Din albele pyaar ka mausam

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Old age too has some advantages. You have seen or done something long long ago, which is a part of History or a matter of wonder and awe for the younger generation. The cicumstances and social set up has undergone a sea change in the last 50-60 years. As such this period is equal to 2-3 generations(30 years=1 generation) and no wonder if things are topsy-turvy and 180 degrees changes have taken place.

Thus, you enjoy narrating your experiences when the audience is willing and receptive(or simply captive). This is a mutually beneficial arrangement when the topic is of common interest to both parties, take old films and music, for example.

I had a liking for seeing films right from the young age. Initially, this was with mother, some aunty or a female relative and usually those films would be religious or a tear-jerker. Later, however, I was to see films of my choice. Somehow I had an attraction for older films that what was available at my times. For this sometimes I had to go to the other end of the city or visit a dilapidated theatre.

Nevertheless I enjoyed them, even in their second or third run and as a hobby I started writing down about the films I saw, like the cast, songs, plot etc. For this I had to buy film booklets or song books on the footpaths outside the theatres. Several notebooks, exercise books and diaries were filled, much to the chagrin of my family members who called them ‘Trash’.

This went on for few years till I grew up and engaged in career building, chase for promotions, project completions and transfers from time to time. In my first 20 years,I was ,as a company policy, transferred ten times, some of them due to promotions also. One fallout of a transfer was offloading unwanted things in the old places. Though I kept an eye on my notebooks and diaries, by the time I retired, all film booklets and half of notebooks were lost to the eternity. I still have material which would suffice for some time unless they too are desroyed by ants and antiquities.

Recently, when there was a discussion on the banning of BEGUNAH, I remembered that I had seen the film and noted also. I searched for these and got them. Being a fan of Kishore Kumar, I saw the film in the first week itself and then it disappeared.

BEGUNAH-57 was produced by Roop Kamal Chitra, Bombay. The producers were Mahipat Rai and Anupchand Shah. They were brothers from Saurashtra, basically Landlords, they had already produced

1.Shri Vishnu Bhagwan-51

2.Adhikar-54 and

3.Riyasat-55.

They had worked with well known actors and Directors, but in all the three films their MD was Avinash Vyas, whom they knew since his begining. When Begunah was planned they wanted Shanker Jaikishen as MD. The cast was fixed. Looking at their financial condition S-J and Kishore Kumar took advance money. Kishore Kumar used to take separate fees for Acting and Singing(on per song basis) in those days. During 54 to 64 period Kishore Kumar was Distributors’ darling and his films were lapped up by Distributors before film was completed.

The film story was written by I.S.Johar. It was based on the story of Paramount Picture’s ” Knock on wood”-1954,in which Danny Kaye and Mai Zetterling were the lead pair. The story was adapted to Indian conditions. For example,In the original, Hero is a Ventriloquist while here he was only a stage performer and singer. In the original, the Heroine is a Psychiatrist, here she was only an MD doctor.

The film released on 8-3-1957.

According to Shakila, the Heroine, in one interview,’ The film was based on ‘Knock on wood’ and it was an excellent comedy picture. Within 2-3 day after film’s release Danny Kaye had come to Bombay for some work. Someone told him about this film. He saw it and got it banned’

Actually, after seeing the film, Danny got an idea that much of the film has the same story as his film (he could not understand Hindi). He immediately contacted Paramount Picture in America. Next day two lawyers came to Bombay. With the help of local solicitors, they filed a case with the Metropolitan magistrate, Dadar, seeking a ban on the film and destroying all negatives/prints. Within 6 weeks, the verdict came(much to the ashtonishment of Indiam Film Industry and the local Lawyers) and the court gave orders to destroy the master print, original negatives and all prints already distributed within 3 months, consequent to immediate withdrawal of the film from Theatres.

After this the producer brothers lost heavily as they had to refund money to Distributors, as prints were recalled and destroyed. They did not go in for appeal as their lawyers advised them against it, as the points raised by Paramount were irrefutable. The Shah brothers closed down their Film business and entered Chemical Business-“Aminex Chemicals” near Poona.

