This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Guru Dutt and Dev Anand were good friends. Guru Dutt was senior to Dev Anand, having started in 1941 with Uday Shankar’s Cultural centre-Almoda to study Dance and drama. In 1944 Guru Dutt joined Prabhat Film company at Poona, where he met his two future friends- Rehman and Dev Anand. In 1946, he worked there as an assistant Director to P.L.Santoshi for “Hum Ek Hai” and also choreographed its dances. It was here that he developed a bond with Dev.

It so happened that Dev and Guru Dutt both shared the same laundryman. One day, Dev found that one of his shirts was replaced with another shirt. When he went for shooting,he found Guru Dutt wearing his shirt. On asking Guru Dutt agreed that it was not his shirt, but as he had no other shirt, he used the replacement. From then on they became very good friends. It was decided that whenever one of them starts/produces a film, he should give a chance to the other.

Thus when Navketan’s first film AFSAR-1950 failed miserably, for the second film BAAZI, Dev Anand invited Guru Dutt as a Director for his second movie, viz Baazi.Raj Khosla was Guru Dutt’s assistant.

Dev and Guru Dutt worked together for Baazi and Jaal. A serious dispute between Chetan Anand and Guru Dutt prevented further collaboration. Incidentally, Dev Anand always regretted that Guru Dutt did not keep his promise of making him a Hero in a film produced and directed by him. Dev did act in C.I.D.-1956, but it was directed by Raj khosla, though produced by Guru Dutt.

BAAZI-1951 was a crime thriller by Navketan. The story, dialogues and screenplay was done by Balraj Sahni. 1951 was an eventful year for Balraj. He had become friendly with Zia Sarhadi who was working on Hum Log. He gave the Hero’s role to Balraj. While the film shooting was going on, Balraj Sahani was arrested and jailed for his communist activities. He used to come for shooting of Hum Log handcuffed and with Police escort. It was at that time that he learnt that Guru Dutt was making many changes in the script of Baazi-which Balraj had written-without consulting him. There was a hot argument between the two and they decided never to work together again !

The lyrics of Baazi were by Sahir Ludhiyanavi and the music by S.D,Burman, who was a fixture with Navketan till the end. When Sachinda was very ill then with his permission, R.D.Burman was brought in by Dev Anand.

The cast of BAAZI was Dev Anand, Geeta Bali,Kalpana Kartik, K.N.Singh, Krishna Dhavan, Rashid Khan, Roopa Verman, Johnny Walker(credited as Badruddin Kazi, He became Johny Walker afterwards).

While doing Baazi, Dev Anand had to do a scene as a Taxi Driver. Seeing him in that getup, Chetan Anand wrote the story of Taxi Driver with Dev as a Hero. His get up was so good that one day, while on outdoor shooting near Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay, one Foreign Tourist hailed Dev Anand and asked him to drive to marine Lines. Dev Anand too promptly complied ! Little did the foreigner know who the driver was !!

While shooting for BAAZI,Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik (Real name Mona Sinha, from Punjab and a cousin of Uma, Chetan Anand’s wife)developed love for each other finally culminating in a secret marriage during Taxi Driver shooting. While shooting both asked for a break from Chetan Anand, went to the adjoining apartments, where the Marriage Registrar and few close friends were present and the civil marriage took place. After marriage they both coolly came back and continued shooting. Even Chetan Anand did not know this. The news of marriage was made public by the duo after a few months.

coming back to story of BAAZI-

The once well to do Madan (Dev Anand)has fallen on bad days and stays with his sick sister Manju(Roopa Verman). Unable to get a job,he starts gambling and in a short time becomes famous as a lucky gambler. Pedro(Rashid Khan) takes him to the mysterious ” Maalik” in Star Hotel, who makes an offer to Madan, asking him to join him and play in his hotel, tempting rich customers. Madan refuses.

Madan gets introduced to Dr. Rajani(Kalpana Kartik) who runs a free clinic. She treats his sister and the sister is sent to a sanitorium. These two fall in love, but Rajni’s father(K.N.Singh) is against this. Dejected, Madan joins the Star Hotel as a gambler, where he meets Leena(Geeta Bali). She has a soft corner for him. They come closer but there is a murder attempt on Madan. Leena comes to protect him and dies. However Madan is accused of killing Leena as his fingerprints are found on the weapon.

Inspector Ramesh(Krishna Dhawan) who is the designated and selected son in law by K.N.Singh, arrests him and Madan is jailed. Madan learns that the mysterious “Maalik” is K.N.Singh and that he is the murdere but K.N.Singh meets him and threatens to kill his sister if Madan opens his mouth. Meanwhile Inspector Ramesh finds some proof and realises that Madan is innocent and the culprit is K.N.Singh. Madan is sentenced to hang at 6 am. Inspector Ramesh sets up a trap for K.N.Singh. Next day thinking that Madan must have been hanged, he brags how he has framed Madan. All this is taped and he is arrested. Madan is set free. The lovers finally unite.

let us now see and hear my favourite song from this film, which is also the final song from this movie to be posted on the Blog.

I am privileged to share the page with you. Thanks Atulji for bringing this about.
Before thinking of marraige to Kalpana, as everyone knows he was set upon marrying Suraiya. A day before the marriage he took her to check with Astologer Shri Bhoja(Bhojani) who had set up his shop in CP Tank, Mumbai. After studying the horoscope to the utter chagrin of the duo he declared that they will not be able to marry. Horoscope turn to hororscope. And as they say the rest is history. This was told to my father by Shri Bhoja as we also referred to same Bhoja for our needs.
