kisi jawaan raat ka
oh ho ho oo
raat kya
ek saayaa hai tere mere saath ka
meri lut kyun bikhri
isse kya kehte hain jee
yeh na poochho
yeh muhobbat ka hai deewaanapan
jo ijaazat ho
jo ijaazat ho to ek baat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman
main bhi kuchh pyaar ke haalaat kahoon
suno suno jaaneman
kaho kaho jaaneman
