Raah chalti hai ke raahi chalte hain

Posted on: December 7, 2012

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Just the other day I wrote in the comments,” ALL that is produced after 1970 in Hindi Films is not bad as much as ALL that is produced before 1970 is not good”. My reference was to the overall quality of films, like story, acting, comedy or music etc.

The 70s and 80s were a bleak period for Hindi film comedy. Johnny Walker who ruled in the 50s and 60s was now tired and Mehmood was trying his hand at producing Tears and laughs in his films produced by him. The older generation of Omprakash, Agha or even I.S.Johar had lost their sheen and hold on the audience. They sure were not able to lead the comedy pack anymore.

It was now time and opportunity for for the new crop of actors and comedians to grab the centrestage.

Luckily, Government of India had established FILM AND TELEVISION INSTITUTE OF INDIA at Poona in 1960 for supplying trained personnel in the fields of Acting, Direction, Music, Comedy, Cinematography and Sound Recording as well as Editing etc. The lot from from the FTII started pouring from 1966 onwards and gained a momentum by 1970.

Atma Ram, brother of Guru Dutt and a noted producer/Director was about to launch his new film-Umang. This was based on the aspiration and attempts of the young generation to create and secure their own space,in the current social structure. I have seen this film. A lot of FTII graduates in almost all departments were involved in this film (thus helping Atmaram to produce this film in a considerable lower budget). It was a very good film and brought a fresh breeze of air in the Industry.

The story was set in a hugh housing society of Bombay,in which the youngsters of the society want to set up their social club in the premises. It showed their efforts to convince the elders of the society and attempts to raise the money. Being a story set in a Housing society, the writer had an opportunity to create several types of characters in a typical society, like good, bad and also ugly.

Many FTII trained actors acted in the film.otherwise also comedians like Asrani, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, Subhash Gghai, Ravi Baswani, Rakesh Bedi, Paintal, Farooq Sheikh etc were flooding various films allover in that period.

Amongst these there was KANWARJIT SINGH PAINTAL,born in a sikh family of Sadar Bazar,New Delhi. Paintal had learned the art of Miming from his father and was using it in school and college in dramas and stage shows. As such his face is large enough to express emotions effectively. He joined FTII and passed out in 1969. In 1970 he got Umang and then the line of films started. I would say Paintal was lucky that he was never short of films. He got well specified and long roles in Mere Apne,Jawani Diwani, Heera Panna, Manoranjan etc. His role in Bawarchi-72 fetched him his first Filmfare award as a comedian. Aaj ki Taza Khabar and Rafuchakkar with Rishi kapoor were important films for him. He kept on getting roles in films, but soon was reduced to doing useless roles involving buffoonery or as the Hero’s comic side kick.

Paintal did about 100 films and in 2003 joined his Alma mater-FTII as the Head of Acting Department and worked till 2008 there.

After 2008 also he did film roles but there was no charm now.

Paintal has done 6 serials on TV. His first serial was Laddoosing Taxiwala. He did Shikhndi’s role in MAHABHARAT.

He got another filmfare award-his second Filmfare award as a comedian for ‘Chala Murari Hero Banane’-1977, though it was an Asrani movie.

His elder brother Gufi Paintal is an Engineer but entered films in 1969, doing film roles and working as an assistant Director. His role of Shakuni Mama in MAHABHARAT was very famous.

Paintal’s son Hiten Paintal is also a comedy actor and worked in Dil Mange More and Bachna aye haseeno etc.

Let us now see and enjoy a song from film Khoon Kharaba-1980,in which Paintal has also sung few lines with Rafi ji.

Song-Raah chalti hain ke raahi chalte hain (Khoon Kharaaba)(1980) Singer-Rafi, Paintal, Lyrics-Ravindra Jain, MD-Ravindra Jain
Chorus
Paintal + Chorus

Lyrics

raah chalti hai ke raahi chalte hain
jalti hai baati
ke deep jalte hain
raah chalti hai ke raahi chalte hain
jalti hai baati
ke deep jalte hain

jo bhi theek theek bataayega
Raju chaacha usko saara shahar ghumaayega
raah chalti hai ke raahi chalte hain
jalti hai baati
ke deep jalte hain

Raju chacha bachchon ka karo khayaal
poocho na poocho na
aise mushqil sawaal
Raju chacha bachchon ka karo khayaal
poocho na poocho na
aise mushqil sawaal

achcha
to main hi bataata hoon
raahi chalte hain to raahen chaltin hain
sooni sooni raahen
aankhon ko khaltin hain
raahi chalte hain to raahen chaltin hain
sooni sooni raahen
aankhon ko khaltin hain

bade hoge to samajh mein aayega
banega jo baati
wahi deepak jalaayega
lalalalalalala
lalalalalala
lalalalala
lalalalalala

naarangi si ik cheez
magar na khaayi jaaye
us naarangi par
ham sadiyon se rehte aaye
naarangi si ik cheez
naarangi si cheez
magar na khaayi jaaye
patthar ki hai kyaa
us naarangi par
ham sadiyon se rehte aaye
tyre
padhoge bhoogol to jawaab mil jaayega
dharti
shaabaash
lalalalala
lalalalala
lalalalala
lalalalalalalala

two em two
four
three em three
six
driver kitne badlen lekin main hoon cleaner fit
hahahahaha

har din ghar se chaacha
le jaayen pahunchaayen

chhuti ke din bachchon
yaad tumhaari badi aaye
har din ghar se chaacha
le jaayen pahunchaayen

chhuti ke din bachchon
yaad tumhaari badi aaye
kisi ne aisa yaar paaya na paayega
raahi chalte hain to raahen chaltin hain
sooni sooni raahen
aankhon ko khalti hain
bade hoge to samajh mein aayega
banega jo baati
wahi deepak jalaayega
lalalalala

Lovely write up Arun Ji. As i mentioned earlier, I am loving this series on non-singers. Just a note – Paintal’s name is missed as one of the singers below the video link. Also, this song could qualify as a Q&A and RiddleSong.

Simply superb post, I don`t have any more words in my library. I feel sorry for myself for that.

Chhotaa munh badi baat hogi but I have to say this” you have to compile all these articles into a book”.
I hope iss tarhaa likhne mein koyee gustaakhi to nahin hogi. Gustaakhi Ho toh pleae maaf karo.

Just for the information Hiten Paintal is very good in his debut movie “Tere Liye”(2001) directed by Dhoom fame director Sanjay Gadvi.

Regards
Prakash