If only the producers had acknowledged that the film was based on ‘Knock on wood’ they would have got off with only a fine.

The story does not end here.

The prints which had gone to Nizam territory(Hyderabad area) could not be destroyed even within 2 years. Paramount complained to the court and the Producers were heavily fined for contempt of court. They were served notices by the Debt Recovery tribunal No 1 for default of dues and their ‘Aminex chemicals’ factory and business was liquidated finally on 12-5-1989. Thus ended the BEGUNAH episode.

BEGUNAH-1957 was a story of a stage artist who, unknowingly, gets involved in a war of criminals and is accused of Murder.

Kishor(Kishore kumar) is a jolly stage singer and artist who does shows in different towns. Once,in Calcutta a fan called Dinu (Dev Raj) meets him and presents a pair of dolls as a gift. Actually Dinu is a criminal, under police surveillance, and has hidden two parts of a map of treasure in those two dolls. Bombay bound Kishor, changes plans and halts in Delhi, staying in Grand Hotel. Rai Bahadur a rival gang leader befriends him in the lobby and offers to take him to Bombay in his own plane. While they are talking, Dinu’s henchman Sitaram(Ramlal) enters his room and steals one part map. In the flight to Bombay, Raibahadur searches Kishore’s lugguage and takes the othe part of Map.

In Bombay, both Raibahadur and Sitaram enter Kishore’s flat to get the other Map. Raibahadur kills Sitaram, gets his map, and puts his body in a cupboard. When kishore comes home and opens the cupboard the dead body falls on him and he starts shouting in fear. Neighbours rush there. Kishore gets Raibahadur’s cigarette case there which has a map in it. When police siren is heard Kishore runs away, stays in Royal hotel and calls his girlfriend/lover Dr.Miss Bimala Chopra(Shakeela). She comes. After hearing everything they discuss and realise that the dolls are the cause of it all. Bimala disguises herself as a maid and works in Raibahadur’s house. She is caught redhanded while stealing one map. Meanwhile RaiBahadur’s assistants catch Kishore and recover the cigarette case with map.

Now Rai Bahadur has both the maps and Bimla. He decides to leave next day by his plane with Bimla. The police are on lookout of Kishore for Sitaram’s murder. Finally Kishore surrenders to Police, explains everything. Next Raibahadur is cornered. There is a very comedy type fighting and RB is arrested. Thus Kishore is proved BEGUNAH.

There were 6 songs in the film.

1.Aaj na jaane paagal manwa kaahe ko ghabraaye is already posted. This song is in the early part of the film. It is picturised with trick scenes. His legs are shown dancing separately and body is dancing elsewhere. At the end of the song they join again.

2. Ae pyaase dil bejubaan is already posted. This is a Party song. Jaikishen enters a Party in the Hotel. People recognise him and say ‘Aayiye Jaikishen saab gaana sunaaiye’. He sits on Piano and sings. Jaikishan was fond of appearing in films. He was seen in Shri 420 and also in Main sunder hoon-71.

3. Aa ja raat beeti jaaye… this is a Hotel song where Kishore joins as an African in the group dance to escape from goons.

4. Nazar kahe…A Helen dance in the Hotel

5. Babanu Babanu–a street dance by Shakeela where Kishore becomes a part of crowd to escape from followers.

6. Din Albele……This is what we are going to hear today in Audio. This song was picturised on Kishore Kumar and Shakeela, on Madh island beach. Originally Kishore Kumar was to sing this song. He asked for advance payment. Instead of agreeing to this demand, Shankar Jaikishan called in Manna Dey who sang this song despite requests from Kishore Kumar not to sing it. This caused bitterness between the two of them for some time.

