Posted on: October 17, 2012

“Bhumika”(1977) was a Blaze Film Enterprises Production. It was produced by Lalit M Bijlani and Freni Variava and directed by Shyam Benegal. The movie was based on “Sangte Aikaa”, a Marathi language book of memoirs written by Hansa Wadkar who led a flamboyant and unconventional life in the era as early as 1940s and who at that time focussed on an individual’s search for identity and self-fulfillment. The movie had Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Anant Naag, Amol Palekar, Amarish Puri, Kiran Vairale, Sulbha Deshpande, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Baby Ruksana, B.V.Karanth, Dina Pathak, Kusuma Deshpande, Rekha Sabnis, Baby Bitto, Mohan Aghashe, Savita Bajaj, Sunila Pradhan, H.Lani, Master Abhitab, G.M.Durrani, Om Puri, Abishek, Mathew, Sudarshan Dhir, Benjamin Gilani, Vijay Padukone, Santosh Shah, Swadesh Pal etc in it.

Smita Patil who enacted the character portrayed in the book won her first National Film Fare award for this movie.

Amol Palekar, Amrish Puri Naseeruddin Shah and Anant Nag play the three males in the life of Smita Patil, who plays “Ushavari” a bollywood actress in this movie. Amol Palekar is the one who introduces her to film world. Anant Nag plays a Heart throb who is in love with her. Naseeruddun Shah is another love interest in her life where as Amrish Puri keeps her as a pampered mistress in his palatial estate.

Today (17 october) is the birth anniversary of Smita Patil. On this occasion, here is a song from “Bhumika”. This song is sung by Preeti Sagar and it is picturised on Smita Patil and Anant Nag. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vanraj Bhatia.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me independently by two contributors, viz Prakashchandra and Peevesie’s Mom.

Song-Tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein (Bhumika)(1977) Singer-Preeti Sagar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Vanraj Bhatia

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s Mom)

Tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein

yeh tumne kaisa dikhaaya sapna
main peechhe sab chhod aayi apna
peechhe sab chhod aayi apna
khadi hoon rangon ki ek nagar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein

chubhan si hai dil mein pyaari pyaari
hai meethi meethi si bekaraari
meethi meethi si bekaraari
jalan suhaani si hai jigar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein

tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
jee na lage ghar mein
jee na lage ghar mein

I’ve always been a big fan of Shyam Benegal from the time I saw ‘Ankur’. His eye for detail was incredible! He could magically recreate a period back in time with such mastery! A case in point is ‘Bhumika’. Check out the costumes, the vehicles etc. Perfect 1940s!
Vanraj Bhatia too created music according to the location of the story. If it was breezy Gujarati/Surashtra tunes in ‘Manthan’, it was distinctly Maharashtrian in ‘Bhumika’! Alas,he,like Madan Mohan and Chitragupt, were under used and never got what he duly deservred!
