Jai jai hey jagdambe maata

Posted on: October 17, 2012

The nine day festival of Navratri began yesterday (16 october) and it will run till 24 october. This festival is celebrated in different parts of the country in different ways. The eastern part of the country celebrates it as Durga Puja while it is called Navratri in the western parts of the country. I have noticed that the celebrations at various places in the country are taking leaves out of the celebration books of other regions. For example, I find it interesting that Garba, Dandia etc, which are mainly Gujarati forms of celebration are being celebrated in other parts of the country too. And the organisers their attract visitors by roping in small time TV and movie actors who supposedly teach them these dance forms.

Hindi movies can be relied upon to have songs for every occasion and the festival of Navratri is no exception. Here is one of the earliest such song. This song is a movie song but it has become so popular than many people may actually belive it to be a non movie devotional song.

This song is from “Ganga Ki Lehren” (1964). This movie has been forgotten by now but it has some wonderful songs in it that people enjoy listening to without being aware of their details. I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past, viz. Chhedo naa meri zulfein sab log kyaa kahenge and Machalti huyi hawaa mein chham chham .

Here is the iconic song from “Ganga Ki Lehren” (1964) which has become an indispensable devotional song for the occasion of navratri. This song has two version, or may be three. The song is sung by Lata and chorus. Part I is picturised on Savitri and Kumkum whereas part II is picturised on Savitri with Rehman and Mridula Rani.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

I take this opportunity to wish all our readers and well wishers a very happy Navratri.

Prakashji,
After your info about Savithri, I just checked IMDb to see her movie listing. She has acted in so many movies in very short life. According to IMDb, she was born on Dec 06, 37 (35 according to wiki) and died on Dec 26, 81. What a contribution in only 44/46 years of life!
Thanks for the info.

@Khyati ji – a perfect post to start the Navratri. I remember this song was played on loud speakers during the ‘durga pooja’ festivals in those years. a beautiful bhajan and lata’s voice make it more divine. Happy Navratri to all of you.
@Atul ji – thanks and happy Navratri to all of you !!!