Song-Din albele pyaar ka mausam (Begunaah)(1957) Singers-Manna Dey, Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Din albele
pyaar ka mausam
chanchal man mein toofaan
aise mein kar lo pyaar ho
aise mein kar lo pyaar
neel gagan ke saare baadal
kar denge badnaam
main kaise kar loon pyaar ho
main kaise kar loon pyaar

ye gagan ke taley
do sitaare hil mil chalen
do sitaare hil mil chalen
tere pyaar haan ji haan
mere dil mein hardam jale
mere dil mein hardamjale
ye jhoomti raahen jhoomti dharti
badle rang hazaar
main kaise kar loon pyaar

din albele
pyaar ka mausam
chanchal man mein toofaan
aise mein kar lo pyaar ho
aise mein kar lo pyaar
neel gagan ke saare baadal
kar denge badnaam
main kaise kar loon pyaar ho
main kaise kar loon pyaar

ye milan madbhara
ye nazaare jhilmil karen
ye nazaare jhilmil karen
mere dil mein piya
ye bahaaren rangat bharen
ye bahaaren rangat bharen
jab nain churaakar dekh len kaliyaan
dhadke jiya har baar
main kaise kar loon pyaar
neel gagan ke saare baadal
kar denge badnaam
main kaise kar loon pyaar ho
main kaise kar loon pyaar
main kaise kar loon pyaar
neel gagan ke saare baadal
kar denge badnaam
main kaise kar loon pyaar ho
main kaise kar loon pyaar

Thanks for some excellent informations.
I just want to add that producer Mahipatbhai Shah & Roopkala Pictures later made some other popular Hindi films, including ‘Shriman Satyawadi (* Raj Kapoor-Shakila) & Purnima (* Meena Kumari-Dharmendra-Anita Guha).
At present famous ‘Ackruti Builders’ is their family concern & it’s a leading construction co. in Mumbai

Nayan ji,
Thanks for additional info.
Once a person is involved in film business,he will not leave it easily.
Despite all the difficulties,Mahipatrai(alone-without Anupchand)
produced one more film-Shriman satyavadi-1960.However,though
Purnima-1965 was a Roopkala Picture film,it was not produced by Mahipatrai ji.

Nayan ji,
I wish to point out that the banner of Shriman Satyawadi and Purnima was ROOPKALA PICTURES,whereas
Begunah was of ROOPKAMAL CHITRA.
Both are different production houses.

Naresh ji,
you are right.
Mahal-69 was also a Roopkala Pictures film.
Begunah was produced under the banner of Roopkamal Chitra.
Later on,Mahipatrai ji might have floated Roopkala pictures.

The makers of Begunaah have done the gunah; but they had the gumption to use the title of Begunaah(innocenct) however if I split the word as Be Gunaah in Gujarati it will 2 gunnah ; one to plagarise and the other: still employing the title Begunaah. Bahut nainsaafi hain.
As ADji rightly pointed out: if they had acknowleged the source in the credits everybody would have enjoyed including the makers instead of getting ‘knock’ down. So much waste of talent, time and effort.

Thanks for sharing the story.
I remember watching the film in the very first week it was released. I remember Jaikishan in a white suit singing the song on piano.

Arunji, those were the festinate days of yesteryear. As I remember when I was 7 or 8 years old in 50’s my cousin used to take me to the movies, so I can buy tickets from the ladies window…which had very short or no line 🙂
Your article covered lots of fascinating ground. In short…plagiarism cost them very-heavily. After all, it’s a small world!
Few days ago I had chance to watch “Knock on wood” and I was comparing Danny Kay acting with Kishore da…Danny Kay acting had very similar goofiness and absent minded acting just like Kishoreda.
After listening this duet…the music, the lyrics and the melody lingers on for days and days in your mind.

Arun Ji thanks a lot! What a beautiful song…. Manna da & Lataji have done more than ample justice to the composition & lyrics 🙂

It is a crying shame that ‘Begunah’ had to be destroyed!

In spite of similarity of story line, they were different treatments and individual works of art. I believe perhaps the Hindi version was more entertaining and should have been preserved it for posterity.

Regardless Arun Ji, a million thanks for preserving the details and presenting them faithfully to a grateful audience.
