‘Aatank’ (1996) was produced and directed by Prem Lalwani. The cast included Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Vinod Mehra, Nafisa Ali, Girish Karnad, Disco Shanti, Padma Khanna, Ravi Kishan, Amjad Khan, Ranjeet, Kadar Khan etc. The story of the film seems to have been inspired from ‘Jaw’ (1975), the highest grossing Hollywood film of that time.
The film had a long history of making. After ‘Imaan Dharam’ (1977), Desh Mukherjee had launched this film but was inordinately delayed due to financial constraint and the logistc problems leading to the film being shelved. The shelved film was sold to Prem Lalwani in an auction in early 1990s. He decided to revive the film by which time some of the actors in the film like Vinod Mehra, Amjad Khan, Keshto Mukherjee passed away. Somehow Prem Lalwani completed the films by rewriting some parts of the screenplay. The body doubles for the actors who passed away were used for their remaining scenes and their voices were dubbed by dubbing artists. The new characters for actors like Ranjeet and Ravi Kishan were added. As a result, the completed film has become a hotch-potch giving an impression that the different scenes which were completed before the film was shelved patched up without much continuity. I also got the impression that a new character of a CBI Officer in disguise was added with Ravi Kishan. The character of Ranjeet was added as a henchman of Amjad Khan who in reality ‘substituted’ his role. The film was certified by the Censor Board on November 09, 1995, and the film was released on February 09, 1996. The songs were released on CD in September 1996 after the film was released.
The story of the film is as under:
Jesu and Peter are minor boys who are close friends in a coastal fishing village. One day, they decide to take a boat for rowing in the seas without the knowledge of its owner, Simon (Sajjan). While they are on their return journey to the shore, the boat gets hit on the rock when Peter was pushing the boat resulting in some minor damages to the boat. Simon reports to the local priest (Dr Shriram Lagoo). Peter is now afraid as his mother will be asked to pay the damages. Jesu takes the blame on himself and reports as such to the Priest who is his guardian. The Priest is annoyed with Jesu and expels him from his shelter.
Many years have passed. Jesu (Dharmendra) has grown up as a ‘He Man’ and the villagers regard him as a local hero. He is also a fisherman. Peter (Vinod Mehra) has also taken up the family’s profession as a fisherman. The friendship of Jesu and Peter is intact. Alphonso (Amjad Khan), a gangster, virtually rules the fishing village. He is an extortionist who forcibly takes a sizable proportion of fishermen’s catch on a daily basis through his henchmen like Simon (Sajjan). So, there is some clash or the others between Alphonso’s henchmen and Jesu when he gets complaints from the fishermen about the extortions. Alphonso does not take this development lightly. He orders his henchmen not to allow any fishing boats in the sea for fish catching. Another henchman (Ranjit) sets the houses of the fishermen on fire who have defied Alphonso.
One day while fishing, Phillips (Keshto Mukherjee) accidentally gets some black pearls which he shows to Alphonso. Realising that they are the precious pearls, Alphonso goes along with Phillips in search of black pearls which Phillips is able to retrieve some more from the sea bed. He gets Alphonso killed so that the secret of black pearls remains with him and he harvests them to smuggle in the international market. For this purpose, Alphonso gets a partner, D’Costa (Kader Khan) from the international market. The continuous dredging in the sea bed for black pearls disturbs the ocean’s ecosystem including its marine life. Fishermen observe the sighting of shark fish which is supposed to be in the mid sea region.
After few days, a fisherman finds a dead body in his fishing net which is identified as that of Phillips. The villagers assume that Phillips, who was a drunkard, must have slipped from the hills and fallen in the sea. His wife (Padma Khanna) has taken up the profession as a dancer in the village to entertain Alphonso’s guests to sustain herself.
Jesu’s friend, Peter has fallen in love with Suzy D’Silva (Nafisa Ali) and his marriage ceremony has been planned in the Church. Jesu is the best man for Peter and the Priest solemnised the marriage. After the marriage, Peter and Suzy spend time on the beach at night for a swim where Suzy disappears. Peter lodges a missing complaint with the local police station headed by Inspector Khan (Girish Karnad) who assumes that she may have drowned in the sea for which Peter reveals that Suzy had participated in the international swimming competition.
Since the police investigation takes its own time, Peter and Jesu decide to search for Suzy in a motor boat. Suddenly, a giant shark appears near the boat unbalancing Peter who falls in the sea. Jesu tries to rescue Peter but the giant shark has swallowed Peter. Jesu returns and tells Inspector Khan about the incident which prompts him to impose a ban on fishing and boating in sea to prevent fishmen falling in the trap of man-eating shark. The message is passed on to Alphonso to ensure that fishermen do not venture into the sea. Alphonso sees this as a god-send opportunity to harvest black pearls without the notice of the fishermen.
Alphonso continues harvesting the black pearls with a professional diver in a motor boat accompanied by his partner D’Costa. However, the diver returns to the boat hurriedly as he was about to fall prey to the man-eater shark. The leak of this news will further create problems for their pearl harvesting. So, Alphonso and D’Costa kill the diver and throw his dead body in the sea.
In the meanwhile, with the slow progress of the police investigation, Jesu decides to search for the man-eater shark himself with some long sharp-edged spears. Inspector Khan tries to convince him not to venture in the see with the intention of killing the man-eater shark as it is full of risk. But Jesu is adamant. Inspector Khan decides to accompany him in a motor boat. They encounter the man-eater shark which tries to topple their boat unbalancing them. After many attempts, Jesu hits with his spear the jaw of the shark multiple times. The man-eating shark is dead.
Simultaneously, Mahesh Kumar, who now turns out to be the CBI officer in disguise who has been assigned to secretly investigate the smuggling of black pearls. He is successful in identifying the gang with its international network. He calls for a big contingent of armed police to confront Alphonso’s gang, led by Ranjeet. In the fight, Ranjeet is shot dead by Mahesh Kumar. Alphonso (this time Amjad Khan’s body double) who is planning to escape to some foreign country is in his motor boat awaiting the helicopter arranged by D’Costa to pick him. However, Jesu hits the helicopter with his spears when it has descended in a low height to pick Alphonsp. The helicopter explodes on Alphonso’s boat. They both die. Jesu with the help of the villagers brings the dead man-eater shark to the shore to give confidence to the fishermen of the village that they can now safely go for fishing in the sea.
As mentioned earlier, the film is majorly a patch-up work of many scenes filmed before it was shelved. As a result, none of the main actors has long roles. Hema Malini, the lead actor with Dharmendra appears in the film during the last 40 minutes of the film. The second lead pair – Vinod Mehra and Nafisa Ali has limited presence in the film with their scenes begining with the marriage ceremony followed by a song as both are separately swallowed by man-eater sharks. Another unusual feature of the film is that Dharmendra, the protagonist and Amjad Khan, the antagonist are never seen together in the film even though in the story, they are in the same fishing village.
The film had five songs written by Dev Kohli, Rani Malik and Majrooh Sultanpuri. However, their accreditation to each song is unknown. The songs were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘main door chalee haan jaaungee’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Nafisa Ali.
The context of the song is that Peter (Vinod Mehra) and Suzy (Nafisa Ali) get married in a church in which Peter’s childhood friend, Jesu (Dhrmendra) is the best man for Peter. After the marriage ceremony, wine is served to the guests. Many of the guests force Peter to take a sip from their glasses making him intoxicated. So, after the marriage ceremny is over, Suzy takes Peter to the beachside during which she teases him that she would move far away from him so much he would not be able to catch her. Towards the end of the song, Suzy goes for a swim in the sea when she is swallowed by a killer shark.
