“Teen Deviyaan”(1965) was a Nalanda Production movie. It was produced and directed by Amarjeet. The movie had Dev Anand, Kalpana Mohan, Simi Garewal, Nanda, Harindarnath Chattopadhyaya, Ruby Myers(aka Senior Sulochana), I.S.Johar, Rashid Khan, Janki Dass, Dhanna, Ravikant, Rirkoo, Latif, Wajid Khan, Funny Tincher, Amin Sayani, Ratan Gaurang etc in it.
As many as five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Today (17 october) is the birthday of Simi Garewal, one of the three “Deviyaan” of this movie. Simi Garewal had a chequered career in Hindi movies and very few songs were picturised on her during her Hindi movie. This movie was one of those few movies where Simi Garewal got the opportunity to lip sync a song.
On the occasion of Simi Garewal’s birthday, here is a song from “Teen Deviyaan” (1965). It is a duet which is sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar. It is picturised on Simi Garewal and Dev Anand.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

i am seeing this movie for the first time consciously. meaning i may have seen this as a child when it was shown on Doordarshan. but i doubt if DD had ever telecast it as they were very strict about telecasting adult movies. bu as Maniji has said above :- ‘By today’s standards, it’s pretty tame stuff!’
i have come to the point where this song is playing and i have a feeling that the tune is same as “so jaa nindiya ki bela hai, Aa jaa panchchi akela hai”

This type of songs in which the tune of an already popular song is rehashed to create a new song interests me. In this song, only the tune of the antara of the song ‘aa jaa panchhi akela hai’ is used with some improvisation, again in antara parts only.
‘Teen Deviyaan’ (1965) had an unique distinction. The film was ‘ghost’ produced by Navketan and was ‘ghost’ directed by Dev Anand though officially it was produced and directed by Amarjeet, a Publicist with Navketan for a long time.
Another distinction for the film was that though officially, S D Burman was the music director, in reality, RD Burman was ‘de facto’ music director for most of the songs as his father was ill at the time of making the film.
So, for this song, R D Burman got inspired from the tune of his father’s song. Any why not? Both the songs have, more or less, the same situations in the respective films.

saw the movie over three days.
must say that either the version on YouTube is an edited version or the movie maker didn’t know how to finish what he had started. in the last 5-10 minutes we have the hero go to a hypnotist, who helps him flash forward into what would his future be with the 3 heroines. suddenly for 5 minutes the movie goes colour then reverts to being black and white. and suddenly the movie is over.
only those who were present at the time of the movie’s release will be able to tell us what was the fate of the movie at the box office.

As far as I remember, the film was a box office failure despite excellent music. In a way, it was a failure of Dev Anand in his ‘maiden’ attempt in film direction. The result was that it took him another 5 years to officially direct his first film ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970).

tune of ” Aa jaa panchchi akela hai” is present in the anatara. and before the song Simi has a dialogue that ends with “dil abhi bhara nahin” was “Hum Dono” before this?

‘Hum Dono’ was in 1961, so definitely before Teen Deviyaan. This movie was not shown on DD, Mumbai at least. I had heard the songs on Radio, but never seen them before I found them on youtube. Not part of Chhaaya geet either.
Even the most popular “Khwaab ho tum ya” was only vaguely familiar to me. And I had never seen the song ‘Likha hai teri aankhon mein ” until recently.

‘Teen Deviyaan’, believe it or not, was given an ‘A’ certificate when it was released in 1965! By today’s standards, it’s pretty stuff! How times have changed. My two friends and I, school ‘bachhas’ at that time had somehow sneaked in into ‘Navrang’ a theatre situated in Andheri, a suburb in Bombay. Dev loves three young women; Nanada, decent and innocent, Kalpana, a movie actress and Simi, a rich socialite. In the end, predictably, he settles for Nanda. No surprises there! WE had frankly gone to enjoy the songs! And we had not been disappointed at all! My favourite songs, even today, are the breezy Kishore-Lata duet, “Likha hai tere ankhome, kiska afsana…” and the soulful Rafi’s “Kahin bekhayal hokar….”
