on:“Bhumika”(1977) was a Blaze Film Enterprises Production. It was produced by Lalit M Bijlani and Freni Variava and directed by Shyam Benegal. The movie was based on “Sangte Aikaa”, a Marathi language book of memoirs written by Hansa Wadkar who led a flamboyant and unconventional life in the era as early as 1940s and who at that time focussed on an individual’s search for identity and self-fulfillment. The movie had Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Anant Naag, Amol Palekar, Amarish Puri, Kiran Vairale, Sulbha Deshpande, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Baby Ruksana, B.V.Karanth, Dina Pathak, Kusuma Deshpande, Rekha Sabnis, Baby Bitto, Mohan Aghashe, Savita Bajaj, Sunila Pradhan, H.Lani, Master Abhitab, G.M.Durrani, Om Puri, Abishek, Mathew, Sudarshan Dhir, Benjamin Gilani, Vijay Padukone, Santosh Shah, Swadesh Pal etc in it.

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s Mom)
Tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
yeh tumne kaisa dikhaaya sapna
main peechhe sab chhod aayi apna
peechhe sab chhod aayi apna
khadi hoon rangon ki ek nagar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
chubhan si hai dil mein pyaari pyaari
hai meethi meethi si bekaraari
meethi meethi si bekaraari
jalan suhaani si hai jigar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
badal gayi main toh ek nazar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
balamji tumse milaa ke ankhiynan
tumhaare bina jee na lage ghar mein
jee na lage ghar mein
jee na lage ghar mein

Aur Prakashchandra-ji, kya apko pata hai, Vanraj Bhatia 1980s me Garden Sarees ke vigyapanon ke liya itna madhur sangeet banaya tha? Aur woh bhi, sarangi upyog karke!!

I’ve always been a big fan of Shyam Benegal from the time I saw ‘Ankur’. His eye for detail was incredible! He could magically recreate a period back in time with such mastery! A case in point is ‘Bhumika’. Check out the costumes, the vehicles etc. Perfect 1940s!
Vanraj Bhatia too created music according to the location of the story. If it was breezy Gujarati/Surashtra tunes in ‘Manthan’, it was distinctly Maharashtrian in ‘Bhumika’! Alas,he,like Madan Mohan and Chitragupt, were under used and never got what he duly deservred!
