Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Falak se utrey zameen pe taare

Posted on: November 13, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Seven thousand. And the mind says, Goodness, are we already there?

A fabulous pace and a fantastic record. The steady pace with which the team is pulling together is simply marvelous. And more than that, it is Atul ji’s single minded devotion to this endeavor. One can barely begin to imagine the amount of time and effort that he is relentlessly putting in, day in and day out. That is nothing less than fantastic.

The choices of what all we celebrate today are many. Let me start with wishing all friends and readers of this blog, a very Happy Diwali.

Share a smile and spread the cheer
The season of bright shining lights is here

May this occasion of festivity and the celebration of light
Herald in good times of happiness and peace

May this joyous day bring
Auspicious tidings of good health and prosperity
To your home and your dear ones

May the bright illumination of the lamps from tonight
Sparkle in your home throughout the next year,
Brightening all the days and nights of the coming year

And the glow and warmth of the lamps
May last through the year
Till the day when this greeting
Will be said once again
🙂

As I checked the history of posts, I found that the 5000th song, the fabulous qawwaali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne” was posted exactly one year ago, on 13th November, 2011. And after one full year, we have added 2000 more gems of all flavours and varieties to this magic bag of musical joy. Maintaining a very steady pace of 5 to 6 songs posted per day, and an average of one thousand songs per half year – the inexorable consistency of progress is simply mind boggling.

Magic Bag of Musical Joy. Oh yes, this blog, this collection of songs, is no less than a Bag of Magic. One simply has to delve in, and with eyes closed, pull out one, or a handful. And it is not a wonder that one will pull out a favorite song, that brings comfort and joy. Wonderful Bag of Magic, full of melodies, emotions, celebrations – the life represented in all its colors, all its sentiments. The poet has averred “Zindagi Ke Rang Kai Re, Saathi Re . . .” – “O friends, this life, it comes in innumerable color, innumerable hades. . .”. Ah, so true. On this blog, we are already familiar with seven thousand colors of life, and every day we are adding more colors to it.

Be that this blog is a Wonderful Bag of Magic. And that makes Atul ji, the Magician. Just close your eyes and imagine – Atulji, wearing a flowing robe with sparkling stars stitched on it, wearing a magicians hat, with a wand in hand. And every time he waves his wand (or clicks the mouse 🙂 ), this Wonderful Bag of Magic is richer with a few more flavors of life. Bringing joy to the lovers of music in all parts of the world.

And that is the other absolutely fantastic milestone that we must talk about. When the 6000th song was posted on 23rd May earlier this year, just five months and 20 days ago, the visitor’s counter on this blog stood at approximately 3 million 90 thousand. And the count today – it is a whopping 3 million 900 thousand plus, ready to breach the 4 million mark in a matter of days. That amounts to almost a million hits across a duration of six months, and across a span of one thousand new songs. Simple arithmetic shows that this averages to approximately 5,500 visitors per day. Wow and wow. By this standard, our blog must be one of the top destinations on the internet, outside of the social networking and news channel sites. ‘Fantastic’ seems to be a mild word for this achievement. So let it be known – it’s the power of music, music of the old Hindi films. Yahooo. . .

And now coming to yet one more grand milestone that this post represents. With this song, the blog now has 1700 flavors of that inimitable voice – Mohammed Rafi. The one voice that makes us laugh, the voice that haunts, the voice that is a spring well of joy and love, the voice that makes us pensive, makes us cry, the voice that leads the way through life, allowing us to see it in all its different colors. The voice that has the unmatched quality to effortlessly blend – to blend into every personality, to blend into every situation and story line, to blend into every melody it was chosen to render.

The song being posted, is a non film offering. A song that is a lost and a rare song – a soft and joyful celebration of the festival of lights. It has been sitting in my collection for some time now, a gift from my collector friend, who once gave me a set of very rare non film recordings of Rafi Saab. And I found this selection to be an absolute delight. Many of these songs I was hearing for the first time. Including this Diwali song, whose existence I came to know about then, for the first time. I have tried to look for references to this song, but have as yet been unable to find out more information about it. And that is how I present this song today, sans any information about the lyricist or the composer of this delightful song. Maybe some other friend on the blog is familiar with this song. I request our more knowledgeable friends to please add more information about this song.

Listen and enjoy this wonderful Diwali song, rendered by Rafi Saab.

falak se utrey zameen pe taare
chiraagh ban ban ke jhilmilaaye
kahaan se aayi hai ye diwaali
khushi ke naghme dilon ne gaaye

The stars from the sky
Have descended upon this earth
As flickering, sparkling lamps tonight
Ah, the celebration of Diwali is here
And every heart sings
A song of joy

haseen raaten bahut si dekhi
magar na dekhi hai aaj jaisi
singaar solah kiye diwali
thhumakti doley, sabhi ko bhaaye

These eyes have seen
Many a wondrous nights before
But none compare to the wonders of this night
Embellished with all the sixteen forms of adornment
This night prances about with joy
Bringing pleasure to every heart

bahaar aankhen bichhaaye baitthi
har ek kooche gali mein apni
ajab nazaare ajeeb rangat
nazar jo uljhe sulajh na paaye

Embracing all the joyful colors of spring
It plays around, waiting
In every alley, at every crossroad
Wondrous scenarios
Resplendent colors
So enchanting
That the eyes are just spellbound
Captivated by the scenarios

jalaa ke khud ko chiraagh boley
hamaari raunaq tumhe mubaarak
jalan mein kitna mazaa madhukar
ye jalne waala hi jaan paaye

The burning lamps so announce
May our splendor
Be endowed upon you (this world)
Ah, what ecstasy this burning is
For sharing this illumination
Only we, who burn
Know this joy

Sudhirji,
What a perfect song to celebrate two milestones of the blog on the festival of Diwali. Like you have said, “Zindagi ke rang kahin re…..” , ek Aadmi ko Insaan banane ke liye jivan mein sabhi Rang ki zarurat padti hai. Thanks for Rafi saab’s NFS song, which I never heard b4.

Sudhirji,
I would like to measure the length of your hand from shoulder to the finger. It must be the longest as then only you can manage to ferret out this gem from the depths of the samandar of nuggets. How come I did not hear this one. Great show.

A very belated Happy Diwali from me too to all “Atulites” here. I had limited connectivity the last week.

Fantastic achievement, Atul. 7000 songs! Cannot agree more with Sudhirji when he says it is all because of your single-minded dedication to the blog. Speaking for myself, I know I’m not as regular here as I was not so long ago, but it doesn’t mean I am any less involved/interested in the progress of this blog. Most certainly not!

What a lovely Diwali song! Never heard it before – real treat! And that too Rafi saab’s 1700th on this blog. Everything gelling together just perfectly.

May this blog continue to clock more and more milestones – ye karvaan chalta rahe.

The lyricist could be ‘Madhukar Rajasthani’ as the word madhukar appears in the last stanza.
